January Training
Who: Everyone
What: Information and Training
When: March 24th, 2017
Where: Outside the Meeting Hall, the Far Shore
Summary: Training and informational sessions for newly arrived gods and shinki

Gods and shinki arriving at heaven's meeting hall are brought into small one-on-one meeting rooms as they appear, with a white-robed shinki offering them an explanation of their current role (God or Shinki), the name of the god they will represent (Gods) or the god they will serve (Shinki), and directions to the temple that will be their new home, regardless of role. During these initial meetings for Gods, paper and pens are provided as an unsubtle suggestion to take notes on the information they're given. For Shinki, there are stacks of informational pamphlets sitting out on a table inside the room, and which new shinki are offered as they are leaving the Meeting Hall.
Gods and Shinki alike are cordially invited to a training session beginning in early afternoon - several hours later - after they've had the chance to return to their homes, meet their new partners, and have their questions answered.
This time, it is implied that the Training Session will have a different purpose, so it is highly encouraged for ALL new gods and shinki to attend, no matter how long they have been in the Far Shore.

Divine Service
- New gods are assigned a time to meet with an attendant in white robes with a chrysanthemum on their robes bearing a notepad. Gods can request a changed time slot, but they are not given an option to avoid the appointment entirely. Unless they are bullied into allowing multiple gods in one interview session, they insist on one god per time slot. All meetings take place in private rooms similar to those for New God and New Shinki meetings.
The interview consists of questioning the God's commitment to serving the needs of their followers, the Far Shore, and in turn Amaterasu herself. There is the matter of "A God's Actions Are Always Just" and The Gods' Greatest Secret as well, to see if the God believes these are true and important. Do they espouse these opinions to other Gods? Will they respond to a summons by Amaterasu to defend The Far Shore? (If prodded, the attendant will admit that they are in fact an Old God, despite wearing clothing similar to Amaterasu's shinki. They will claim it an honor to do a favor for Amaterasu during her preparations.)
The second round of questions are about their shinki. What vessel forms do they take, in order starting with Exemplar? How do you use them in combat? What sort of opponents have you faced with your shinki in vessel form - human, ayakashi, or other? Do you have any plans to personally train your shinki for battle ahead? For wielders of multiple shinki, when was the last time you used all of them working together?
They insist that all questions are answered. Afterwards, the God is dismissed.
(An OOC breakdown for you characters IC answers to the God Interview...)
Tempering the Vessel
- Shinki are assigned time slots to meet with the white-robed shinki as well. While their sessions are shorter, the conversations are similar, and likewise held in private meeting rooms.
What is your vessel form? How many battles have you been in while in vessel form and what were your opponents? Do you have any opponents you would resist fighting alongside your God and fellow temple shinki? What have you done to increase your resilience while in vessel form? If you have other shinki at your temple, how often have you fought alongside them in vessel form? What spells do you know? Do you have any plans to further that training?
The shinki are then dismissed after all questions are answered.
(An OOC breakdown for you characters IC answers to the Shinki Interview...)
Shinki Training
- A well-appointed dojo has been prepared for newcomers to practice their physical or magical arts. There are five or six white-robed shinki present, who will willingly answer any questions or instruct newcomers in the use of the borderline. They accompany their answers, or their lessons, with an explanation of what is expected of a shinki and the importance of teamwork with other shinki and with gods.
Inside the dojo, there's room for several pairs to spar, and weapons are set up all along one wall, everything from polearms to rifles, chakrams to broadswords. They're all meant for practice, with edges dulled or padded to avoid any accidental deaths, but sparring partners will still have to be careful to avoid injury. Although there are many fewer white-robed shinki here than usual, except for the children, there is one adult shinki keeping an eye on things inside the dojo and one keeping an eye on things in the yard. They are willing to answer questions, help with borderlines or teach shinki new spells on request. Comment to the NPC REQUEST form to request a thread with one of them or if you have questions about handwaving an interaction. (Shinki characters who are interested in learning more about the borderlines or want to learn new shinki spells or songs may approach any of the training shinki for advice or instruction. Please remember to comment on the Shinki Spells page when your character begins to learn a new spell, excluding the borderline.)
Physical Training
- While each month the Far Shore attendants try to adapt the physical training to the Near Shore's weather and holidays, the weather is fair and any festive impulses have been subdued. This time, Physical Training encourages pitting a God with one or all of their Shinki against another God with one or all of their Shinki. This is touted as a benefit to the Shinki, so the white-robed shinki make clear that certain Shinki need this training more than others. For example, the ones who answered their Interview questions saying they hadn't spent much time in their vessel form, or fought in many battles, or hadn't fought with their fellow Shinki much - if at all.
There are Old Gods (NPCs - not run by a mod) who can be targeted as opponents, allowing the temple residents to gel as one fighting unit. (OOC: So that your multi-person thread can be limited to as few players as possible, if you choose.)
Rest and Refreshments
- Gods and shinki who are finished with their training can step into a large room in the Meeting Hall that has been set up with comfortable cushions and low tables. Moreso than other Training Sessions, there is a wide array of international alcoholic options this time. If you've heard of it and you can get drunk by imbibing it, it's probably here in a bottle or glass. Guests can help themselves, settle in, chat, and make new friends.
The Old Gods in particular will begin to regale the crowd at the end of the afternoon with War Stories from the ages past, speaking of their great deeds they performed as prayers for their followers, miracles to convert the unbelieving, powerful ayakashi they fought, and other amazing feats, especially if they involved a shinki at their side - who it was and the form they took. After many Old Gods have spoken, they turn to the New Gods as if in challenge to tell better stories, mocking words exchanged that imply the New Gods could not possibly have done anything so impressive in their short time in the Far Shore.

In Summary:
- Get all the information you can handle
- Veteran new gods and shinki are welcome to volunteer showing the ropes
- Practice sparring or shinki magic
- Answer Interview Questions
- Tell the truth - if you dare - or lie through your teeth... if you dare
- Tell War Stories
- Have fun~

I wasn't even surprised to find people are worshipping me. That's not new.
The difference, however, is that now it comes with some actual responsibility attached to this faith. As a pharaoh, I was, of course, responsible for the yearly flooding of the Nile. As a son of Zeus, I was to behave in a way fitting for my divine lineage. Still, it was all rather general. Nowhere near the level of day to day visceral importance that actual prayers from actual people do. But I see this could be a problem for some who do not have my experience.
[Clearly, that's the part he personally likes.]
Yes, they do! The more diverse one's experience the more one is able to see and understand. I find it endlessly fascinating how different all the other gods are.
[He's all for innovation and trying new things. To the extent that he did mortally scare a lot of people in the past with his willingness to adopt new customs and shake the established order.]
Yet, I understand too that any change can be unsettling to some that prefer more, how to say it, predictable environment.

[Isolationist policies. He means they were isolated as fuck.]
So, even thought it may not look as much from an outside point of view, the Heavens are already going a bit outside their comfort zone. [Now if they just could go a little further...] It makes me hopeful that, once we push past our current difficulties, things will become more harmonious between the different pantheons and generations.
[He just wants everyone to calm the fuck down. Is that so much to ask for.Is it.]
However, current circumstances are definitely... very difficult.
no subject
[Iskandar nods. He's aware of his tendency to rush to conclusions a bit too quickly. And then get angry over the said conclusions. Yet he's also ready to correct his misjudgement when he's finally calm enough to realise he was wrong.]
Then you give me hope. [He smiles.] Whenever there's a will, there a way for things to change. It may take time and no small amount of effort on both sides but it is at least a good start.
[Even before the Persian expedition Iskandar had his share of problems with moulding the many warring tribes of his country into one army. It's true that it was his father who started it but he left to Iskandar to finally test it in the field how well that plan worked. To make one people of those who were, at the very least, deeply distrustful if not directly hostile to each other... and work it did splendidly.
Surely, if mere mortals could do it, it can't be impossible for gods, hm?
The circumstances though...]
Challenging, I would say. They certainly make the whole process harder.

[There, ahead, is Kiwami setting up a small table in some of the warmer parts of the garden, away from all the fighting. Well. Relatively small. He's apparently taken Iskandar's huge size into consideration, because he's somehow managed to drag a whole bench over to act as the god's chair. Ebisu gets a normal chair, because he is the exact opposite of Iskandar, and Kiwami slides it out so that he can help Ebisu into it.]
[Listen. He needs it sometimes, okay? Ebisu should never be left unsurpervised.]
[Once Ebisu is settled down, he looks over at Iskandar.]
I hope that's alright.
[Kiwami did his best on very short notice.]
no subject
[Kiwami is a true miracle worker. One could easily fit four normal people on this bench so it is certainly wide and sturdy enough for Iskandar. It is in no danger of collapsing. Iskandar knows he's a danger to modern furniture so he doubly appreciates the thought.
There's one thing he wanted to tell Ebisu for some time now.]
Lord Ebisu, I didn't have an opportunity to thank you in person for your hospitality during the volcano incident.
[Iskandar puts his right hand over his heart and bows. He may be sitting on a bench in a garden but none of those things make his gesture look less royal.]
Please accept my deepest gratitude for the shelter you offered to me and my shinki.
no subject
[Ebisu folds his hands neatly on the table, smiling slightly.]
I am not a god whose domain covers the safety of others, fighting fires, or anything else which would have helped the situation. Still, I couldn't do nothing while other gods worked their hardest to solve the matter at hand. That my efforts were able to help you and yours is something I'm very glad to hear.
no subject
They were. And I was, in turn, able to go out and help others as a result. I couldn't do anything with the fire but at least I could fly over the most affected areas and pick up those who got stranded for whatever reason.
That wouldn't be possible if I didn't have a safe place to stay.
[Iskandar may be definitely more combat oriented but every single warrior ever needed a base of operation. With his own temple under ash and in constant danger of lava flows and flying boulders, he couldn't do anything until he had a place to relocate.]
no subject
[But for the time being, another one of his shinki is approaching the table. It took a little bit of hassling, but it's hard to tell that from the way Kimi is cheerfully beaming as he brings over a rolling tray with some cups and a warm teapot. Promptly, he begins to set it up, and prepare everything.]
no subject
My temple is small and I don't have a lot to offer but if you would ever find yourself in need of a warrior, please tell me.
[Or an army... because he has one. Not very modern by current standards. Still, the best army in human history. Literally legendary.]
no subject
[Reaching over, he delicately wraps his fingers around his own cup, seeming to almost test its weight in his palms. Give him just a moment, he has to make sure that he doesn't spill it.... His shinki also seem to be aware of it, as Kimi settles himself on Ebisu's other side, both watching just in case.]
Although I was told that a past incarnation of mine was highly skilled in combat and was able to make it through a highly difficult situation alongside a war god.
no subject
[Iskandar handles his cup with similar care but for entirely different reasons. He's been a bane of delicate, or frankly any, porcelain in his Temple for long enough to receive his own, military-grade reinforced steel cup from his Exemplar. That's a long story involving lots of pointy porcelain pieces, a significant volume of spilt tea and Satya declaring she's done acting as a surgeon tasked with taking out all the pieces of yet another smashed cup from his hand because he just can't be careful enough.]
May I have a proposition, my lord?
One of my shrines is located at a law firm. As a result, I tend to get prayers that call for legal or business expertise on a quite regular basis. None of which I possess. Some of those my Exemplar is able to handle. Then there are the difficult cases.
[There's a short sigh. The lawyers are his constant source of headache. Even if he really likes them, constantly overworked and overstressed people they are, he can't say he understands them. And that bothers him to no end. He's used to knowing what his people want and need.]
Would you be willing to assist me - not personally, of course, I'm aware how busy you are - in those? In return, I could take care of some of the combat oriented ones you have on your list.
[A favour for a favour. Everybody benefits.]
no subject
[The law and business have that in common, at least. Perhaps there's something to be admired in that kind of attention to detail, and how there are still so many dedicated to slipping through those details regardless. It's a cleverness and determination that Ebisu likes.]
Of course, for this sort of thing, I also like to make sure that it's all in writing myself. It helps me to remember things as well.
[A side effect, possibly, of his history of constant reincarnation.]
no subject
[He may not understand them much but Iskandar values his lawyer followers greatly. The dedication and ambition they all share is something he can relate to. Observing some of them in the court of law made him realize they fight their own battles even if their weapons are words. The most dangerous weapons in the world.]
It goes without saying that such arrangements require written form. It's just courtesy. Who should my Exemplar contact to prepare a proper document?
[If it was only a friendly agreement between two of them his word should be enough. But it is not. Their households would be involved and they fully deserve something tangible to refer to. Iskandar had written many letters and signed many treaties in his life. Half of those documents were not for his or the other party's sake alone. Similarly here his responsibility is not only for his own words and deeds but for his whole Temple, no matter how small it may be.]
no subject
[Kimi seems to lose himself in thought for a moment, gaze flicked up to the sky, before he figures out the answer. "Put very politely, young master, he's highly overworked, which isn't unusual." The non-polite way is that they're all dying again but, well, whatever. If this helps take care of their more action oriented prayers, then that should help the load.]
[Nodding, Ebisu smiles to Iskandar.]
Then I'll have you contact Kunimi and Takami. They'll work together to prepare something satisfactory for both our temples.
no subject
[Iskandar does feel pity for dropping additional work on poor Kunimi but hey, that's some work now that will lead to less work later. Doesn't sound that bad, eh?
If he were to spend his day just sightseeing or playing video games, he can as well go squash some ayakashi for Ebisu. Not that's anything bad in playing video games or going around and simply observing people with no other objective in mind. It's just that thing Iskandar is constantly in awe about this place and time.
How incredibly peaceful it is. Even with the unrest and the cultists and the volcano. This country is unimaginably prosperous.
A lot of prayers he gets is actually a plea for counsel and not the use of force. While that's not a problem in itself, he wishes his followers the best, but he wouldn't mind seeing a bit more of the action either.]
no subject
[As much as Japan might, with all the people who live within it. That's all Ebisu can ever wish for himself, after all. As long as they are made happy, he is, too. With the business aspect of this settled, he carefully picks up his cup. Both of his shinki seem to be watching its progress carefully, like they're expecting something bad to happen.]
I'm glad I was able to bring something good out of this day, then.
