What: fooling around after valentines day

[So Ren's been living here for a couple of weeks. The temple feels more like home now. It's a good thing that Ain's taking care of him. Sometimes Ren feels like doing things for Ain as well. He gets up and calls for his god.]

Hey, do you have a moment?

[Spots is loitering around the room as Ren tries to get Ain's attention.]

[ Is Ain ever not watching? It's hard to tell, especially when a shadow appears on the floor and Ain rises from it serenely as if a portal. ]

I do. Did you need something?

[ Ain's always got THE EYES...so he knows what's up most of the time. ]

I was wondering if you wanted to play a game.

[ Ren points down to a board with white and black tiles.]

Know about chess?

[abgrund]

I do.

[ Something he's mostly watched but never taken part in. ]

You want to try it?

[phantomtrick]

I'd like to. Games are fun.

[ So Ren starts setting up the board along with the pieces. ]

This isn't my first time. I know a lot of tactics and methods. Should I explain some?

[abgrund]

[ It's good that Ren has other hobbies to pass his time. Utsushi isn't a good companion for young and growing minds, so Ren taking the initiative makes that Ain doesn't have to stage any interventions. Yet. ]

Sure.

[ He technically knows the rules already but hey, why not. ]

You need to move the pieces carefully so you can achieve checkmate.

There are several ways to do it. Do whatever you want and see what works.


[ Are they ready to begin? ]

[ Since Ren knows all the rules, there's nothing stopping them from playing. ]

I see. I'm ready whenever you are.

[ He's not particularly bad at chess, but not particularly good either. Let's see how good Ren is. ]

Alright, let's go.

[ Ren nods and moves one of his pieces forward. He's not exactly an amateur and it looks like he knows what he's doing. ]

I'll start with something small and build up from there. It's your turn.

[AIN GO.]

[ Ain picks up a pawn and moves with with all the delicacy and precision of a machine. He doesn't say anything after, merely waiting to see what Ren would do. Play offense, or defense, or both? ]

[phantomtrick]

[ Ren is going on the offense. Well, that's how it seems at first. His plan is so reckless that you have to stop and think about it.

He appears to be calm but it looks like he may be rushing ahead too fast.
]

[ A moment of indecision lets him take one of Ren's pawns. Technically he could have taken a Bishop but he's choosing to go easy on Ren for the time being.

Time to see how he'll react to this. ]

[ Wow Ain. It's just a pawn but a loss is a loss.

Ren is sticking with his plan. He either makes it or he doesn't. He's always been like this.

All or nothing. So he still has a shot at victory and he isn't making any sudden changes. Suddenly his knight cuts behind Ain's defense. ]

[abgrund]

[ He lets Ren capture one of his own pieces, but in exchange his Rook is able to nab a few of Ren's own backline. His assault seems to have left his defense open... hmm hmm. ]

[phantomtrick]

What do you think the outcome's going to be?

[ Ren strokes his chin and moves a piece forward. It might be hard to win. ]

[abgrund]

Do you want to win?

[ It's a honest question. He doesn't mind throwing the match if Ren really wants to, but he has to figure out the kid's attitude first. ]

Who likes losing?

[ Ren's brow shrinks until he looks down and sighs. ]

I can't tell if you were going easy on me, toying with me, or both. A loss is a loss though. I wouldn't be much of a man if I couldn't admit that.

[abgrund]

I'm being truthful. I wouldn't toy with someone.

[ It seems... unnecessary, somehow. He doesn't need to think too much to figure out Ren's plan, but it's not easy either. ]

[phantomtrick]

You're a lot nicer than you look.

[ Ren tries to hide his smile under his hand. ]

Did someone tell you that before?

[abgrund]

[ There is no meaning in pursuing that which is futile. ]

Perhaps.

[ It doesn't matter all that much. He's sure of how he should conduct himself and other people's words won't change that in the slightest. ]

[phantomtrick]

[ Ren crouches to the floor and picks up one of the cats running around. ]

Our feline friends think you're nice too.

[ Kitty lets out a meoooww nodding in agreement. ]

[abgrund]

[ Ain watches Spots for a few moments before the corner of his visible eye crinkles a little in what might be a smile. ]

I like cats, [ he says sagely. ]

[phantomtrick]

Good to hear. I love cats too..

[ Spots runs over the table and knocks over some of the pieces. They're so excited to see Ain. ]

Give Spots a big hug.

[abgrund]

[ Hm. Not something he's used to doing, but... ]

If you insist.

[ Ain holds out his arms and waits for Spots to snuggle up to him. He'll pet the cat. ]

[phantomtrick]

[ The kitten lets out a purr and almost takes a nap. ]

They're asleep....

[ Ren puts his finger to his mouth gesturing for them to be quiet. Respect the mighty cat overlord.]

[ What a strange cat. But then again, everyone is strange, no? ]

The game isn't over yet.

[ It's easy for him to create a barrier around Spots to isolate out noise. That should do it. ]
