Summary: The Western District volcano is erupting again, endangering nearby temples and sending ash sprinkling down across the Heavens. Is it natural, or another attack? Those who dare climb the volcano can find out.






Earthquake Warning

On the morning of the 14th, an earthquake rattles windows throughout the Heavens. It's not strong enough to knock down buildings -- unless they're about to fall down anyway, like some of the older abandoned temples -- but it's strong enough to knock things off shelves and startle any late sleepers out of bed.

After the earthquake, strange sights abound around the Heavens. The poetic koi are swimming in organized schools in all of the canals, heading upstream towards the east. Springs of pure water burst out in some areas, and in others, normal springs or fountains have gone temporarily dry. Blue and green lights bob and weave across the landscape.

Falling Rock

The volcano begins erupting with a roar and a bright scarlet glow on the horizon. Ash and bits of rock fall across the Western district, and may even reach into the Southwest, Northwest and southern Central districts. Volcanic glass fibers that look like golden hair collect on trees, fences and buildings.

Trails and fountains of lava are also erupting from freshly opened fissures and wending down the sides of the volcano. Gods and shinki who live in the Western District are going to need some help clearing ash and glass from their roofs, trying to re-route lava flows (the good news is, if you cool one side down enough, you can turn them! the bad news is, that takes a lot of work) or just offering them a spare room to stay until things calm down.

Swamp Gas

It's not just lava and springwater erupting from mysterious new crevasses -- and it's not just mundane volcanic gases, either. Divine volcanic vents are blowing mind-altering fumes all over the Heavens. Anywhere across the Far Shore, but especially as characters get closer to the volcano, they may experience one or more of the following effects:

• Confusion
• Intense emotions
• Anger and irritability
• Impulsive behavior, loss of emotional control
• Hallucinations
• Unusually clear insight into other people and situations
• Coughing, eye and throat irritation, difficulty breathing
• Irresistible impulses to speak in poetry

Most symptoms will clear up after a few hours in fresh air, and all of them will be gone within 48 hours of the last volcano gas exposure.

Mountain Climbing

Natural disasters don't just happen like this in the Heavens... do they? Amaterasu's white-robed shinki are convinced that something is wrong, and they're organizing into search parties to go up the mountain and seek out the cause of this eruption. New and old gods and shinki are welcome to join them, or form their own groups. All of the hazards -- tremors, lava, ash, and volcanic gas -- will get worse as characters ascend the volcano. Strange little spirit flames, in shades of red and blue, dance on the rocks, dazzling, confusing and threatening to singe interlopers.

And there's someone up here, too. A mysterious figure with glowing red eyes is keeping watch on the intruders and vanishing behind boulders whenever someone turns his way. He won't let anyone traveling with one of the white-robed shinki get too close, but solitary gods or shinki might manage to lure him into conversation, if they try....

Those climbing the volcano will have a chance to battle the mysterious figure should their characters choose to do so. If you're interested in a fight, please comment to the 'NPC FIGHT' thread below before the top-level is posted. A top-level for the fight will go up on IC Jan 16/OOC Sept 4.

"Ones who aren't part of the Heavens?" Sotero asks, blinking. "I mean, probably. But most of them get forgotten and then they die. I don't want to disappear like that."

Probably? So there isn't a group of them all working together.

"Do you have a temple?" He finally gives in and drops back down into a squat. It's been a long day, okay? He's tired. "A place out in the Near Shore, for humans to come and leave offerings, I mean."

[veiledflame]

"Course not," Sotero shoots back. "Who'd be that dumb? If I did I bet the Heavens would find me in no time."

[erogappa]

"Even if you used a different name?"

The heavens can't have spies everywhere. Can they?

"Humans believe in all kinds of ridiculous stuff. You really think the heavens would spot you for havin' a shrine or two?"

[veiledflame]

"I don't know how they're looking for other gods," Sotero snaps, scowling. "I just don't care that much about having a shrine, that's all."

[erogappa]

"Why not?" He's not being a jerk -- he really doesn't understand that mindset! "You have to have believers or you'll vanish, right? So how are you getting believers without a shrine?"

[veiledflame]

"There's a human who knows all about me. I'm not going to disappear." His frown is darkening.

"I don't have to have lots of believers, 'cause I'm not scared anything's going to happen to him."

[erogappa]

Gojyo's poker face really is terrible. "Just one human?" Like Votelli had just one human?

"I'd sure be scared if I were you. What if he gets sick?"

[veiledflame]

"Yeah, so? He's fine." Sotero glares, defensive. "Are you threatening him? You don't even know who he is."

[erogappa]

"Whoa whoa whoa," Gojyo interrupts, raising his hands (and, cautiously, standing, because otherwise he's gonna fall on his ass). "I'm not threatening anybody, kid. You said you were worried about disappearin', but you only have one single believer. That just sounds risky to me."

And it's not like it's had to set up shrines. The books were really clear about that! "I hope he lives a long life with fat grandbabies, okay? But if he doesn't, what happens to you?"

[veiledflame]

"I said he knows all about me, but I didn't say he was the only one. And I'm doing other things so I won't disappear.

"Like not letting the Heavens find out where I am," he adds, and props a hand on his hip. "Not until it's safe."

[erogappa]

Gojyo scratches his head, pretending to be confused.

"Isn't setting off a big-ass volcano in the middle of Heaven kinda letting them know where you are?"

[veiledflame]

"Sure, if I lived out here on this stupid mountain in Heaven all the time."

Sotero shrugs. "I couldn't help the volcano anyway. I'm not staying here."

[erogappa]

"You couldn't help it?" He's getting a headache -- there's just too much he doesn't understand! But before Sotero can respond, Gojyo waves his hands -- hold on, stop, change of topic.

"Can we just back up a minute here?" He can't imagine Sotero will want to stick around much longer -- the thrill of answering some idiot shinki's questions is gonna wear off soon. So what does he need to know? How these kid gods were made, why they're so loyal to just one person, how Sotero got into Heaven, maybe... Amaterasu, what's her beef with all these other gods?

That's all just one question, isn't it?

"I want to talk to the guy in charge. Votelli's Sensei, or whoever it is that's the boss out there. How can I meet him?"

[veiledflame]

"He's not my boss," Sotero snorts, crossing his arms. "And I'm not gonna tell you who is! You must think I'm pretty dumb, huh."

He steps back, glaring defensively. "I don't have to answer anything you want to know."

[erogappa]

"Nope. You don't have to tell me a thing." Gojyo tucks his hands into his pockets, trying to look as unthreatening as possible. "But I'm gettin' screwed over by Heaven too, you know."

There's nobody else at the bar anymore. He won't be putting anyone else in danger.

"Don't tell me his name if you don't want to. But next time you see the boss, any boss, do me a favor and tell him that Sha Gojyo wants a word. He can find me at Asato's. A-sa-to, out in [industrial west Tokyo neighborhood]." Hakkai will be mad, but if he doesn't take risks, he'll never get any answers. "I'm not on Amaterasu's side here, kid. The only side I'm on is my own."

Damn. That sounded bad ass. He'll have to remember that line.

Sotero stares at him in silence for a long moment.

"Okay," he says, at last. "Maybe I will."

He nods, briefly, and turns to go.

[erogappa]

Okay. Well. If it was a mistake, it's too late to change things now.

"And hey, kid!" Can you tell the volcano to stop? It's on the tip of his tongue, but at the last minute, different words emerge.

"Be careful, okay? There's a hell of a lot of Amaterasu's shinki crawling all over this mountain."

Sotero hesitates, casting Gojyo a weird look over his shoulder, but, at last, he waves.

"Yeah," he calls back. "You too!"
