Operation distract Iskander
Who: Saber, Iskander, Suzaku, Edge and Waver
Where: Saber's temple and then somewhere on the Near Shore
What: Dinner at Saber's temple followed by Saber taking Iskander out drinking. (We do apologise)
When: May 20th
Warnings: Mentions of alcohol. I will add as we go on if applicable.
Dinner for Five
Suzaku had been in the kitchen for the last hour or so. He had been quite confident when Saber had mentioned friends coming over that he would be able to cook something. His cooking had been steadily improving and ever he could admit that his food tasted alright most of the time.
A couple of notable exceptions but there hadn't been any major disasters in at least a month. He hadn't seen how adding two more people would make a difference.
To be fair it wasn't a disaster. Yet. But there had been more things than Suzaku had thought to keep track of and he had no idea how he could look at a machine and understand how everything fit and connected together and yet a meal was so complicated it might as well be magic.
It does mean that when guests arrived it will be someone other than Suzaku who opens the door.
Drinking time
[After the meal Iskander and Saber go drinking. Try not to cause any diplomatic incidents.]
Waiting up...
[Leaving the shinki to do their best not to fret about their gods and the trouble they might get into.]

[After extensive Internet search Iskandar was able to find out two movies about himself and he is deeply conflicted in his opinion of them. He's not exactly sure he likes the fact they exist. People always told the weirdest stories about him but those two... Eh...
To have many of them this Saber's friend must be more famous than Iskandar himself. All the more reasons to find out more about him. Still, that last declaration gives him pause.]
A reason? What do you mean?
no subject
[That's hardly a laugh, you nerd.]
Well, they generally frame it as "ah, the king has not yet returned from the Crusades and so his villainous brother oppresses the peasantry," though sometimes they do mention the reason that I hadn't yet returned was because I was being held for ransom and he tried to pay them to keep me!
[He spent some time shortly after he was summoned reading a biography of his brother, which he found quite interesting. In life, he didn't particularly care what John was doing unless it involved him directly. It's something he feels he should apologize for should they ever have the opportunity to meet face to face, though he doubts such a thing will ever happen.]

Ransom? [Iskandar whistles.] How did you get captured anyway?
[...but then there's that last sentence. He nods with a sigh]
Eh, scheming relatives. Believe me, I can understand that. Though I actually tried to keep my own brother out of any intrigues.
[He pauses. He tried. It didn't exactly backfire...but it didn't work as he wanted either.]
Which I managed to do for some time but not long enough.
no subject
[He laughs a little, less of the fake laugh from earlier and more of a self-deprecating chuckle.]
Or anyone else, for that matter. But that aside, I wish the tale of how I got captured was a bit more exciting, but the truth is that I took ill and was trying to return home by ship, only to be shipwrecked and forced to take the land route home. And, well, there was a very good reason I was taking the sea route in the first place. It was inevitable that I would have to pass through the territory of someone who held a grudge for one thing or the other.

Has there ever been a royal family at peace with itself? I cannot recall any that was. Mine certainly wasn't.
[It's the same story with the second part of Saber's story. Just a lot of bad luck.]
Shipwrecked, huh? Tough situation to find oneself in.
[Still marginally better than in antiquity. There would be no ransom if Saber got shipwrecked in Iskandar's times. He'd just be sold into slavery and probably never heard of again.]
no subject
[And that hasn't changed, either. Just ask his shinki.]

[Enjoy being smacked right in the spine by King of Conquerors. Ouch.]
Then you must have quite the stories to tell if getting shipwrecked, held captive by enemies with your brother refusing to pay ransom for your freedom is not the toughest of predicaments you got yourself into!
[Wouldn't be a Heroic Spirit if both of you didn't have some heroic stupid in you. That's a fact. Just ask Waver. He'll confirm.]

I wouldn't want to sound like I'm bragging. A wiser man probably wouldn't have left home in the first place.
[For all that he talks about himself, he's always strangely humble about it. Almost as if he doesn't want people to think well of him.]

[Iskandar shakes his head slowly. Nothing can't be further from the truth Saber.]
To have stayed at home, to wither on both mind and body with the passing years and die in your own bed out of nothing else than old age? With nothing to your name other than "he lived long"?
No, Lionheart. This may be wiser for the common man. But not for a king. Never for a king.
no subject
Well, staying home wouldn't have meant staying out of trouble! I didn't die until I'd returned from the Crusades, after all.
[Which is a miracle in and of itself.]
And one, I think, would expect a king to spend at least a little time ruling his kingdom.
no subject
[He might be playing this for laughs but there's one thing he's not saying. That he would probably never say. That he lost the will to go home. In truth, he lost the will to do anything at all. Somewhere
that would be Ecbatanahe lost everything he ever cared for. For what was left of his short life nothing was able to replace that loss.Becoming a Heroic Spirit helped though. Mainly by negating that loss.]One would expect that avenging my father and conquering the Persian empire would be enough for me. But it wasn't.
[Also ruling is boring. He hates it. He would prefer to have people do this for him instead so he can go and conquer some more until there's nothing to conquer anymore.]
