008 | Sakura 2.0: You Can (Not) Have A Picnic

Who: Everyone!
What: Sakura picnic
When: Evening April 25
Where: The same sakura park as last time
Summary: Amaterasu has had a request to return to view the cherry blossoms one more time and she has decided to make it happen.

The cherry blossoms have yet to all fall from the trees, and so the Heavens have seen fit to hold another blossom viewing - this time with a picnic instead! The trees themselves do not have the ethereal glow they had last time, but there is a sweet scent that fills the air, drawing anyone inexorably towards the beautiful trees.

As a surprise, Amaterasu has sent her counselors to join the picnic as well. They can be found wandering around and enjoying the sights and foods just the same as anyone else.

All new arrivals will have been whisked away to the picnic by Amaterasu's shinki so that they can enjoy this escape just the same as everyone else. It seems Amaterasu doesn't want to leave anyone out this time, and so many of her shinki are milling around as well, clad in white with the golden chrysanthemum embroidered on their outfits.

Picnic

Dozens upon dozens of brightly colored picnic blankets have been provided for the guests to use. On top of that, pre-packed picnic boxes have been provided as well. They range from American-esque picnic baskets all the way to Japanese style bentos. Everyone is free to take as many boxes as they would like to and share among each other. Every picnic box has something different for everyone to enjoy.

Cherry Blossoms

The blossoms are falling freely now, showing that they are on their last leg of life. But the scent of the cherry blossoms has become so intense that it draws anyone who smells it towards the trees. You might find that if you breathe in too deeply or too long, it's like an intoxication equivalent to having drunk all night long. Good luck keeping up straight!

Performance

A performance stage has been erected in the park by the Heavens and there are a number of shinki who will sing and dance or perform in other ways whenever they have a spare moment. Gods and their shinki are encouraged to get up on the stage and perform as well, if they have anything that they would like to perform for their fellows.

Fire

Around sunset, the festivities will come to a screeching halt as a sudden burst of flames spreads through the trees, igniting them one by one. The spread of the fire is so rapid that it is very obviously unnatural. It will take a lot of teamwork and a large number of hands to put the fire out - or maybe you prefer to just run away. Either way, it will be hard to miss the pieces of paper that fly through the air, all bearing the same words: Down with the Heavens! Down with Amaterasu!

In Summary:
  • Enjoy the cherry blossoms
  • Enjoy the picnic food
  • Meet Amaterasu's counselors
  • View or participate in the performance
  • Put out the fire
  • Have fun~

[ Gojyo's own thoughts are running in similar (albeit a bit slower) lines. The heavens got them high, and the heavens are always listening. Clearly the safest place to be is on Earth, among ordinary humans. Ordinary humans who don't pose any kind of risk to them at all, even as intoxicated as they are.

With a nod that he hopes looks tolerant -- silly shinki, not wanting to enjoy the party Amaterasu put on! -- Gojyo takes a deep breath and hauls himself to his feet. It's not an easy process, but he gets there in the end. All that adrenaline might be pumping the floral fumes through his system at rocket speed, but it's also got his muscles on a hair trigger. He could probably run to Japan at this rate.

But he doesn't want to go to Japan. What would happen, he wonders, if he concentrated on getting home? Home, to Chang'an, to their little house at the edge of the forest. It's one of the places in the world he knows best -- knows exactly how far from the temple it is (too damn far), knows the curves of the hillsides and the welcoming stink of the city.

It probably won't work. But what's the worst that can happen? They end up inside a mountain? Or nowhere? ...If the reward is getting home, that's a risk Gojyo's willing to take.

He holds out a (really unsteady, slightly clammy) hand to Hakkai.
]

Let's go home.

[Hakkai gets a knee under himself, painstakingly careful not to wobble, or trip, or lose his balance, and heaves himself slowly to his feet after Gojyo. The world spins and tips on its axis. It's not helping at all, he thinks, swallows to settle a stomach that only even has tea in it, and reaches out to take Gojyo's hand.

Are you sure, he could ask, but he wants to go home too. He wants his room, the little one he'd claimed at Elsa's precisely because it was small and plain: he wants his notes and his bed. He especially wants his bed, because lying down and sleeping it off sounds like an excellent plan for the rest of the evening. Gojyo's temple isn't familiar yet, and his poor mindless shinki is like a household ghost, but it will definitely do.

He nods.]

Let's, please.

[ He wraps his arms around Hakkai -- he doesn't know what would happen if he lost his grip on somebody when they were teleporting and he has no intention of finding out today -- and closes his eyes, and pictures it. Chang'an. The busy streets. The forest. The flat dusty wagon road between the two, and the much short winding footpath through the trees. The colors of the place. Familiar faces. Familiar flavors.

And he wishes.

He'd planned for them to appear above the treeline, but instead they reappear in suburban Xian, barely an inch above the tarpapered roof of a row of apartments, with bustling shops beneath. Gojyo's feet hit the roof with a gentle thump, and he sways, disoriented. This... this isn't where he meant for them to be.

[Hakkai's feet hit the roof, and he catches himself with a hand on Gojyo's arm, glancing around. This really isn't home. This isn't even the Heavens. This is... a city? A modern-looking city, with glowing neon signs interspersed with printed and painted ones up and down the row of shops below. All in Chinese. It feels oddly homey, yes.

Is it even in Japan? He glances at Gojyo, confused. The arms wrapped around him are starting to be a little uncomfortable, but if they're about to teleport somewhere else he shouldn't pull away.]

This isn't the temple.

[Is Gojyo really that drunk? They're lucky they're not halfway through a wall.]

[ They aren't about to teleport. Gojyo lets Hakkai go, and hurries to the edge of the roof (that is, once he's sure his legs will hold him). The air is filthy, choking with exhaust and smoke, but for all that his head feels clearer already. Sounds like there was something to that gas theory after all. ]

No. Not th'temple.

[ It's not the same at all. That one street, there, that's the same route, and the cross-street, there. He peers down one length of the road, then the other, searching desperately for something -- anything -- familiar. Some of the buildings are almost the same, but... but it's not Chang'an.

His shoulders fall.
]

I was tryin' to take us home. [ Ashamed of his foolishness, he smiles apologetically at Hakkai over his shoulder. ] Shoulda known better.
