[open] Failing/flailing
[ So the rules of this heaven are just as arbitrary and idiotic as the heaven that Konzen knows. That should come to no surprise. This whole ayakashi business is a lot of nonsense if you asked him. These eyeball monsters are practically everywhere, and yet a god or shinki alone is powerless against them. He always knew that divinity meant shit, but this was just rubbish. It meant being pinned down inside a school cafeteria snapping and arguing with Tenpou and Kenren while getting clobbered by ayakashi snot because three gods (two of whom were actual accomplished military officers) could do jack shit against it without their shinki.
This is the reason why Konzen is here today, in this small park on the Far Shore. He's brought his shinki Haru with him so he can figure things out on his own. Goku might also be his shinki now, but he knows that he can't really bother him very much. It's not safe to be around him. He furrows his brow a little at the thought, but pushes it to the back of his mind. ]
Miki.
[ The eerily silent young man beside him nods and disappears in a flash of light. In Konzen's hand is a naginata, made with a light but sturdy wood pole with red tassels and a curved blade on one end. It feels rather clumsy in his hand. He's never really handled such a weapon before. Or any weapon, for that matter. He stares down at it for a moment, wondering what to do next. Maybe he should have borrowed some How-To books from Tenpou's library before coming out here. ]
[open] Not suspicious at all
[ He feels a stabbing pain in the back of his neck. There is something else too, a heavy and anxious feeling that he can't quite wrap his head around. It makes him restless and upset. It keeps him up all night, pacing. He just knows something is wrong.
Goku.
What is happening to him? Konzen wants to rush over and see him, to check in on him. And yet, he knows that his very presence could trigger something bad. Make this cluster of dark emotions even worse. Maybe he'd known before he named Goku that this might happen. He just never realized how hard it would be. He feels so powerless again, and the fact that he might even be part of the problem just makes it that much more painful.
Nevertheless, he can't just sit around doing nothing.
And so he finds himself lurking about the front (or thereabouts) of Menrva's temple, not looking weird at all, of course not. He's hoping to maybe catch a glimpse of Goku without making himself too obvious...just to know that he's okay. ]

[ They call it 'the near shore,' which Konzen thinks must be this world's equivalent of Down Below. The human realm, that place beyond the Dimension Gate where they were all headed in their great escape. Of course, it never happened. They had said that the cherry blossoms bloom differently there compared to heaven. Something about being so close to death that they try that much harder to look alive. It sounded like philosophical BS, but somehow it made sense to him back then.
It feels strange, how he can just will himself to that realm now and find himself there, among the humans and the famous cherry blossoms (though they've mostly turned already by now). Tenpou used to come here a lot, bringing back strange knickknacks to add to his collection. Konzen walks around, awed by the sheer magnitude of things all around him. Buildings that soar high above his head. Vehicles that beep and move across massive boulevards. And the people! Konzen has never seen so many in his life. It's overwhelming.
He finally escapes into a smaller side street to take a breather. And hopefully grab something to drink. He finds himself in front of a large container known as a 'vending machine.' He's seen enough of these around to know that they dispense beverages when you insert coins in them. He has a little bit of money, from what he found lying around Helios's house. (Yeah he helped himself to it, whatever). He's not quite sure which ones he's supposed to use, though. He knits his brow together and pushes the coins around in his palm. ]

[ There's a small and secluded area of the park near Helios's house that Konzen has come to like. It's nicely shaded by a circle of trees, and it's an outdoor space that doesn't catch a lot of people's eyes as they're passing through the park. He finds himself going there in recent days to practice his naginata and to just get out of the house every once in a while.
And maybe the place reminds him of that one spot in heaven where they all had sake under the cherry blossoms. Just a little bit. He's not sentimental at all.
He heads toward there now, his shinki in hand and a bottle of water in the other. He's dressed casually, a basic pair of slacks and a button down shirt, with comfortable shoes for moving around in. He pauses suddenly when he hears a voice. It sounds weirdly familiar. He frowns.
Him.
Konzen almost turns right around. But it grates him a little bit to feel like he should have to retreat. Besides, much as he hates to admit it, the man isn't a complete stranger. In fact, he's probably much more than that. Maybe he can't avoid him forever. Still…he's not fond of being shot at, so he makes sure to not sneak up on the maniac. His footsteps should be obvious to anyone, but especially to someone with a hair-trigger like Sanzo. He pushes some leaves out of his way and steps into the clearing. ]

Why?
no subject
[ There's a lot he doesn't know. It's difficult, being on the outside looking in. Whoever designed this system needs to get shot.
(...where did that thought come from?) ]
What is she like? Elsa.
no subject
She's a kind person. She was a schoolteacher, before coming here, in fact.
no subject
I'm glad to hear it.
[ He thinks back to what Hakkai said about Susano'o, and seems to recall a brief look of distaste that had passed his face. ]
Did you say his other god was on ... fire?
no subject
He left Goku to fend for himself at home alone far too often. It's why we started letting him stay at this temple.
[And then there was the incident where he'd let Goku stay blighted for three days, and the time that he'd picked the boy up by his collar for talking out of turn, and, in short, Hakkai thinks it's a very good thing Goku isn't just Susano'o's shinki any longer.]
no subject
I see.
...Thank you. For taking care of him.
[ As though Hakkai would need his thanks. But Konzen is still of the mind that he's supposed to be Goku's guardian. If things were any different, he still would be. ]
no subject
[Good. Hakkai always likes seeing others respond the way he had to mistreatment of a young shinki; it's what had convinced him that Sanzo might work as a second shinki, for one thing. And Sanzo's double has the same easily offended sense of justice.
He crosses his arms and considers Konzen for a moment. From what Goku had told them at dinner...]
You're his god now, too, aren't you?
no subject
Goku asked me to name him. Back at the school.
[ He's not sure how these things are considered. When he first arrived, the idea of a shinki horrified him. Even now, his own odd and empty shinki Haru bothers him. But he's met other shinki who don't want any pity or sympathy. ]
no subject
[Hakkai considers the blonde god. He looks unsure, surprised -- expressions he'd never expect Sanzo to let show around someone who is a stranger to him.
None of them are all that much like their doubles, whether Gojyo's theory of reincarnation is correct or not. Even if it's correct, some changes would only be natural, but could two copies of the same soul even exist in the Heavens at the same time?
Well, Konzen's bound to be as confused about the whole thing as he is, Hakkai thinks. He'll stick to the practicalities for now.]
I don't know how you feel about shinki, but having named him does create a bond between you. Do you think you can be around him without upsetting him?
no subject
Yeah, we were trapped in the cafeteria when that ayakashi came.
[ The whole thing happened so quickly no one really stopped to consider all the consequences of what might happen later. Konzen might have called Kenren an idiot, but perhaps he's just the same. ]
And I don't know if I'll upset him.
[ He sighs and glances down briefly at his palm. ]
You would have to ask him.
[ Because while Konzen will do everything in his power not to cause him pain, there's nothing he can do if it's Konzen's very existence that is the cause. Short of dying again, anyway. ]
no subject
He certainly seems to have Goku's best interests at heart.
On the other hand, what if his mere presence brings back too many memories, or even just too many questions?]
I can ask him.
If it does seem that staying away from him is the best thing for him, though, you may need to revoke his name.
no subject
I didn't know you could do that.
[ And what happens to a shinki if all his gods revoke his name? ]
How is it done?
no subject
[Is he considering it? Or does he just want to know, in case it becomes necessary?
Hakkai's gaze stays on him, coolly thoughtful. He still doesn't know what he thinks of this stranger with Sanzo's face.
To be fair, he still isn't quite sure what he thinks of Sanzo, either. Konzen at least seems more willing to show his feelings.]
no subject
Sounds simple enough.
...what happens to the shinki when you take his name?
no subject
[Hakkai crosses his arms, the gesture almost uncomfortable. Elsa's already offered to release him once. Just how dependent is a shinki's existence on their name...?]
But I can say that, if the shinki has more than one name, there seems to be no ill effect.
[After all, when Hibari's name was revoked, Ren hadn't even noticed it happen.]
no subject
[ If releasing Goku is better for him, Konzen is willing to do it. Though perhaps he might feel that he ought to share in the burden of his painful feelings.
It's strange, getting answers from this Tenpou lookalike. Normally, Konzen would have gone to Tenpou if he had questions. What a weird place this is. ]
I should ... get going.
no subject
[Hakkai hesitates, looking at Konzen's face. The other man's clearly as uncomfortable as he is with all of this, if not more. But still... Hakkai doesn't know Konzen well. They've barely spoken, no matter how much of a superficial resemblance he might bear to Hakkai's junior fellow shinki.
What is clear, though, is that he and Sanzo share the same regard for Goku. It's the kind of care that can lead to making decisions for someone, for their own good, Hakkai suspects, and clears his throat.]
In the end, though... I think it should be Goku's decision who can name him, don't you?
If he doesn't want you to revoke it, there's no need.
no subject
Not that Konzen was going to do it without some further thought..
Goku is much grown now, compared to before. And even if he doesn't have his memories of his past life, perhaps Hakkai is suggesting the boy is old enough now to decide for himself. ]
...I'll keep that in mind.
[ He starts to turn away but adds more thing: ]
You'll talk to him?
no subject
As much as he feels like he should protect Goku, the boy's old enough to make his own choices, and neither Konzen nor Hakkai really has the right to override them.
He smiles wryly.]
Yes, I will.
