So it was finally time to do some more prayers. Seeing as how gung ho Kairi was about doing them, she’s the first one Roxas thinks of when deciding on what prayers to take. He chooses ones that he hopes won’t be too difficult after their battle with the ayakashi when they saved Donut’s butt.

Except one of these prayers… might not be like the other.]

Prayer #2, May 28th

[Roxas isn't too sure how he's supposed to support and give strength to someone in a situation like this. He's never had to face someone going to the hospital so often because they were sick. The person who prayed to them turns out to be a young woman who is sitting beside her sick mother in the hospital.

Making sure to keep his voice low, Roxas turns to Kairi.]

What should we do?

[This is Kairi's first time being on a prayer and now she understands why it's not at all the kind of thing you have to be good at combat for. How many thousands of millions of prayers like this get sent up to the gods each day?]

Can we... maybe talk to the woman?

[She turns her head towards the sick mother.]

There are so many reasons that someone goes to the hospital, right? Maybe it's something that can be treated...

[But maybe not.]

Well... Artemis is a goddess of women's health... So this job might just be something we can help with.

[Still...]

I can try. But what do I say to get her attention?

That's good.

[She thinks a little bit longer. On the one hand, she doesn't want to lie to this woman. On the other, they needed her to open up.]

We don't want to spook her, but maybe honesty is the best policy. She prayed, so maybe telling her we're here trying to answer her prayer would work.

['Trying' is honest, anyway, not a promise that they'd succeed.]

Okay. Let me try something.

[He's still in the habit of carrying little charms around. He pulls one out that looks like an amaranth bloom.]

Amaranth flowers mean unfading, or never ending. Maybe giving the woman this and letting her know her mom would always be in her heart would help?

[Starting to sound like Sora...]

[Kairi's expression slowly shifts from concerned to hopeful.]

I think that's a great place to start, Roxas.

[Maybe it won't completely heal the woman's hurting heart, but it could at least be a kind way to introduce them to the emotional daughter.]

After that we can both try to talk to her some more?

Yeah... Let's do this.

[He carefully approaches the woman from behind, waiting till she opens her hand before letting the pendant drop into her hand. She jumps, looking around, asking who was there. Roxas glances at Kairi, placing his hand reassuringly on the woman's back.]

It's okay. We're not here to hurt you. We wanna help.

Prayer #23, May 29th

Keep your head down, Kairi.

[This prayer was more Roxas' style. Find the bad guys and make sure they are brought to the justice they deserve. It's been a while since he's actually been somewhat excited for a prayer. The downside was that this time he wasn't supposed to fight the bad guys. Only report where they were.

At least the yakuza all dressed similarly, so maybe the tracking down might be easy.]

[Kairi nods, a worried look on her face. She can't be as confident as Roxas, but she also knows that she can focus on his dependability. This isn't just punching an ayakashi into submission - this is very delicate work.]

Would it be easier if I was the gloves? Quieter, right?

[It's such an odd question but the situation is serious.]

Keep your phone on vibrate. I'll turn you into your vessel form when we know where they are. You think you can follow from the ground? I'm getting up on the roofs.

[High places are the best vantage point.]

[Even a vibration seems like it would be risky, but now he's splitting them up. It's another risk, but there's also a warm feeling in her chest that he's trusting her alone. This isn't a 'go out on your own and everything will probably be okay' like the first day she arrived. This is much more serious.

Despite the shocked-plus-hopeful look on her face, she nods.]

Yes, I can do that.

[Just looking around for now.]

[He nods and looks for a ladder or something to climb up on. It's things like climbing up the side of a building using a drain pipe that makes him happy to have lived in Koriko. Climbing up things like this, or running across the roof, was always the fastest way to get somewhere in a hurry.

Once he's up on the roof, he gets himself a good vantage point before texting Kairi.]

There's a couple of guys hanging around a car.
There's a dumpster in front of you that you can stick behind.

[Kairi does notice he has some level of skill or natural ability with this sort of thing. The slight pang of jealousy is masked mostly by her awe at his ability and a hope she can do that too at some point. For now, she needs to just help him get through this.

So she does move to the dumpster and sits in a crouch.]

Got it.
I just hope no trash trucks come by and make it difficult to hear...

[She's glad that she can at least make Borderlines now. It should work on the kinds of people who can hurt her most, right? If she does it right, she thinks. So far it's coming very naturally and that's the kind of thing that worries her, because how do you control something like that?]

Prayer #6

[Death wasn't a fun subject, especially the death of those who have lived such a full life. It didn't seem natural at all, which is most likely why they had been allowed to take this prayer. Roxas isn't able to calm himself down as he sees the elderly around him, having picked a park on a lazy afternoon. With a crowd like this there has got to be some draw for whatever is causing this. Which one would have to pass away for them to see the source? Could they find the source before another life has to be taken needlessly?

He lowers his voice so no one but Kairi can hear him.]

[Kairi is still more than happy to split up under the assumption that it'll get them out of here faster, and her only worry is Roxas being able to handle this. The situation that got them here didn't exactly make her want to send him face to face with could-die-any-minute people (with an ayakashi around) again so soon. She assumes that working with his shinki is different because they're dead, not dying.]

Sure. Just kind of blend in with the crowd as best we can and text if we see anything suspicious?

[One day he hopes they don't need to take anymore dying people prayers...

He nods and makes sure his phone is set to vibrate. The ringtone might be too distracting.]

If nothing happens let's meet here again in an hour.

[Dying and childbirth. On one hand it makes sense, but on the other maybe they could at least get two separate gods to deal with big things like that, so Roxas doesn't get so worn out.

She sets her phone to vibrate too.]

Good plan. Any idea how big this thing is we're looking for?

[Gods, even those of life, are stuck dealing with death... it's awful.

He shakes his head.]

No. It's gotta be something small to sneak around easier.

[pure_radiantics]

[Kairi nods. Alright, something small.]

Something small...

[She's tempted to crawl around on her hands and knees at some point. It's not like anyone can see her anyway to look up her skirt, and if they did that's why she has skorts.]

Alright. I'll text you.

[And then she wanders off, not seeing anything herself but looking downward and trying not to run into people at the same time. Eventually she starts hearing little gasps as one child then another gasps in surprise at something, but all of their eye lines are different. One's looking by a tree, another by a bench, another between their parent's legs... For now all Kairi can think is that it's something strange. She doesn't know how much more attuned to the Far Shore children are.]

Prayer #25, May 29th

[Kairi feels the thunder crackle in the air around them even through her vessel form. Wow...]

'Fine, I promise not to tell Sora - in exchange for taking me on more prayers with you after this!'

[Which she's semi-confident Roxas would have done anyway because he's one of those good gods, but it's a bit of a tease while they're working through the thugs to get to the ayakashi.]

Yeah, yeah. Like you'd let me slack on those!

[He stops when he feels the ground shake under them, little bits of dust falling on his head. The ayakashi were scurrying away rather quickly as he blinks.]

.... the whole entire building just shook. That can't be good....

[Maybe getting out of the basement is a good idea.]

[pure_radiantics]

'No, I wouldn't--'

[Oh geez, yeah that's not good. She couldn't feel it, from inside of her vessel world, but she believes Roxas completely.]

'What was it? The ayakashi? That would make it... huge, right?'

[And also terrifying to fight.]

[The guys who he knocked down are still unconscious. Roxas wants to save them, but another tremor rocks the building.]

.... I gotta leave these guys! I can't carry them all!

[It's going to nag at him, so the least he can do is push them under something that might bear the weight of part of the building coming down on them. Like hell he'll let that happen!

Feeling a little better, he takes off, running as fast as he feels safe to, back to the elevator. Pushing the button hard, he dances a bit as the box takes forever to get down there to them. As the door opens, another quake shakes everything, and it goes dead.]

D-Dammit! [Think fast, think-] ... You think I can run up the shaft? I've run up the side of a building before... so it shouldn't be that hard!

[pure_radiantics]

[Kairi winces a little as Roxas pushes the people around. There's pressure against her gloves but she just tries to push back against an invisible wall while he works. It's all she can do right now anyway.]

'I believe in you! You can teleport past the elevator box and keep going, right?'

[That's her only point of hesitation, really.]

'Whatever's fastest, we can make it!'

hot damn i'm back

[Roxa could teleport. But the nearest shrine might be further from whatever was making that noise outside than he'd like. So let's pull a World That Never Was.]

Don't want to risk it. [He summons his Keyblade and unlocks the trap door above him, jabbing it till it falls to the ground.] I can do this.

[Dismissing the blade, he jumps up and climbs through the hatch. Wow was it dark in here. He needs to go up till the 4th door. That was where they came down here. He nods to himself and braces for the run up. At least it wasn't raining this time.]

I'll try not to slip and fall.
