009 | Where Your Demons Hide
Who: Everyone!
What: Emergency demon fighting
When: Late May 5-Early May 6
Where: Just outside of Tokyo
Summary: The demon from the school has reared its ugly head again and needs to be taken down.

On the evening of May 5, the Heavens suddenly receive an influx of prayers from people in and around a certain town just outside of Tokyo. There seem to be a lot of people in the area that have suddenly stopped responding normally (or at all). The situation continues to spread as the night goes on until not only is the whole town suffering from this malady, but the neighboring towns are starting to become affected as well.
With so many gods and shinki on hand - including new ones that have just appeared - the Heavens have issued a request for any available gods and shinki to go investigate what might be happening down on the Near Shore. New gods and shinki will be given the low-down on what's happening, but not much more than that.
The situation will continue to expand until just a little before dawn, when the demon finally has enough power to revive.

Drained Humans
Many humans in the affected areas are walking around despondently. Oftentimes, they are just walking into things or getting hit by things. There have been a few car-related incidents as well. Anyone who was present for the high school incident will recognize these symptoms as something that was happening to people in the school. The glazed looks, the spiritless responses and reactions. So this should be fairly familiar to some.
No One's Safe
Unfortunately, being in the town will start to wear on anyone who is there. Gods and shinki alike will find themselves growing more despondent the longer they spend in the town. All of their energy will be slowly sapped from their bodies, and shinki in particular will feel almost like their existence is draining away.
Hellish Circle
There is a large park in the center of the town. Drawn all around this park is a magic circle, large enough to encompass the whole park. There are candles around the edges of the circle, and in the center there is a cup filled with blood covered by a mask with a swirling eye pattern on it. Stepping into this circle will not only make you extremely tired and suddenly drained, but it will also bring bat-like ayakashi bearing down on you.
The Demon
The Demon itself rears its ugly head just a little before dawn, springing out from the center of the magic circle and looking right pleased with itself. It stands about 5'8" tall, so it is largely unimposing, but there is an aura about it that makes it undeniable that it is powerful. The demon will gladly fight anyone who comes at it, though most he will just shove out of the way without a second thought.

- Help the drained people
- Try not to get drained yourself
- Be careful about being corrupted
- Fight the demon
- Have fun~

[A moment after the call, a borderline springs to life right behind Yamanami. It's not the most precise thing, because Souji hasn't had all the time in the world to practice, but it will be enough to hold the bat ayakashi off for a moment.
The slight figure some distance before Yamanami is wearing more modern clothes, striped leggings and an oversized jumper in pastels, with with cute hair clips holding his hair back, but otherwise he looks pretty much the same as remembered. The way sickness marked his body later in life hasn't affected how he looks in death. And he has absolutely no idea that he might not be the most comforting person to see at this moment, gesturing hurriedly for Yamanami to come closer before his borderline breaks.]
no subject
There is no scar on his side and his neck, but an uncomfortable twinge flares up where the sword had cut and severed the flesh. There's the tight, compressed vice around his heart, grief and guilt entwining within and squeezing hard enough that he can barely choke out a name.]
O-...Okita-kun?
[Why is he here? Why is he asking for Yamanami to go to him, behind the wall of light that the ayakashi can't seem to go through? Why is Okita Souji trying to help him, after everything Yamanami's done to him? And before he can stop this train of awful thoughts, it rams straight into the most awful question of all.
If Yamanami is here, and Okita as well...then is Okita dead?
It doesn't occur to Yamanami at that point that Okita might not be a god like he is. The words burst out of him before he can even control himself.] Okita-kun, I'm sor--
[A sharp screech thankfully stops him right then, and Yamanami just manages to duck out of the way of a swooping bat. The old man on his back has gone completely listless, hands and legs hanging limp and heavy, and he's reminded that right now there's one person else in this scenario. Ashamed that he'd almost completely forgotten about the old man's safety, Yamanami swallows and dashes forward towards the barrier, bats on his tail. But he just about makes it, crossing over just as a bat had been a hair's breadth from snapping and securing its jaws around the human he's carrying. For its troubles, it gets a mouthful of sharp, repelling borderline power and it bounces painfully off the barrier, wings all wildly flailing and beating about before it successfully hoists itself back up in the air.
Yamanami breaths. He's breathing harder than he should be, it's not too tiring for him to cart the old man around. But he can't exactly face Okita right now, and now that the shock of seeing Okita has blunted somewhat, he realises that he could have made a terrible, terrible mistake earlier. He needs a moment to compose himself, and he gains that moment by checking the old man for any wounds.<]
i'm so sorry /face in hands
Too bad his phone is out of power.
He glances at the stranger helping the old man out, frowning as his rather weird reaction slowly dawns on him. Stranger? Yes, definitely, but he'd known his name, and that look on his face-
That look had almost felt... scary somehow. Like something he didn't want to see. Like something that could be bad.
The sensation is as inexplicable as his irrational fear of getting sick, just a gut reaction without any experience or memory to tie it to. Like he had before, he tries to ignore it, because he's sure nothing good could come from thinking about it more.
Still, the name thing is strange, but has at least one possible solution. So he crouches down next to the other man, still keeping an eye on the trapped ayakashi as he smiles at him.]
Hello. I don't think I know you, but... are you a friend of Hijikata-sama? Did he tell you about me?
no subject
Now that he's ascertained that the old man is unharmed, Yamanami arranges the man to carefully lie down on the bench before he turns around to reply. There's something just incredibly sincere about that friendly, apologetic smile that he's wearing...that it might almost seem fake.]
Ah, I'm sorry. I mistook you for someone else. [It's amazing how easy lies can fall out of his mouth...and it's sickening him to the core. It's one pretence after another, a growing stack of lies and deceit. But this placid expression is just so easy to wear, the muscles pulling a smile that looks incredibly genuine in all its awkwardness, hiding all the turmoil within.]
I should stop reading so much at night, I think my eye sight might really be going. I'm truly sorry for troubling you.
[A small bow is offered, one stranger to another. He's got to keep up this act, just long enough so that he can leave and never look back. The cowardly truth is that he's not ready to face Okita. He's definitely not ready to face Hijikata either, and he's careful to avoid making any statement about whether he even knows a Hijikata or not.
But Hijikata-sama. That's what Souji said, didn't he? What terrible odds are these? Of course it could be a different Hijikata...but fate probably isn't so kind. If Yamanami is free to show his true feelings, he might've let off a bitter chuckle. It doesn't matter what time they're in, it doesn't even matter that they're no longer human. Even now, Souji is tied to Hijikata. Even now, Souji follows his orders, obeys his will. Dully he wonders if Souji still kills, if he still loses himself to that bloodlust within.
If Yamanami's final act had all been for nothing, and Hijikata still used Okita as a blade to strike down those who opposed him ruthlessly till death took the two of them.
All these thoughts run through his mind, and they seethe under his skin like a raging ocean. But on the surface he is calm. Straightening up, he bends down to pick up and carry the old man. ] Well, I had better bring him somewhere safe. [He doesn't want to look at Okita. He can't look at Okita. His eyes are going to betray him if he looks too long.]
no subject
But... that is my name? [He tilts his head in confusion.] Okita Souji. Or, well, one of my names.
[He holds up his left hand with a smile, where the shinki tattoo is emblazoned in red as deep as fresh blood. Another obvious clue that yes, it is in fact Hijikata who gave him that name, because what a coincidence otherwise that Souji should be named after ume of all things. A kigo for spring, a protective charm against evil... or a symbol for something which blossoms early and then fades.
He watches Yamanami pick up the old man, biting his lip with a small frown, and he's about to offer to help when he feels the borderline behind him snap.
He doesn't really have time to shout a warning, or to put up another borderline, so instead he simply grabs the god's clothes and attempts to shove him out of the way, hoping he'll budge in time for him to get out of the way as well.]
You can't touch them- [A warning hissed out mid-shove, because he hasn't seen Yamanami before and there seems to be a lot of new people running about.] -and we can't kill them like this.
no subject
Blood. There was so much of it on his body, streams of it being pumped out of his body with every traitorous beat of his heart, sent trickling down Okita's blade to puddle near his feet. For a second his breath arrests in his throat but the lies are thick on his tongue, lies formed and spilling from a serpent's smiling mouth.]
Isn't that quite a coincidence? But I'm afraid you aren't the Okita I'm familiar with. Really, it's my mistake--
[It's probably wrong for him to be relieved when the borderline snaps, replacing one awful tension with another that's...well to be frank, being attacked by negative spirits is no walk in the park. But he'd rather face a physical demon than the ones in his mind.
Okita's push helped him to stay out of harm's way and protect the human, but more and more ayakashi are converging on them, screeching and swooping down on them. Yamanami might be able to flee...but what about Okita? Could he guarantee Okita's safety? He can't just abandon his friend to face all these ayakashi on his own. He can't leave Okita again.
Yamanami takes a deep breath and quickly, calmly calls out:] Okita-san! [Okita-san it has to be Okita-san, that's what strangers call each other] Can you keep them at bay one more time? I have a-- an ability that can help shake these creatures off our tail.
[He can still recall the tingle that had surged to his finger tips when in an earlier moment of desperation to rescue some humans, he'd accidentally tapped onto something within him, something that came with this new title and position as a divine being. A power to see the future, to make the correct choices to escape. He only hopes that he can summon that power consciously, and that the last time hadn't just been some random fluke.]
no subject
His pure and utterly amoral pragmatism runs up against this very fundamental part of his being. It would be easier to deal with these things if they could be Rent. This man seems kind, he could probably trust him to take the intruding name back and not abuse it... but Souji would still know. The mark would still be there, underneath his skin.
He cuts the thought short there, because he's pretty sure he's actually going to blight Hijikata just thinking about it, and what purpose does that serve? He assigns the idea to "last resorts", and still hates himself a bit for doing even that.
Kicking aside an ayakashi that got too close, glad he's not in sandals right now, he nods in response to Yamanami.]
I'll try.
[Placing himself in between the God and the largest concentration of ayakashi, he draws a curved borderline on the ground in front of him, breathing out a quiet sigh as it blazes with light.]
Quickly. I'm not sure how long I can do this.
