003 | Save The Boats

Who: Everyone!
What: It's a few days after Hinamatsuri - time for a party!
When: Late evening (March 5, 2016) into early morning (March 6, 2016)
Where: The banks of the Kamo River
Summary: The Heavens have thrown together an outdoor party to celebrate Spring and ALSO to ask the Far Shore residents to keep the boats from Hinamatsuri from coming to shore.

Hinamatsuri is celebrated in Japan on March 3 every year. It is a festival to celebrate all of the young girls of Japan, not as important as their own birthdays, but certainly a big day for all families with a little girl among their household. It's perfectly normal for all of the cuties to dress up and get all sorts of delightful treats out of the day.

One of the normal festivities is a ceremony during which ornamental dolls are placed on tiers on boats and floated down the river. It is thought that all of the bad luck for the coming year floats down the river with the dolls, taking that bad luck away from their young girls to keep them safe for another year.

But the boats don't always make it all the way down the river like they're supposed to, and the Heavens sometimes like to make sure that the year will be full of less bad luck for the people of Japan. So they have decided to have the almighty gods do some legwork and disguised it as a fun Springtime party! They expect gods and shinki alike to push the boats away from the shoreline wherever they see them venturing near.

New gods and shinki will have been ushered immediately to the party as well, given all of the normal information, and then left to mingle among their new cohorts. This is a perfect opportunity to introduce the newbies to both their co-workers and the kinds of jobs they'll be expected to perform.

Buffet

A luxurious buffet is set up for everyone to enjoy. There are all kinds of foods to enjoy, though they all seem to be of a local variety. The Heavens have apparently used the funding from their own temples to purchase local food and support local businesses at the same time. In particular among the food and copious amounts of booze, you will find some Hinamatsuri staples - hina-arare, hishi mochi, chirashizushi, and a salt-based clam soup called ushijiru. Among the booze you'll find shirozake, a sake made from fermented rice, also a regular fare of Hinamatsuri.

The Boats

As if they are literally overflowing with bad luck, the boats seem to be making a desperate attempt to land themselves upon the shoreline. They are reluctant to make their way back into the water and will gladly run people down if they're allowed to and are happy to ram into someone over and over again to try and get their way. When they are finally pushed back to the center of the river, they will begrudgingly continue on their way. Of course, some of them will simply sink because of the weight of all that bad luck, but who can really blame them.

Children

As expected of a day dedicated to celebrating children, there are dozens of children running around and playing games during the festivities. It's hard to distinguish, but some of them appear to be human children while others are shinki. They are happy to let anyone in on their games and will gladly bother adults to come play with them or to let them try some of the liquor. (Mods will be available to play out any child interactions you may want, just flag us down.)

Counselling

Off to the side, there is a tiny table set up with a small, nicely written sign that reads "Gentle Counselling". On the other side of the table is a sweetly smiling shinki who is willing to listen to your problems and answer any questions you might have. She is also here to help out any gods that are having a hard time dealing with knowing about how their shinki died and any shinki that is having trouble coming to terms with the fact that they are dead.

In Summary:
  • Keep the boats off the shore
  • Enjoy the food and booze and spring atmosphere
  • Have some fun with cute little kids
  • Seek counselling if you need it!
  • Flag the mods in the top thread if you'd like an NPC
  • Have fun~

[Oh. Oh, this is a god. Uh. He's not sure if he's being rude or anything, but she seems like she's in a good mood, so maybe he's okay!]

Nice to meet ya! [He grins, setting down the bamboo pole for the moment. The threat of boats seems to be held off for now.] Yeah! It's still kinda weird, but the food's great!

[No, he's not being rude at all! At some point (probably very soon) it'll come out that she's been working with teenagers for years and years now, so she's seen it all. Or most of it. Still, he's fine, and Elsa is glad to talk with someone so upbeat.]

I agree. It's all new to me, and it's all delicious.

[And it's nice to be here. Even if they're confined to Japan, there's a lot to see and experience. It'll make the time go by quickly, but hopefully it won't be too much of a distraction from the fact that, honestly, she needs to be able to go back home at some point.]

So, are you here with anyone? [She means, a god, or another shinki.]
konobakazaru: (But it's such a tiny bag of chips though)

[personal profile] konobakazaru 2016-05-07 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa, really? You don't know what any of this stuff is? But there's shumai and persimmons and... Well, I guess some of it's stuff I don't know, either.

[Some of this stuff, he's not really seen. But it's all delicious! He's not sure why he only knows some and not all of it, but maybe he's not from this country. That might explain it. All the more reason to explore the buffet, though.]

Oh, yeah! I'm with that Susano'o guy.
arealhardnose: (innnnteresting)

[personal profile] arealhardnose 2016-05-08 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmhm. I'm from California, in America. [And she spent ... rather a long time away from anything that wasns't the most basic of foods, so.] I might have seen some of it before, but the names escape me. [Or she only knows their English equivalent. It happens.]

Susano'o. [It takes her a second to place him.] Oh-- he's the one who talks in math terms, right? [That's maybe the nicest thing one can say about him, right??]
konobakazaru: (but but but but but but)

[personal profile] konobakazaru 2016-05-08 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Where's that? [None of that sounds familiar to him at all. Just by that alone, he knows that can't be where he's from. Then again, Japan doesn't sound familiar, either, but Heaven does, in a weird way...]

Yeah. He's kinda weird. [Goku figures he can say that sort of stuff about his own god.] I don't understand half of what he's sayin' sometimes...
arealhardnose: (laughter)

[personal profile] arealhardnose 2016-05-08 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It's cross the ocean from Japan. [Never mind that she might be from another world altogether. THat's not something she really wants to get into.

Goku is so honest, though. Elsa snickers.]
It just takes some getting used to, I bet. Though if you'd like, Hakkai and I are going to open a school in my temple, so you can come to the library and read up on math yourself.
konobakazaru: (Pedobear is touching me again.)

[personal profile] konobakazaru 2016-05-08 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, there's an ocean? Really? Is it close?

[He's never seen the ocean! ... he thinks, anyway. But he knows he's heard of it, and it's big, and there's crabs and waves and good food, and if it's nearby, he's so going. Just you wait.]

Ehh... I think I'd just confuse myself readin' about math. [He scratches his cheek with one finger, glancing away.] But I think I'd like learnin' other stuff! There's gonna be a lot of other shinki there, too, right?

[personal profile] arealhardnose 2016-05-09 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
The ocean is likely where this river flows to, but even if it's not, it can't be too far from here. [Elsa isn't up on her geography of Japan, but it's an archipelago with a lot of relatively narrow islands, so walking east or west will take one to the ocean more quickly than going north or south.

The ocean is lovely, and you should definitely visit it sometime, Goku!]

Well, I'm okay at math, so if you do want to learn about it, I can teach you a little bit. I'm no expert, though. [Hmm, maybe Sho would like to teach at the school. She'll have to ask him later. Right now, her attention is on Goku, to whom she smiles.] Yes, and gods are welcome to come too. Hakkai and I will be teaching, and if there's anything you can and would like to teach, you're welcome to it. The same as anyone else, really.
konobakazaru: (You look so stupid!)

[personal profile] konobakazaru 2016-05-09 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
You think so? I'm gonna check it out!

[Maybe not right now, but later. Totally later. He'll follow this river and see how long it takes! Provided Susano'o doesn't need him, anyway.]

If you wanna teach me, I'll try! [He gives her a grin in response.] I can teach, though? I don't even know what I'd teach...
arealhardnose: (laughter)

[personal profile] arealhardnose 2016-05-09 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Good, you'll love it.

[As for teaching him-- how much can she trust his assessment? He could be very intelligent and just not remember it, after all.]

Well, that's up to you -- you want to come to school, not if I want to teach you. [She gives him a smile, to show she means it, and that she's not scolding him.] The same with teaching. If you're very good at something, or if you become skilled at something, then you're welcome to talk to me and Hakkai about teaching it.
