You'll be assigned to one first, which is more like the Heavens forcing you onto each other. If your god is decent and you don't work well together anyway or something else happens, you can ask them to release you and search for another god to take you in. Others might force you to stay in their service.

[There's a touch of disgust in his tone at that, but he's heard of it happening before and he'd suspected there'd be gods like that from the very start, so it was never a surprise to him.]

One or two of the older gods are decent as well, but it's still a minority.
