009 | Where Your Demons Hide

Who: Everyone!
What: Emergency demon fighting
When: Late May 5-Early May 6
Where: Just outside of Tokyo
Summary: The demon from the school has reared its ugly head again and needs to be taken down.

On the evening of May 5, the Heavens suddenly receive an influx of prayers from people in and around a certain town just outside of Tokyo. There seem to be a lot of people in the area that have suddenly stopped responding normally (or at all). The situation continues to spread as the night goes on until not only is the whole town suffering from this malady, but the neighboring towns are starting to become affected as well.

With so many gods and shinki on hand - including new ones that have just appeared - the Heavens have issued a request for any available gods and shinki to go investigate what might be happening down on the Near Shore. New gods and shinki will be given the low-down on what's happening, but not much more than that.

The situation will continue to expand until just a little before dawn, when the demon finally has enough power to revive.

Drained Humans

Many humans in the affected areas are walking around despondently. Oftentimes, they are just walking into things or getting hit by things. There have been a few car-related incidents as well. Anyone who was present for the high school incident will recognize these symptoms as something that was happening to people in the school. The glazed looks, the spiritless responses and reactions. So this should be fairly familiar to some.

No One's Safe

Unfortunately, being in the town will start to wear on anyone who is there. Gods and shinki alike will find themselves growing more despondent the longer they spend in the town. All of their energy will be slowly sapped from their bodies, and shinki in particular will feel almost like their existence is draining away.

Hellish Circle

There is a large park in the center of the town. Drawn all around this park is a magic circle, large enough to encompass the whole park. There are candles around the edges of the circle, and in the center there is a cup filled with blood covered by a mask with a swirling eye pattern on it. Stepping into this circle will not only make you extremely tired and suddenly drained, but it will also bring bat-like ayakashi bearing down on you.

The Demon

The Demon itself rears its ugly head just a little before dawn, springing out from the center of the magic circle and looking right pleased with itself. It stands about 5'8" tall, so it is largely unimposing, but there is an aura about it that makes it undeniable that it is powerful. The demon will gladly fight anyone who comes at it, though most he will just shove out of the way without a second thought.

In Summary:
  • Help the drained people
  • Try not to get drained yourself
  • Be careful about being corrupted
  • Fight the demon
  • Have fun~

[Because nothing can be easy. Damn it all to hell.]

No, I don't have nearly the patience for that lifestyle. [He runs a hand through his hair, and ... there's no easy way to do this, is there?

...a second look, though, and Sakura isn't... quite so Sakura. The Sakura he remembered was pure nerve. She wouldn't be quite so hesitant... and her hair wasn't quite that dark...

Well, if it was Aya's sister, of course she wouldn't recognize him. Ouka should, by voice, even if he's not aged particularly well. Either or both of them could be shinki.]

I'm going to wild guess you have no idea where you are and how you got here, is that correct? I have a slight idea, and I-- [he glances between them, because why the hell was it him, and not, say, Omi] believe we might have a mutual friend. [There, that was safe. A bit. If they were both shinki, it was no good-- Ouka definitely was, but if Aya was a god...]

If you can tell me what you were doing before you got here, I might be able to figure it out. I might have mistaken you for someone else, but I want to be sure, because my friend isn't here to explain things himself if you are who I'm thinking of.

If you aren't, well... we're in a common predicament, and I still might be able to offer some insight as to why you're here-- much as I doubt you'll believe me.

[If they declined to confirm, or-- Youji didn't know what to do, honestly. Leave them here and send Omi, perhaps, or Trance, as soon as possible.]

I know I'm one more frightening thing on top of a very frightening day, and believe me, I've been frightened some, too, today. I'm wondering if you're gods or shinki, who should be newly arrived to the Far Shore, but were drafted for this idiocy instead.

[ On one hand, they're incredibly lucky to run into such a helpful stranger!

On the other hand... everything he's saying sounds vaguely skeevy, considering his age. And he's being awfully... indirect. Mutual friend? If they could tell him what they were doing? Why does his information come with such strings attached?

Her eyes narrow slightly. ]

What mutual friend?

[ Not that she'd know, since... well... she can't remember anything worth anything at all. But maybe... maybe if he says a name she recognizes, it'll jog a memory.

... Though, that thought isn't very reassuring. Somehow, it gives her a horrible feeling in the pit of her stomach. Like she'd rather not know.

But maybe Aya would recognize the name. Which would mean... that they had a closer connection than she'd initially thought. ]

Stop being so shady. You tell us what you know first.

[Shady?! Apparently, at some point, Ouka Sakaki traded her common sense for her memories. Or vice-versa.]

My friend is Ran.

[and he needs those first three words to actually recall it, but it works and he answers smoothly.

Also, please notice he was careful to fudge the relationship. He called Ran a "mutual friend," did not say he was Aya's brother. He will not be turning her into an ayakashi, if she is a shinki.

Nor Ouka. Ran was not her friend, nor was that the name she'd know him by. He deserves credit for thinking this out, okay?]

If that name means anything to you, then congratulations, you're a god now. If it doesn't, it's not important, but I think you must be the shinki partnered to some god. A lot of people are winding up as gods and the shinki serving them, apparently. I'm one of them. I came this way because I heard a woman screaming, and there's a fair few things worth screaming over, I understand. And I was shocked by some level of recognition. I'd rather not leave you two alone here, but if you'd prefer, I can send someone else this way.

Ran?

[Ran. Her brother.

[Her stupid, overprotective, wonderful brother. Ran, who she last saw, last saw for real, that was - Aya doesn't want to think about it. He called her name, she knows he did that much. He... he was with Ouka, when all that happened, though he - there was something not-quite-right about it, about him, above and beyond what had happened to the girl by her side. He was all right. He had to be all right, if this man knew him... but why, oh why, would Ran have known someone like this?

[There's nothing wrong with the stranger, not really. Sure, he's being kind of weird and Aya isn't rightly sure she trusts him, whatever he says about knowing her brother, but there's nothing actively wrong. He's just... well, where would Ran have met him? He's just... well, he's so old!]

How do you know Ran? Is he here?

We're coworkers. He isn't here, I wish he was [in this exact moment, mostly], but I think I saw you two together once.

[For the first and only time, he's glad for Kritiker's insistence on cover jobs. Ready explanations at the ready.]

I know you're both in a terrifying position. And I'm not being particularly helpful in some ways, but I can't entirely help that myself. This is a strange and terrifying world we've all been thrown into.

Normally, you'd be in your temple, and have things explained to you there. Much better than I can.

[ There's that name again. Someone important to Aya, obviously. But apparently he is not here.

Is not dead? If so, maybe it's good that he's not here.

She glances at the stranger, and then back at Aya. For once, Ouka decides to keep quiet. Allow Aya to process the information, first. ]
somebodysdaughter: (well bunnies)

[personal profile] somebodysdaughter 2016-11-05 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Temple?

[Or, on the other hand, maybe he's a crazy person.

[The thought isn't a comforting one, and Aya draws closer to Ouka. If she hadn't just met her - if this had been Suzume or Madoka or someone like that, if the girl had been one of her friends, or someone she knew from school - she would have reached for Ouka's hand. Not that it would have changed anything. It would just have made her feel a little safer, a little less totally alone. Safety in numbers, right?]

Um. So, well, you work at the restaurant or something? But Ran never... I mean, he didn't--

[Aya hesitates, but there's no good way to say it. She's just going to have to be blunt. There are lots of ways this man could know her brother, and they don't all make him someone she can trust.]

All his friends were... his age. Even if you know him, I don't think he'd like you talking to me.

slantedcross: (shut up aya)

[personal profile] slantedcross 2016-11-07 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
No, he definitely wouldn't-- but that's more my personality. Or his. One of the two.

[While the idea of Aya having a part-time job is so fucking normal it burns, Youji does not have the patience or the time to be distracted by it. It's not even worth teasing him, if he were here.]

Another friend of mine and your brother's is here, but much younger than when I knew him. It might be related. I'm only a couple of years older than him in reality. I know him as an adult.

...you are more than welcome to protest the insanity of this. I'll wait. It's an excellent stress reliever, albeit a temporary one.
savemeomi: (demanding)

[personal profile] savemeomi 2016-11-07 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Okay, so he knows her brother.

Er. Except.

Say what? ]

Huh?

[ Please repeat that last bit, because it makes no sense. ]

So you're saying. People's ages randomly change when they get here? Are you serious? Do you have any proof?
slantedcross: (gentle face)

[personal profile] slantedcross 2016-11-10 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
No, none. I can try appealing to others who can back up my assertion, but that doesn't preclude mass delusion, does it?

[Brutally honest here. He can do that, although he keeps his tone measured and even.]
somebodysdaughter: (oh no a sad panda)

[personal profile] somebodysdaughter 2016-11-11 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't make any sense.

[And that's, well...

[Well. That's exactly why she's inclined to believe it. Nothing else about this situation makes sense, and even if it did absolutely nobody would try and convince an absolute stranger of it unless they were completely insane. Either this man is entirely insane - and if he is, then so is she: what else did you call a girl who heard voices telling her she was a God? - or the situation is.

[She turns to Ouka. She worries at her lip. She doesn't relish telling her clearly far-more-sensible companion all this, but somebody has to.]

I - this is going to sound crazy, but I think we should at least hear him out. I mean, we don't have anything else to go on. Not really.
savemeomi: (you listen here)

[personal profile] savemeomi 2016-11-14 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[ It really doesn't make any sense. Then again, she's here, she's... dead...? but she's not entirely sure, because she can't remember anything.

So is she really in any place to talk about making sense...? ]

Okay... I suppose we can hear him out.

[ BUT JUST IN CASE YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE GONNA GET OFF EASY, MISTER... ]

But don't try anything sneaky, old man! We're not going anywhere weird with you.
slantedcross: (adorably)

[personal profile] slantedcross 2016-11-17 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
[Hands up, where you can see them.]

I can take you somewhere to wait. If you're a god, you should have your own temple residence, and I'm more than willing to help you find it.

If you don't, I can give over mine. I've explained it as I know it to be. They want us here because something's affecting all these people. We're supposed to be trying to stop it, or at least mitigate it.
