010 | Relief and Rescue

Who: Everyone!
What: Cleanup and moral support
When: All day May 16
Where: Just outside of Tokyo
Summary: It's time to get rid of the mess that that demon made!

The attack by the demon recently has left the surrounding area in a very sorry state. Not only are some people still hospitalized or slowly recovering from the affects of the draining of their life force, but a lot of nasty accidents happened during the time that people were walking around like they were dead to the world. It's been attributed to an odd natural disaster, and many think it may have been an illness that caused it.

The Heavens have decided to send any available gods and shinki down to help out in the relief efforts. If they try hard enough, they should be easily seen for the times when they are helping people out, so it shouldn't be a problem.

On top of that, some new arrivals have suddenly appeared. Amaterasu has left them little handwritten notes pinned to their shirts:

'These people need your help! I'm sorry to throw you into things like this, but please do what you can.

☼ Amaterasu ☼'

And yes, she has doodled little suns next to her name.

Care

There are a lot of people who were left hurt because of the incident with the demon and they are still trying to recover from it. From broken bones all the way to mental trauma, these people have seen a lot of crazy stuff and they aren't feeling so hot. Any kind of care is viable, but you might also want to just be an errand-runner in order to help the qualified people who are already doing a pretty good job of helping these poor folks out.

Food

A fair number of homes and stores managed to get destroyed amidst everything going on with the demon, so there's a lot of work for the neighborhood to do in helping them out. Whether by helping to rebuild what has been broken or by just handing out some free food to the people who need it. Of course, you might also take some food for yourself. Hopefully you're not a horrible enough person to just steal from the homeless~

Literal Cleaning

And here's where the fun comes in. The buildings that need to be rebuilt and the streets that need to be cleaned up are all under works and you can help in any way you deem worthy. You might carry loads or actually put forth the effort to help rebuild some lost homes, it's up to you. Of course, if you set about helping out in this way, you might notice little fairy-like spirits flitting around each of the Near Shore residents who are working hard to help each other out. The little spirits shine brightly and seem to shy away if approached, but they titter happily anytime the person they're following does something nice.

Banquet

After the day is done, the Heavens have a special treat set up for anyone who helped out - a large banquet in the Meeting Hall back on the Far Shore. Just like any other banquet, there is food and booze of every kind available. But also, the small tittering bright white spirits are in attendance, following around any Far Shore resident who helped out today. You might find yourself with a new friend or two who won't leave you alone, who keep giggling anytime you're kind, and who don't seem to be able to talk and only exude delight and good feelings.

In Summary:
  • Help out the people affected by the demon
  • Give out food to people who need it
  • Clean up the messes
  • Eat some good food, drink some good booze
  • Have fun~

[Good, he's not going to have to all but bully her into sitting down and taking a break. His posture relaxes slightly when she sits, and he takes another little sip of his drink.]

It's not bad. [Which is praise, from him.] Everyone worked hard today, they could use something like this.

[He is happy about all the work that got done, even if big parties aren't honestly very much his thing.]

[She assumes he also worked hard, though she can't really imagine him doing the healing portion--

Though, really if she thinks about it, she can see him being surprisingly gentle, like he was with that duckling way back when. Jennifer continues to study and watches him, her mind straying from one thought to the next. Souji was fiercely loyal to him, had told her that Hijikata cared for her in his own way. Her hand goes to the pocket of her dress and slips inside to retrieve the handkerchief he'd given her before and she clutches it in both hand, rubbing the pads of her thumbs against it.

She's content to sit in comfortable silence with him, but after a moment she holds the handkerchief out
] I washed it, but I didn't have a good opportunity to return it to you... Thank you for caring for me and looking out for me. [She blushes, embarrassed.] If there's anything I can do to help you out, please let me know. I spoke with Mr. Souji, but... I wanted you to know you could ask me for anything too.

[Hijikata looks a little surprised to see the handkerchief again -- he'd nearly forgotten about it, truth be told, and hadn't really expected to get it back in the first place.]

[After a brief moment, he reaches out to take it from her hands, tucking it into the pocket of his sharply-tailored waistcoat.]

It's fine. I don't mind keeping an eye out for you, and neither does Souji. You're always welcome at our shrine if you need anything.

[He softens a little, thinking of Souji, and gives a thoughtful little tilt of his head.]

What did you and Souji talk about?
theunluckygirl: (Once we are both dead.)

[personal profile] theunluckygirl 2016-11-25 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[She sort of wishes she had the handkerchief back now given the way her eyes burn a little with the threat of tears. Hijikata and Souji are really too kind, she thinks, and she just nods mutely in understanding.] I...I want to see the ducks...

[Which seems like a silly excuse, but for her she needs some kind of excuse and the ducks provide a good one.

His question makes her hesitate, and for a moment she contemplates lying or hedging around an answer, but after a moment she just sort of smiles sheepishly
] You, actually. Nothing bad, of course! [She continues quickly] It was all good things, I... just wanted to know more about you, and Mr. Souji spoke highly of you. [Jennifer smiles gently] He cares for you deeply, I feel...

[That... shouldn't come as a surprise, really. He smiles -- just a little, just for a second, but it's warm and genuine all the same.]

Souji's always good to me. He's very devoted.

[There's a quiet gratefulness in his voice, and no pride, no sense that he did anything to deserve that devotion. (Even after all these years, it's hard for Hijikata to imagine he deserves it one damn bit.)]
theunluckygirl: (You left your window open again)

[personal profile] theunluckygirl 2016-11-26 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
You're both very lucky. If anyone deserves a shinki like him, it would be you, Mr. Hijikata.

[She says that with the utmost belief in her words] He's devoted to you, but you're devoted to him too, aren't you? I think it's wonderful.
koukai_kirai: (It's death or victory)

[Hijikata shakes his head, waving a hand loosely in front of his face as though to waft the praise away.]

When someone devotes themselves to your service, it's your responsibility to look after them well as their leader. That's true for any kind of superiors, not just for gods.

[Which... is why he hasn't approved much of the way Jennifer's been treated so far. To be someone's leader is a duty to them, and she's been failed in that duty, and it isn't right.]

theunluckygirl: Your sofas are white too. (The clouds are so white)

[personal profile] theunluckygirl 2016-11-27 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[Jennifer is quiet for a moment, tapping her fingertips together]

I think... Not many people might share that way of looking at it... [Or maybe they do and Jennifer has just been led to believe it's in the minority?? Who knows.]

Not that it isn't a better way of looking at it, of course! [She's quick to assure--him? Herself?] Just... [Not realistic, she supposes, but she can't say it out loud. After a moment she sort of smiles and shakes her head] I'd rather believe in what you say anyhow.
koukai_kirai: (On my authority)

[personal profile] koukai_kirai 2016-11-27 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
The leaders who don't recognize it aren't worth what they take from others. They run the risk of the people they take advantage of realizing it, one day.

[If he were them, he'd sleep with one eye open, and not only because of people like him.]

Anyway, just because something isn't easy or popular doesn't mean it's not right. The worth of doing right doesn't rely on what everyone thinks, or even on what anyone thinks. Even if no one else at all thought it was worth doing right by the people who relied on them, it would still be important.

[It's not that he thinks people are better than they are. If anything, he's got a little less faith in humanity as a whole than most people would be able to get by on.]

[But his faith in the inherent worthiness of doing right and honoring his debts? That's completely unshakable.]
theunluckygirl: (Is it the same for you too?)

[personal profile] theunluckygirl 2016-11-29 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
People shouldn't be afraid of their government. Governments should be afraid of their people. It's the same sort of idea, right?

[The more she listens to him the more she wishes she could remember her life, to discuss the things she thought or values she had--but she could barely understand where they came from to begin with. And--]

I wish... [She cuts herself off and stares down at her hands, sighing softly.] You sound like a wonderful god, and a wonderful leader... That kind of conviction can't come from nowhere, after all.
koukai_kirai: (To every enemy)

[personal profile] koukai_kirai 2016-11-30 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Ideally, I'd like to see both of them have respect for each other, but... it's the same sort of thing, yes.

[I wish...]

["I wish" what, exactly? He watches her carefully for a moment, instinctively not liking the way she... held herself back there.]

As for where the conviction came from... When I was human, I saw plenty of powerful people who liked to show off and be respected, but didn't do much worth respecting. Who liked to brag about what they had, when they never used it for anything that was any damn good to anyone but themselves.

[He shrugs, and takes a sip of his drink.]

Never liked those sorts. Always knew I could do their jobs better than them, and spent half my life proving it.

[The irony isn't lost on him -- that as the old government toppled down, one of the last men standing to defend it was an upstart peasant-turned-samurai like him, who'd had to struggle for every scrap of respect the old higher-ups had ever given him.]

[But he stands by what he's always believed -- that power confers a duty to use it well, that accepting something so great as someone's loyalty leaves you in their debt as much as they could ever be in yours. Whatever he's regretted in life, he grew up believing that and believed it to the end, and he doesn't think he's wrong about it now, either.]
