009 | Where Your Demons Hide

Who: Everyone!
What: Emergency demon fighting
When: Late May 5-Early May 6
Where: Just outside of Tokyo
Summary: The demon from the school has reared its ugly head again and needs to be taken down.

On the evening of May 5, the Heavens suddenly receive an influx of prayers from people in and around a certain town just outside of Tokyo. There seem to be a lot of people in the area that have suddenly stopped responding normally (or at all). The situation continues to spread as the night goes on until not only is the whole town suffering from this malady, but the neighboring towns are starting to become affected as well.

With so many gods and shinki on hand - including new ones that have just appeared - the Heavens have issued a request for any available gods and shinki to go investigate what might be happening down on the Near Shore. New gods and shinki will be given the low-down on what's happening, but not much more than that.

The situation will continue to expand until just a little before dawn, when the demon finally has enough power to revive.

Drained Humans

Many humans in the affected areas are walking around despondently. Oftentimes, they are just walking into things or getting hit by things. There have been a few car-related incidents as well. Anyone who was present for the high school incident will recognize these symptoms as something that was happening to people in the school. The glazed looks, the spiritless responses and reactions. So this should be fairly familiar to some.

No One's Safe

Unfortunately, being in the town will start to wear on anyone who is there. Gods and shinki alike will find themselves growing more despondent the longer they spend in the town. All of their energy will be slowly sapped from their bodies, and shinki in particular will feel almost like their existence is draining away.

Hellish Circle

There is a large park in the center of the town. Drawn all around this park is a magic circle, large enough to encompass the whole park. There are candles around the edges of the circle, and in the center there is a cup filled with blood covered by a mask with a swirling eye pattern on it. Stepping into this circle will not only make you extremely tired and suddenly drained, but it will also bring bat-like ayakashi bearing down on you.

The Demon

The Demon itself rears its ugly head just a little before dawn, springing out from the center of the magic circle and looking right pleased with itself. It stands about 5'8" tall, so it is largely unimposing, but there is an aura about it that makes it undeniable that it is powerful. The demon will gladly fight anyone who comes at it, though most he will just shove out of the way without a second thought.

In Summary:
  • Help the drained people
  • Try not to get drained yourself
  • Be careful about being corrupted
  • Fight the demon
  • Have fun~

[Just a moment or two, to catch his breath and gather his scattered thoughts--that's all he intended to take.

He jumps at the sudden jolt to the chair he'd claimed, and thinking back he'd actually lost track of time, that almost never happens.

He glances up at the girl, with her bottle, and her expression puts him on the defensive for just a brief moment before he manages a smile.]

Thank you.

[Not that it isn't understandable that he's tired, in his opinion. He's been chasing his own tail dealing with all these medical emergencies. He might suddenly be a god, but he is only one person.]

[When Ruri replies, her voice is devoid of all feeling or emotion, as if it is simply stating facts as opposed to any hint of concern for the situation or people around her.]

"This place has some form of emotional variance barrier surrounding it. It causes all those inside to suffer from ennui. The native population seem to be the most susceptible, where as the...."

[There is a long pause, the pause of someone who doesn't want to say gods and spirits because it is scientifically stupid, but can't think of a better way of saying it immediately.]

"People who have been brought here to serve as beings of power are more resistant but not immune. If you need to rest, I've hot-wired a car and have a rough guess at to where the effect ends."

[Julian is getting distinct Vulcan vibes off of her, and discreetly checks for pointy ears. Finding none, he continues listening to her explanation.]

And the longer you stay, the worse it gets, I'm presuming.

[He has been here for a while. Still, he's not feeling quite so hopeless as he did when he was a guest of the Dominion, or when he was on Teplan, so he figures he's got some time yet before he becomes, well, an emotional zombie.]

I've been responding to injured people all morning. Honestly, I just needed to sit for a few moments. Thank you, though.

[With that she nods, and her ears are completely human, her eyes seem to almost glow golden but her ears are completely normal.]

"That is what my data points to. I don't have a proper amount of scanning tools to check everyone but using myself as a test case and comparing my own movements to others I find that to be the most feasible."

[She then points to a car a ways off, it isn't so much parked as it has come to stop between some shrubberies and looks a bit worse for wear. Sadly piloting a starship is much different than driving a Honda and no one would help her get a learner's permit.]

"If you want we can probably start ferrying people to a safe distance and let you rest there. If you insist on staying though, it may be best to find a partner to keep from falling into unawareness again. I doubt that whatever is causing this will be as likely to snap you out if it as I was."

[Doesn't necessarily rule out a half-Vulcan, but. She would have recognized the Starfleet uniform he's still wearing in that case.]

If we get them out of the area of effect, they may just panic and try to come right back into it.

[He frowns thoughtfully. Preferably they could get people out of this malaise without causing undue stress.

Then there's the matter of her concern for him. Now that he's aware of the effects, he should be able to keep from succumbing easier. He thinks. There's always an unknown variable.]

There's a few people I've been working with.

"It may be best to find them then. I've been gathering information, but I'm also setting up a schedule to leave town for a bit every few hours and resupply. It may not be the most efficient means but till I have more data I can't do better."

[She then pokes a person who has succumb to the full ennui and tilts her head]

"I'm not sure panic is something that they would feel and I'm guessing that it will take longer than a few moments to come to, but I'm not a doctor of medicine so I can't make that judgement."

[She pauses slightly then bows.]

"Oh. I'm Ruri. Lt. Commander Hoshino Ruri. Captain of the Battleship Nadesico or.... Omoikane... Depending on if you are factual or spiritual."

[A ship captain? She looks so young. Julian had been one of the youngest chief medical officers in Starfleet when he was given his first posting, but he'd still been 27--she looked barely half his age.]

I'd be able to give a better estimate if, as you said, we had better data.

[He offers a friendly, if tired smile.]

Doctor Julian Bashir, Chief Medical Officer of Deep Space Nine. Or Asclepius, I suppose. If, as you said, we're discussing the spiritual.

"Is there a doctor's office around that you could get equipment to look at a person more thoroughly here then?"

[Ruri nods a bit to the smile then looks at the sky]

"I'm not familiar with Deep Space Nine, but there were a lot of Jovian Colonies, or you may be from further on than I am. Still, if you want I can stay with you till you find someone to keep you from falling asleep again."

Not easily portable, I'm afraid. And, it seems that my new peculiar skill is to be able to evaluate any medical causes of distress, and I've not been able to detect anything out of the ordinary. If this is caused by an external force, it isn't something in the realm of the medical.

[He shakes his head at the mention of Jovian colonies. No, DS9 is much further out than that.]

It's not in the Sol system at all. It's near Bajor, which is about 60 light-years from Earth.

[He's guessing different realities entirely--he'd been told that was a possibility. Earth never had any battle ships, not even before the Federation was official.]

I wouldn't want you to throw your schedule off on my account.

"No, I meant in the town. A city doctor that may have files of when people first began to show signs of exhaustion and disconnect. Early data may have things that we are missing, or signs to point out when we have to disengage or succumb completely."

[And really, if Ruri knew of the universe of the Federation as opposed to the one she lived in with corporations rivaling governments and the need of an actual task force to prevent people from designing tech to blow up things to mine them more easily she'd put up with learning all the new geography]

"As for a schedule, I'm mostly making this up as I go along. This is more a mystery than anything else to me."

Ah, fair. I can certainly look into that. See if it corresponds in any way with the...prayers that we've been receiving.

[Apparently, judging from the expression on his face, he doesn't hold that theory in high regard, no matter how true it may be. Humans are largely secular in his timeline and Julian is no exception.]

Well, that makes two of us, then.

[personal profile] hontobakabaka 2016-10-19 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ah yes, prayers."

[She sighs a bit. There is a place she'd like to tell religion to go shove itself. But she doesn't think that given her position it would be right to go and give the "You are all individual people" speech to humanity.]

"I wouldn't be able to make heads or tails out of medical reports and they may have valuable clues. I tend to specialize in physics and computers. But having actual biological data may help explain this in a more rational way than demons."
asklepian: (pic#6889756)

[personal profile] asklepian 2016-10-22 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
[Julian doesn't particularly have anything against it, but he's...well, Human. And despite serving on a space station with the very religious Bajorans, under the man who was their prophesied Emissary, and having seen a literal act of God--well, he just didn't hold to the idea.]

I can certainly do that. A rational explanation would be wonderful.

[If they explain it, he can deal with it.]

Honestly, I should have thought of that. Thank you for the idea.

[personal profile] hontobakabaka 2016-10-22 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"You saw the immediate problem. Most doctors I know can't stand people in pain and get distracted by that which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Still something rational is our best bet for clearing this all up. I think the business district is that way though."

[She points a bit deeper into the city]

"While I don't really know about old Earth cities, I would suspect something may be there."

If only I could be in two places at once. Alas.

[No, it's better, in this case, to figure out what's going on and stop it at the source.

He takes a deep breath, lets it out, and then stands up.]

Well, I'll go see what I can find. Thank you, for the tea and the suggestion.

"Of course. If you need to bypass a data lock out or anything just give me a call."

[She taps her hand a bit and shakes her head]

"I still am not plugged into a larger data grid but I managed to obtain a local com unit."

[She pulls out an ancient looking cel phone, then writes a number on a napkin and offers it]

"It will have to do till I can find something better."
