009 | Where Your Demons Hide

Who: Everyone!
What: Emergency demon fighting
When: Late May 5-Early May 6
Where: Just outside of Tokyo
Summary: The demon from the school has reared its ugly head again and needs to be taken down.

On the evening of May 5, the Heavens suddenly receive an influx of prayers from people in and around a certain town just outside of Tokyo. There seem to be a lot of people in the area that have suddenly stopped responding normally (or at all). The situation continues to spread as the night goes on until not only is the whole town suffering from this malady, but the neighboring towns are starting to become affected as well.

With so many gods and shinki on hand - including new ones that have just appeared - the Heavens have issued a request for any available gods and shinki to go investigate what might be happening down on the Near Shore. New gods and shinki will be given the low-down on what's happening, but not much more than that.

The situation will continue to expand until just a little before dawn, when the demon finally has enough power to revive.

Drained Humans

Many humans in the affected areas are walking around despondently. Oftentimes, they are just walking into things or getting hit by things. There have been a few car-related incidents as well. Anyone who was present for the high school incident will recognize these symptoms as something that was happening to people in the school. The glazed looks, the spiritless responses and reactions. So this should be fairly familiar to some.

No One's Safe

Unfortunately, being in the town will start to wear on anyone who is there. Gods and shinki alike will find themselves growing more despondent the longer they spend in the town. All of their energy will be slowly sapped from their bodies, and shinki in particular will feel almost like their existence is draining away.

Hellish Circle

There is a large park in the center of the town. Drawn all around this park is a magic circle, large enough to encompass the whole park. There are candles around the edges of the circle, and in the center there is a cup filled with blood covered by a mask with a swirling eye pattern on it. Stepping into this circle will not only make you extremely tired and suddenly drained, but it will also bring bat-like ayakashi bearing down on you.

The Demon

The Demon itself rears its ugly head just a little before dawn, springing out from the center of the magic circle and looking right pleased with itself. It stands about 5'8" tall, so it is largely unimposing, but there is an aura about it that makes it undeniable that it is powerful. The demon will gladly fight anyone who comes at it, though most he will just shove out of the way without a second thought.

In Summary:
  • Help the drained people
  • Try not to get drained yourself
  • Be careful about being corrupted
  • Fight the demon
  • Have fun~

[ No sooner does he get the girl clear, depositing her a short distance away, than he hazards a glance back toward the circle.

He'd made a promise, and he's not about to break it. She'd fought to defend a kid she didn't know, had risked her own life for someone who probably wouldn't have been able to see her anyway, and all she'd been concerned with was that kid's safety. She'd kept her end of the deal, protecting them while he'd escaped with the girl... so he'll keep his.

After double checking to be certain the girl is alright, Hijikata turns around and heads back toward the circle. Even if she deems it unnecessary to make use of him, he's going to make sure she gets out of there. ]

[It's been a long time since Yoruichi has felt so alarmingly exhausted. But it's been even longer than that since she'd given up in a fight.

She's not going to die here. Kisuke, Zangetsu, Amane--they're all depending on her.

The guy from earlier (she really needs to get his name) appears from the trees, obviously intending on coming back despite having reached safety. If she had the energy she'd have laughed at his stubborn heroism, but all she can do is reach out a hand as he reaches her side.

Yoruichi doesn't like the shinki system. People have no say in who they serve, or even whether they serve at all. But they're in battle, and he'd volunteered knowing all that.

She resolves to release him as soon as this is all over. But for now, she looks him in the eye, her grip firm on his forearm. Her strength is failing. But maybe combining it with his will get them out of this.]

I name you--Metsuki.

[She doesn't know anything about him, other than his willingness to protect others. But she'd already used 'protect' for her student, so he'll just have to make do with 'destroy'--because if she has any say, they'll wipe every single ayakashi here out of existence.]

[ If she'd thought he would turn and run-- well, she doesn't actually know him at all, so it's understandable, but backing down and running away are two things he will not do. It's just not in his nature.

He doesn't know how this works, as he reaches her side, nor does he care; this is a debt owed, and he intends to pay it in full. She can't keep this up on her own, and he isn't even sure that offering himself up will help, but they won't know unless they try.

It's an odd feeling, a spirit warping and changing shape to suit, and the name given is strangely appropriate, not that he'd understand why. He'd promised to bring her out of this, their arrangement purely temporary, but as his form settles, even that thought is brushed aside.

The ayakashi may have started things, but it's the last thing they'll ever do. ]

[ As the name settles on him, transforming him into a set of--well, they're more or less claws--settling over the gauntlet form of her soulless shinki. But it escapes her notice for the first few moments as the moment of his death flashes before her eyes. A proud man, defending the honor of the unit in which he served. Transforming himself for the power to avenge them, only to fall anyway.

Yoruichi shakes off the lingering melancholy, focusing on the fight ahead. These things are a little unwieldy, but she'll manage. ]

All right, let's get this done.

[Ignoring the fatigue burning her muscles, Yoruichi shoots forward, slashing at the first ayakashi to attack. The little creatures seem taken aback at the way she's rallied, so she's not going to waste the element of surprise.

Exhaling, she launches into shunpo, flashing back and forth across the area quickly enough to take them off guard. They have no idea where she'll appear next, and so they fall, unable to escape each devastating slice of her hands.]

[ It's actually kind of exhilarating, cutting down ayakashi like this, her speed and the element of surprise it creates adding to the effect. This is his first taste of combat here... but there isn't a shred of fear to hold him back. However, there was a reason he allowed this, and he wants to make sure she doesn't forget it. ]

If there isn't an end to them, get the hell out.

[ He's not stupid, as much as he's enjoying this, there's only so much they can take before the circle wears them down. Besides, it's not a loss because the mission was one of rescue. ]

Regroup, observe their movements, then take them out at the source.

[Yoruichi kicks one ayakashi away; it hits a nearby tree hard enough to crack the bark.]

I've done this a time or two before, you know. [Her voice is drily amused.] I'm not interested in being a martyr.

[As proud as she is, Yoruichi's also practical. She has no problem falling back if the situation calls for it. Dying in battle is one thing, but dying stupidly and needlessly is something to be avoided.

The ayakashi are starting to thin, the still living ones frightened off by the sudden ferocity of the attack. It's just enough to open a path to escape, so Yoruichi spins, darting for the edge of the circle.

A larger ayakashi lumbers into their path; without slowing, Yoruichi draws back her arm, slashing it across the throat. Leaping over its crumpled form, she stumbles across the edge of the circle, gulping in air as the attacks finally cease.

She can hear them hissing and swarming behind her, but for now at least, they're not coming any further.]
