003 | Save The Boats

Who: Everyone!
What: It's a few days after Hinamatsuri - time for a party!
When: Late evening (March 5, 2016) into early morning (March 6, 2016)
Where: The banks of the Kamo River
Summary: The Heavens have thrown together an outdoor party to celebrate Spring and ALSO to ask the Far Shore residents to keep the boats from Hinamatsuri from coming to shore.

Hinamatsuri is celebrated in Japan on March 3 every year. It is a festival to celebrate all of the young girls of Japan, not as important as their own birthdays, but certainly a big day for all families with a little girl among their household. It's perfectly normal for all of the cuties to dress up and get all sorts of delightful treats out of the day.

One of the normal festivities is a ceremony during which ornamental dolls are placed on tiers on boats and floated down the river. It is thought that all of the bad luck for the coming year floats down the river with the dolls, taking that bad luck away from their young girls to keep them safe for another year.

But the boats don't always make it all the way down the river like they're supposed to, and the Heavens sometimes like to make sure that the year will be full of less bad luck for the people of Japan. So they have decided to have the almighty gods do some legwork and disguised it as a fun Springtime party! They expect gods and shinki alike to push the boats away from the shoreline wherever they see them venturing near.

New gods and shinki will have been ushered immediately to the party as well, given all of the normal information, and then left to mingle among their new cohorts. This is a perfect opportunity to introduce the newbies to both their co-workers and the kinds of jobs they'll be expected to perform.

Buffet

A luxurious buffet is set up for everyone to enjoy. There are all kinds of foods to enjoy, though they all seem to be of a local variety. The Heavens have apparently used the funding from their own temples to purchase local food and support local businesses at the same time. In particular among the food and copious amounts of booze, you will find some Hinamatsuri staples - hina-arare, hishi mochi, chirashizushi, and a salt-based clam soup called ushijiru. Among the booze you'll find shirozake, a sake made from fermented rice, also a regular fare of Hinamatsuri.

The Boats

As if they are literally overflowing with bad luck, the boats seem to be making a desperate attempt to land themselves upon the shoreline. They are reluctant to make their way back into the water and will gladly run people down if they're allowed to and are happy to ram into someone over and over again to try and get their way. When they are finally pushed back to the center of the river, they will begrudgingly continue on their way. Of course, some of them will simply sink because of the weight of all that bad luck, but who can really blame them.

Children

As expected of a day dedicated to celebrating children, there are dozens of children running around and playing games during the festivities. It's hard to distinguish, but some of them appear to be human children while others are shinki. They are happy to let anyone in on their games and will gladly bother adults to come play with them or to let them try some of the liquor. (Mods will be available to play out any child interactions you may want, just flag us down.)

Counselling

Off to the side, there is a tiny table set up with a small, nicely written sign that reads "Gentle Counselling". On the other side of the table is a sweetly smiling shinki who is willing to listen to your problems and answer any questions you might have. She is also here to help out any gods that are having a hard time dealing with knowing about how their shinki died and any shinki that is having trouble coming to terms with the fact that they are dead.

In Summary:
  • Keep the boats off the shore
  • Enjoy the food and booze and spring atmosphere
  • Have some fun with cute little kids
  • Seek counselling if you need it!
  • Flag the mods in the top thread if you'd like an NPC
  • Have fun~

That's not what he meant-though Hibari had a feeling this man didn't care at all. Him dodging his attacks with ease was frustrating him, the same with his calm and serene attitude. Did he not know what a fight was? Did he not know HOW to fight or when to tell someone wanted one?

"I don't need any special place," Hibari said, once again trying to attack by sweeping the man's legs from under him.

woops i was rolling a different tense than you, changing that here

Slaine almost seemed to backstep before Hibari made the attempt, if one were watching closely enough. It didn't seem that this guy would be very easily deterred...and that could be a problem. Fighting here could be disruptive, if not damage the displays and be troublesome in a variety of ways.

If it came to it, he might have to neutralize the problem, if he could.

Words would be better though, so he had to make another attempt at reasoning...useless as that was appearing to be. "I don't know about you, but I'm not here to mess around."

it ok i didnt even notice

Hibari practically scoffed-how dare he accuse him of not being completely serious? "Neither am I."

And he practically grinned, digging his feet in and launching at the guy just as fast as he could, preparing to rain down several blows in hopes that at least one would hit.

Anticipating threats was one thing, and reacting to them was another. While Slaine was unnaturally quick, one punch glanced off his cheek before he could avoid it. With a flurry of attacks like that, he could know danger was coming, but...well.

One could only avoid so many things from so many fronts.

If it hurt him, one wouldn't know it from the way his expression failed to change. A slight narrowing of his eyes, a tight set of his jaw, and naught else. It seemed that he wasn't getting out of this without neutralizing his attacker, then.

Well...he felt he had a sense of the type. "Is that really all you can do?" If he could goad him into really going full tilt...

It worked perfectly-he probably didn't even need to goad him that much, as Hibari liked to fight that much. He just raised his arm like he was twirling his tonfa-wait, he didn't have them.

Hibari saw the fact that attacking quickly had gotten him to break through, so he did something similar again, only this time adding a kick with almost his full force behind it.

[personal profile] ex_adept179 2016-04-17 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
He could only wonder how many people were this inclined to pick fights out of nowhere, but it was a fleeting thought. With more attacks being thrown his way he had to pick and choose which to avoid...

Which ultimately led to him letting that kick strike him, gritting his teeth past the pain. Even half-stumbling he was able to catch his leg and shove back with his own weight in an effort to knock the guy off-balance and hopefully end his momentum.

If he showed enough stopping force, that'd surely end this.

Hibari was a strange and ornery individual in that right, that stemmed from his love of fighting coupled with his inability to even socialize.

He was suprised when his foot actually connected, and pretty solidly at that. It was thrown back of course, and he stumbled backwards for a couple steps, but Hibari stopped his attack.

For entirely different reasons than Slaine thought. "Why are you holding back?"

[personal profile] ex_adept179 2016-04-17 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
It was a curious question, and it took Slaine a moment to come up with an answer. Why was he showing restraint? So many reasons crowded to the forefront of his mind that he had to wonder why anyone would even ask the question.

But ultimately he had to shrug and offer the simplest one.

"We're not enemies." If they were, he supposed he couldn't hold back then. But he had to surmise that this guy was probably like him - he noticed his existence for one thing - and so they were part of the same effort. The same side.

Why engage in friendly fire?

[personal profile] disciplineking 2016-04-18 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
From the look on Hibari's face, he didn't exactly accept that answer. They weren't enemies? As far as he was concerned, everyone was an enemy to him right now. Someone managed to get him, and since he didn't know who it was, the Cloud Guardian was taking it out on everyone else.

It felt like the right thing to do. "So you don't respect me enough to feel fear."

He held himself upwards, as regally as he could-somehow, Hibari felt it was unusual for people to NOT fear him and his position. "I don't like people like you."

[personal profile] ex_adept179 2016-04-18 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Slaine had the sense that he was accustomed to hearing such words; they didn't feel new. There was no splash of hurt or concern at the notion of being disliked, of being part of some group ill-favored by another. Perhaps that lack of newness spoke of something, but then, perhaps it didn't.

"I don't equate fear and respect. To fear is to shrink away from - to respect is to acknowledge." And he hadn't failed to acknowledge this person, as far as he was concerned.

He thought to suggest that if he didn't respect him, his conduct would've reflected it, but...well. Formality was a more comfortable stance, Slaine knew this much of himself in short order. "And I have acknowledged you, or we wouldn't be speaking now."

[personal profile] disciplineking 2016-04-18 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
His attitude reminded him a little bit too much of-someone. There was an annoying prickle in his memory again before it vanished just as easily. But it didn't matter; this man was a weak animal. In Hibari's world, strength in fighting was true strength, and someone holding back from that wasn't respecting his skills at all. They were laughing at him, thinking they could get away with that when he put his life on the line.

Contrary to expectations, Hibari DID have standards and rules when it came to everything. "You were holding back on me. That doesn't mean you've acknowledged my skill."

His first answer to this was ponderous silence. The notion that holding back was some sort of insult hadn't occurred to him, but at the same time, it wasn't as though they were in some sort of tournament or contest. So far as he knew, he never entered into competition with this guy.

"...Tell me how I'd profit in aiming to injure you, exactly." He broke the silence with this, folding his arms under the supposition that present company wouldn't be attacking too abruptly again. "If I were successful it'd be one less person doing the job we're tasked with - weakening the cause."

Shooting oneself in the foot was surely never a good idea.

If only he'd seen Hibari's method of dealing with the boats...

It was clear the two seemed to have a divide in their thinking because Hibari was genuinely confused about Slaine's reason. How he would profit? Of course he would profit.

"That's absurd. You'd profit by winning and killing me." He didn't once believe the two of them were even on the same side-at least for the moment. He didn't get teamwork at all.

[personal profile] ex_adept179 2016-04-22 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Can you tell me what practical or material gain there could possibly be?" The question was presented calmly, without bite or sarcasm, even if the thought of profiting from a stranger's death - or was it double death? - was absurd to him. It seemed clear enough that they didn't see eye-to-eye on this issue.

Knowing what this fellow thought there was to gain might shed some light on the matter, at least. Not that he anticipated changing his mind on something like this.

What was he talking about? Practical or material gain? That didn't matter. He would defeat Hibari, and that was enough! If he could. If he could. Becauase he knew the moment he thought about defeat, he'd admit it in his mind.

"There is no meaning in life if you are defeated. Then the one who defeated you can take your name, title and your life. You will die or worse-be left with nothing but humiliation at the hands of another. They will control you to your dying days."

With each word, Hibari began stepping closer until he was up in his personal space. "I won't allow that to happen to me."

[personal profile] ex_adept179 2016-04-25 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
"...Yet for all that, you're the one who chose to engage me without any idea just what I'm capable of." He didn't back down, not particularly threatened or intimidated. This guy didn't strike him as the worst he could deal with - he wasn't someone with all the power while Slaine had none. That would be far, far worse.

Yielding ground would give the appearance of weakness...and somehow he sensed that such a thing was disadvantageous. Would leave an opening. For what, exactly, he couldn't say. But that was the feeling he had.

For all that they were practically the same size, he stood as straight and tall as he might. "You'd be much better off knowing precisely what you're dealing with, if you believe those are the consequences of loss."

[personal profile] disciplineking 2016-04-26 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
Hibari just stared at him. Was this man-boy, whatever age he was-serious? Did he truly think that the cloud guardian didn't think about that?

He did, in the back of his mind, always going and calculating and evaluating his opponents, but that was during a fight. He didn't need something like that after he'd already decided to fight.

"I don't lose."

[personal profile] ex_adept179 2016-04-26 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
"But you don't have the first clue what my strengths or weaknesses are. Only so much can be gauged from appearances, and for all you know, I cultivate a certain veneer to mislead prospective threats." It would be a perfectly reasonable measure, not that Slaine had considered such a thing necessary up to this point. Even now he doubted there was a need...

At least if this other shinki's behavior toward him was telling him anything.

"Neither of us can remember whether we've won or lost - but apparently, we died young. That's all we know, isn't it?"
disciplineking: (slightly less death)

[personal profile] disciplineking 2016-04-28 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Clearly Slaine hit a nerve because the next second, Hibari was back to being angry and taking a swing at the kid.

"What do you know about me?" He snarled.

[personal profile] ex_adept179 2016-04-29 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
He dodged that attack easily enough, noting the change in tone.

"I know you're dead, just as I am. And that you're concerned with martial strength, and appear to be competitive. Shall I continue?" Because there was more, for all the brevity of this encounter.
