December Training

Who: Everyone
What: Information and Training
When: March 8, 2017
Where: Outside the Meeting Hall, the Far Shore
Summary: Training and informational sessions for newly arrived gods and shinki

Gods and shinki arriving at heaven's meeting hall are brought into small one-on-one meeting rooms as they appear, with a white-robed shinki offering them an explanation of their current role, the name of the god they will represent or the god they will serve, and directions to the temple that will be their new home.

They are cordially invited to a training session beginning in midafternoon, once they've had the chance to return to their homes, meet their new partners, and have their questions answered.

Morning/On the Road

New gods and shinki are being packed off to their new temples for the morning to settle in and meet their partners -- this is also a good time to visit with new neighbors or explore the area! What does your new temple look like? Are you headed straight there, or taking the scenic route to get a better sense of your new surroundings? The Western District is still scarred from the aftereffects of a recent volcanic eruption and earthquake, with fissures in some of the roads and burn scars in the wild landscape. The volcanic ash, though, seems to be serving as fertilizer for vast swaths of unfamiliar and colorful wildflowers, which are spreading out even further with the onset of Spring. Strangely, there are many fewer flowering trees than might be expected.

Shinki Training

A well-appointed dojo has been prepared for newcomers to practice the physical or magical arts. Outside, there are two impromptu target practice areas: one is for long-range weapons, with targets set up against hay bales at the other side of a wide, grassy area and a line drawn for the weapons' wielders to stand behind. The other is for borderlines, and a number of young children wearing short coats marked with Amaterasu's golden chrysanthemum on white are dashing around practicing their own borderlines against what look like old clothes and sheets rescued from the rag pile and hung from trees or stuffed with straw to serve as targets. Some of the children are trapping their straw-stuffed targets by dancing in circles around them, hands held as they sing the Kagome song; others are using cutting borderlines to bring sheets fluttering down.

Inside the dojo, there's room for several pairs to spar, and weapons are set up all along one wall, everything from polearms to rifles, chakrams to broadswords. They're all meant for practice, with edges dulled or padded to avoid any accidental deaths, but sparring partners will still have to be careful to avoid injury. Although there are many fewer white-robed shinki here than usual, except for the children, there is one adult shinki keeping an eye on things inside the dojo and one keeping an eye on things in the yard. They are willing to answer questions, help with borderlines or teach shinki new spells on request. Comment to the NPC REQUEST form to interact with one of them or if you have any questions about handwaving an interaction.

Physical Training

The cherry blossoms that had begun to bloom across the Meeting Hall grounds seem to have experienced a mysterious mishap. Buds and half-opened blossoms alike have rained down from the branches, carpeting the fresh spring grass below with soggy brown and black rot. Several gardener shinki, with their sleeves tied back and sensible heavy aprons to protect their white uniforms, are raking up the fallen blossoms and trying to coax the trees back to health with powders and straw wraps to protect the trees' trunks from nightly chill. They need help: climb the trees and sprinkle the knots along the branches with invigorating powders to encourage fresh buds, or help the gardeners hold the straw in place around the tree trunks while it's wrapped with cloth, or just help rake up the dead flowers.

Besides the cherry problems, the gardens are beautiful and just beginning to burst into spring bloom. Tulips, crocuses and daffodils are sprouting everywhere, and once the borderline game is done, the child shinki are quickly organizing a garden-wide game of hide-and-go-seek. Find the best hiding spot you can, and make a break for home base as soon as you're sure the seeker is too far away to catch you! But don't run into anyone on the way.

Rest and Refreshments

Gods and shinki who are finished with their training can step into a large room in the Meeting Hall that has been set up with comfortable cushions and low tables. A fresh springtime menu is available: lightly flower-scented teas, plum wine, and a variety of little savory or sweet snacks to nibble on while waiting for dinner. Dinner turns out to be okonomiyaki: bowls with mixed batter and a plate full of tasty add-ins are brought out, and griddles at the center of the table heated to let every guest set out their own favorite add-ins, pour batter over, and make a savory pancake. It's a little tricky to flip with the tiny spatulas provided, but it should only take a few pancake disasters to get the hang of it, probably!

After eating, a few doves will flutter into the room, dropping off scrolls to certain people, and the frazzled-looking adult shinki from the earlier training session dashes to the front of the room to try to keep everyone occupied. He's reading from a handful of printouts with corporate icebreaker ideas: pin a secret card to the back of everyone's shirt and ask whoever you meet for clues to figure out what it says! Fill out a bingo card with different skills or experiences your fellow gods and shinki have! Figure out how to stack every piece of furniture in the room onto just one table... play a game where you're only allowed to reply with questions... switch tables every five minutes and see how well you can get to know the other person there before your five minutes are up. Wait, isn't that speed dating? He seems to be running out of ideas.

In Summary:
  • Get all the information you can handle
  • Veteran new gods and shinki are welcome to volunteer showing the ropes
  • Practice sparring or shinki magic
  • Enjoy a buffet dinner and some icebreakers
  • Have fun~

You're defending me?

[ Elfnein doesn't know how to feel about this, Zetta normally doesn't say nice things about her. ]
badassfreakingoverlord: (good guy zetta)

[personal profile] badassfreakingoverlord 2019-01-11 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[Zetta turns back to face her.]

You know you're weak and need to get stronger, and you're making an effort to do so. As a demon, I respect that sentiment! It's much better than relying on others to get by for you, or thinking you can make everything work without strength.
alchemists: (It's no problem)

[personal profile] alchemists 2019-01-11 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really happy that you're defending me in this institution, I'm not strong like you and most other gods. I want to get stronger now, so that way Romeo won't get hurt or have to suffer because of my lack of strength.
badassfreakingoverlord: (dot dot frickin' dot)

[personal profile] badassfreakingoverlord 2019-01-11 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there's a kid who needs this lesson too. [What weird twist of fate pushed those two together?]

A-anyway, don't make such a big deal about it. You've got the proper attitude, that's all.
alchemists: (Triple check)

[personal profile] alchemists 2019-01-12 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
But it is a big deal, this is a first for you.
badassfreakingoverlord: (aghast!)

[personal profile] badassfreakingoverlord 2019-01-16 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
You're the one starting up something new and valuable! I'm just encouraging that! Don't act like it's something special!
alchemists: (Look at all these new notes)

[personal profile] alchemists 2019-01-19 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, I won't bring it up again right now then. What should I do next, this weapon might not suit me.
badassfreakingoverlord: (adrift in a sea of nothing)

[personal profile] badassfreakingoverlord 2019-01-20 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Really? Why do you say that?

[Zetta still doesn't see the problem, and given the proportion of Prinny to weapon on his side, there's good reason for that.]
alchemists: (Default)

[personal profile] alchemists 2019-01-20 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The proportion seems off, if I keep tripping because of being thrown off balance it would be pointless to have the weapon in the first place.
badassfreakingoverlord: (adrift in a sea of nothing)

[personal profile] badassfreakingoverlord 2019-01-21 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
That might just be because you're... you know, in physically terrible shape.

But I guess you could go down to a smaller weapon.
alchemists: (am I boy or girl)

[personal profile] alchemists 2019-01-24 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you suggest I use instead?
badassfreakingoverlord: (looking at you)

[personal profile] badassfreakingoverlord 2019-01-25 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Honestly, I'd say you were a caster by nature. You tried taking up offensive magic?
alchemists: (Look at all these new notes)

[personal profile] alchemists 2019-01-27 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
But, I don't have that sorta power right now.
badassfreakingoverlord: (adrift in a sea of nothing)

[personal profile] badassfreakingoverlord 2019-01-28 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
...Oh, right. You don't instinctively have control of your mana power.

Okay, how about you join Team Zetta for a moment? That'll solve that problem.
alchemists: (What's a ps vita)

[personal profile] alchemists 2019-01-29 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I could just find a different weapon to use...
badassfreakingoverlord: (dramatic cape flare)

[personal profile] badassfreakingoverlord 2019-01-29 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I guess, but are you really the weapons sort to begin with?
alchemists: (Look at all these new notes)

[personal profile] alchemists 2019-02-02 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I've never had to use one so I can't say if it is my type or not.
badassfreakingoverlord: (adrift in a sea of nothing)

[personal profile] badassfreakingoverlord 2019-02-02 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, but you're all brains and less brawn. [Obviously, right?]
alchemists: (What's a ps vita)

[personal profile] alchemists 2019-02-04 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be correct, though I'm still a child with a human body now so if I train now I can get stronger at a faster rate.
badassfreakingoverlord: (looking at you)

[personal profile] badassfreakingoverlord 2019-02-06 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, but you also don't have full control of your mana power, which would let you ignore the whole "haven't actually reached full physical development" thing. It's one thing to plan for the future, but do you really have... uh, however long it takes for you humans to age, to wait?
alchemists: (Default)

[personal profile] alchemists 2019-02-09 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
That's taking the easy way out, I can't do that.

[ Taking the shortcut won't help her get stronger. ]
badassfreakingoverlord: (sweat drop)

[personal profile] badassfreakingoverlord 2019-02-09 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[Zetta blinks, and then blinks again, trying to understand how the heck that logic works.]

...It's not taking the easy way out to play to your strengths!
alchemists: (Crane game master)

[personal profile] alchemists 2019-02-11 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see it that way, mana control isn't a thing where I'm from. If I use the methods from your world then it's an outside way of getting strong which is cheating.
badassfreakingoverlord: (damn it ruffnut)

[personal profile] badassfreakingoverlord 2019-02-11 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, first, that's -- Look. Mana is a universal power. It's fundamental to reality. Just because you don't have control over it doesn't mean it isn't a thing where you're from. If you went to your universe's Netherworld you'd pick it up there, too. Second, by your logic you couldn't ever use your shinki to help you, because that's using a different world's technique. THIRD, I'm not giving you a damn thing except some help figuring it out. If you want to master it, it's all on you to practice and develop it. Fourth, mana power helps you do anything, but you don't actually need to master it to develop spellcasting. You WOULD need to really master it to become an ace swordfighter with that body and frame of yours.
alchemists: (More head pats)

[personal profile] alchemists 2019-02-14 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I understand the point of it and why you think I should at least try it.

[ If it's not cheating then there's no reason not to try it now..]

I'll try your way of doing things for a bit.
