What: Emergency demon fighting
When: Late May 5-Early May 6
Where: Just outside of Tokyo
Summary: The demon from the school has reared its ugly head again and needs to be taken down.

On the evening of May 5, the Heavens suddenly receive an influx of prayers from people in and around a certain town just outside of Tokyo. There seem to be a lot of people in the area that have suddenly stopped responding normally (or at all). The situation continues to spread as the night goes on until not only is the whole town suffering from this malady, but the neighboring towns are starting to become affected as well.

With so many gods and shinki on hand - including new ones that have just appeared - the Heavens have issued a request for any available gods and shinki to go investigate what might be happening down on the Near Shore. New gods and shinki will be given the low-down on what's happening, but not much more than that.

The situation will continue to expand until just a little before dawn, when the demon finally has enough power to revive.

Drained Humans

Many humans in the affected areas are walking around despondently. Oftentimes, they are just walking into things or getting hit by things. There have been a few car-related incidents as well. Anyone who was present for the high school incident will recognize these symptoms as something that was happening to people in the school. The glazed looks, the spiritless responses and reactions. So this should be fairly familiar to some.

No One's Safe

Unfortunately, being in the town will start to wear on anyone who is there. Gods and shinki alike will find themselves growing more despondent the longer they spend in the town. All of their energy will be slowly sapped from their bodies, and shinki in particular will feel almost like their existence is draining away.

Hellish Circle

There is a large park in the center of the town. Drawn all around this park is a magic circle, large enough to encompass the whole park. There are candles around the edges of the circle, and in the center there is a cup filled with blood covered by a mask with a swirling eye pattern on it. Stepping into this circle will not only make you extremely tired and suddenly drained, but it will also bring bat-like ayakashi bearing down on you.

The Demon

The Demon itself rears its ugly head just a little before dawn, springing out from the center of the magic circle and looking right pleased with itself. It stands about 5'8" tall, so it is largely unimposing, but there is an aura about it that makes it undeniable that it is powerful. The demon will gladly fight anyone who comes at it, though most he will just shove out of the way without a second thought.

[Oh, well, if Kurama's just gonna throw that out there in the open.]

Yeah, I had a feeling. [But you probably already knew that, didn't you, Kurama?] It's just all... kinda weird, isn't it? I mean, being dead, fighting demons, something about that all feels pretty normal, but the whole not knowing what I know is kinda getting to me.

[Hey, if Yusuke can handle hearing it, Kuwabara will clearly be fine. It's not like Kurama's getting into the details!]

Your abilities will make themselves clear in time, I hope, and I'll do my best to help where I can, but I'm afraid we don't have much time for that tonight. [Shinki pasts are a tricky business, after all, and one Kurama hasn't actually had much experience with so far. Yaaay godhood?] Do you know how to use your phone yet?

Yeah, there's all these people wandering around looking like zombies. [There definitely isn't time for training right now, and he's not that worried about his past. It's, well, the past, and there's obviously more important stuff going on.]

Huh, my phone? You mean this thing? [he pulls out a flip phone and holds it out to Kurama] I haven't really had a chance to play around with it. Is this thing really a phone? It's so small, and there's no cord!

It is! We're in the future now, and phones are far more convenient. [Kurama takes Kuwabara's phone as he answers, navigating the menus quickly to set his own number as one of Kuwabara's speed dials and then send a selfie over for ease of identification. (He considers the selfie with Forrest in their flower crowns from the last time a bunch of new arrivals showed up, but that seems like it's just asking for trouble, so instead he uses the awesome hair selfie Yusuke got.)]

If you need to talk to me but it's not urgent, just press and hold the 1 button and it'll call me directly. If it is urgent, call my name like you're trying to get my attention and I'll come to your location immediately. [He can have his phone back, by the way.] We'll introduce you to texting and the like tomorrow.

[Don't mind Kuwabara as he leans over your shoulder, Kurama. He just wants to see what you're doing so he can try it out for himself, later.] That girl with the flower crown is pretty cute, is she your girlfriend?

Texting? Aw man, that means i gotta practice my spelling, doesn't it?

[Really, it wouldn't be Kuwabara if he wasn't getting all up in Kurama's personal space.]

He is a friend who runs a tailoring business for denizens of the Far Shore. [So don't go pulling a Gojyo, k?] And practicing your spelling isn't required, but it'll make things easier for you in the long run.

[Kurama pauses a moment, trying to think of what else he absolutely needs to tell Kuwabara tonight before unleashing him on the world (and, more importantly, what of that is safe to tell him). Oh!] In the unlikely event I can't come find you when all this is over, call Tajimamori or Euterpe and ask them to take you to my temple. They're in your phone's contacts [along with everyone else] and are also friends of mine who'll make sure you can get home safe.

[He thinks that's it, so the floor is once again open to questions.]

[Welp, he sure feels like a heel now. At least he made the mistake with Kurama, and not in front of Forrest, because he probably would have tried flirting with him, all things considered] Oh-! Uh, well... he's very pretty?

[...yeah...]

[Ahem, A N Y W A Y]

Tajimamori and Euterpe if you can't find me, or I can't find you, got it.

So um. What should we be doing, Kurama? Are we looking for demons now, or what, because I can tell you, there's something pretty nasty going on around here somewhere and it's giving me the willies.

[Hence the timely correction! It sure is a good thing Kuwabara has such a smart friend.

And his spirit sense, apparently, which should make things a hell of a lot easier.]

We have two primary goals: to stop the living from accidentally hurting themselves and each other, and to track down the source of their despondency to put a stop to it. A demon likely is involved, but it or whoever's helping it may employee ayakashi as well, so try to remain alert. I'd hate for you to try to wrestle one and wind up blighted beyond recovery.

[He says this last part dryly, but he means it 100%.]

[He just needs to get used to using his spirit sense again. Maybe this time around, he'll even pay attention to it!]

[He opens his mouth to protest that he wouldn't wrestle an ayakashi, he's already been warned about the blight, but he stops himself]

[He probably would wrestle an ayakashi, all things considered]

[Ahem]

So keep people from hurting themselves and track down the demon responsible, got it.

[As he talks, someone walks past them, slowly drifting towards the street. Kuwabara turns around, takes them by the shoulders, and gently guides them back onto the sidewalk]

Yanno, I kinda get the feeling that trying to do one thing's gonna make doing the other pretty tough.

[Yeah, that's right Kuwabara, listen to your god.

He's not wrong about the difficulty of their situation, however, and Kurama's glad to see he's already on top of at least one objective.]

That's usually the point of distractions, I'm afraid, but we must do what we can. Now, one more time: [And suddenly he's maximum business.] How do you get a hold of me and who do you contact if that doesn't work?

I get a hold of you by holding down the 1 button on my phone, or by shouting your name really loud like I'm trying to get your attention. [he deadpans, stuffing his hands into his pockets and rolling his eyes. Like he's going to forget all this that easily.] If I can't contact you, I'm supposed to call Euterpe or Tajimasomethin-or-other. Whatever, it's already in my phone, so I'm sure I'll be able to figure it out when I need to.

[Kuwabara can roll his eyes all he wants; Kurama's not sending his friend and shinki out into this mess unprepared. He gets a pass only because the answer is sufficient.]

Very good. Hopefully that and muscle memory will be enough to get you through the night.

[Across the street, someone yells, "Watch where you're going, buddy!" Kurama looks over and sees another of their wannabe zombies catching hell.] Ah, looks like that's my cue. Try not to die again before I've had a chance to show you around the pyramid! [And then he's off to rescue a living person. You got this, Kuwabara.]
