Yukine
Naoto
Well, it comes easier to some people than others. Especially if they have a weird power of their own. Some new shinki fire off those powers instead of drawing a line, if they don’t concentrate hard on it. But it’s basically that easy.
And yep, they’re visible. You’ll see in a minute… [Looking around, this looks like it’s sufficiently away from the festival crowd to not draw any attention.]
Okay. So first make your fingers into a halberd like this. [He makes his hand into a loose fist, then extends his thumb, middle and index fingers.] Then, while thinking about drawing that line between you and what you want kept out, draw a line with your hand.
Line! [Swiping his hand through the air Yukine draws a line that gets transcribed on the ground. A thin line of light springs up, running a few meters up and down the street.]
Like that. Want to give it a try?
[[ooc: video of Yukine learning borderline, if you want a visual reference!]]
Naoto
[At the boy's invitation to try it for herself, Naoto looks at her own hand for a moment. Then, with a more focused, serious expression, she gives it a go.]
Line!
[She repeats the word she'd heard him call out and the gesture he'd made swinging his arm across his body. However, when Naoto tries, nothing happens. She pauses for a moment, takes a deep breath, and then attempts it again.]
Line!
[This time both her voice and gesture have more force behind them, but still nothing happens. She looks at her hand again, a slightly dejected kind of expression now on her face. She manages a weak, half-smile and shakes her head, lowering her hand back to her side.]
As I suspected, it seems there's a little more to it that I've yet to grasp.
no subject
[Dismissing his own line, he then makes a gesture to invite her to walk back towards the festival.]
Anyway, that’s one of the two biggest points of advice I have for you new guys, so to learn about borderline before you’ve even met your god, that’s a pretty good pace you got there. And the other point is to get along with your god as best you can, so– [Yukine stops mid-sentence, his mouth hanging open for a moment. What he’d been going on about finally caught up with his brain.
Ohhhh, crap, Yukine you’re such an idiot sometimes!
Not turning to look at her but his face a mask of devastated embarrassment Yukine asks,]
You haven’t met your god. So you don’t have a vessel name yet?
no subject
[Naoto had started to follow Yukine back towards the festival when he'd stopped suddenly. She blinks at him for a moment in reaction to his question.]
My apologies. Did I neglect to mention that?
no subject
[With a sigh he keeps walking as he explains,] Shinki without a god-given name can’t do shinki skills. They aren’t even shinki, technically, without a name. They’re just spirits.
So anyway, it’s no wonder your borderline didn’t work. Try it again when you get named, ‘kay?
Oh, and yah, you’ll know an ayakashi when you see it, for sure.
no subject
I see. I didn't realize how important these god-given names are, but I understand why it makes sense that I would be unable to perform shinki abilities without one.
So that would make me just a spirit then. Not even a shinki at the moment.
[It's hard for Naoto not to feel a little dejected; although she does her best to not to show it beyond perhaps a look in her ears. After all, Naoto hadn't known why she was brought here, and the little information she had been given was that she was supposed to be this thing called a shinki, which now it turns out she wasn't.]
no subject
Yep. So you might not want to wander too far from the festival alone. An ayakashi might try to eat you. But around so many other gods and shinki you’ll be fine.
Anyway, don’t worry. I’m sure your god will track you down and name you soon. Gods are good at finding their shinki.
no subject
[Naoto's eyes go wide at Yukine's warning.]
Try to eat me?! What are ayakashi exactly?

Kurosaki
Ohhhh.
[Ohhh, so it was the sizes that he was being helped with and not the styles? ... While realization dawns on Yukine's face he also can't help but think, 'that's kinda lame.']]
No, those are two different things.
...'Baseless', huh? What kinda stuff did they say?
no subject
As for the issue of baseless compliments, Shun lets out a huff of annoyance.]
It's mostly incidental, pointless things, like saying I look good wearing different clothes, or Hajime obsessing over my hair. Ren's said so many different things I wouldn't even know where to start.
[And yet...somehow he doesn't sound quite as frustrated about that last bit as he probably should be.]
no subject
Well, I guess there is no point if you look at it like, 'I'm not going to start wearing yukata from now on' and 'I'm not changing my hair'. But it is nice to see people in different clothes, no matter who it is.
...And you gotta admit, your hair is pretty out there. I can see why Hajime-sama set her sights on it.
As for Suzugamori-sama... Heh, I guess he's just that kind of person. [Yukine bets he was just trolling him because they're friends. See, he doesn't even seem that annoyed over it.]
no subject
As for the remark on his hair, he lets out an irritable hiss like he's had this conversation before.] This is just how it grows, so to me, it's normal. Having people quiz me about it is just annoying.
[He settles from that annoyance when they come back around to the subject of Ren, though.] When I asked him why he does it he said it's because it's true and he feels like saying it, so I suppose that way of putting it is right.
no subject
Never mind. You just took me by surprise.
Mmm. [Yukine wonders briefly how Suzugamori-sama gets to say compliments like that and not get in trouble.] I guess it's good to be honest and straight-forward, right?
Hey, thinking of getting along with people, I've never really checked with you. Are you getting along with your shinki all right?
['Cause his heart goes out to you, shinki-kun. It must be a pain in the ass to be with this guy. ...Unless you've a certain kind of personality.]
no subject
There is, at least, a short nod of agreement to what Yukine says next.] Better than lying or dancing around a subject you don't want to talk about directly.
[As for the question of his shinki, Shun gives a slight shrug.] I think he's having a harder adjustment time than Joker - my first shinki, he disappeared last month - but we're not having any major problems. He's just not fond of my vultures.
no subject
Heh. I can kind of understand about not liking the vultures. But in the big picture, that's not the hugest problem, so it's not so bad.
... [Yukine looks around them. They'd wandered slowly away from the bamboo branches for wishes (Kurosaki-sama probably just wanted to get it out of sight out of mind, haha), and are coming up on the game booths.]
Say, have you ever tried one of these before? I bet you'd be really good at it.
[He gestures broadly at the booths- ring toss, water guns, and cork guns are the ones closest to them.]
Of course, not for the fun of it, or to get a prize, but as a challenge? 'Cause, you know, a lot of the stall owners rig the games a little so it's even harder to win.
[He grins a little- is he getting better at figuring this guy out?]
no subject
The remark on the vultures, though, gets a mildly annoyed sigh.] You're all overreacting. They behave as well as you can expect wild birds to.
[Especially since Hajime's managed not to lose any fingers to the ones she stole, so obviously they're more patient than probably even he gives them credit for.
Though Shun had been keeping an eye on where they were heading, he'd pretty much just followed Yukine's drift back towards the festival, so he doesn't look particularly impressed to have ended up back at the game booths. He didn't play any of these particular games earlier, so he shakes his head.]
None of these ones. [And he can definitely tell that Yukine's basically trying to bait him with the offer of a challenge, and levels him with a brief glare, but he did say he'd try new things today, so he eventually lets out an irritable breath.]
I have nothing to prove to you, but fine.

Celty
That's the spirit!
[Yukine gives her what he hopes is a reassuring grin.]
You're right- it's best to not overload yourself and just figure out things as you go.
My advice for you new guys is to get along with your god as best you can, and learn how to make a borderline.
I don't suppose your god has found you yet?
Re: Celty
A borderline? I'll be sure to ask. Thank you.
no subject
And yah, you can ask me, or any of the other shinki who have been around for a bit. Anyone who can explain it can teach you how to do it.
But you should just get a bit settled first.
no subject
Um
If I can't find my god then is there a place I can spend the night?
[It'll wind up being a moot point, but it's still relevant.]
no subject
He’s super-friendly and probably wouldn’t mind putting you up for a night, or if he can’t he’d for sure find someone who can.
no subject
Thank you. I guess I better have another look around and hope I find who I'm looking for then.
I'm Celty, by the way.
[She doesn't immediately go running off. It's early enough yet that she's in no rush, and she honestly wouldn't mind someone more familiar with this place going with her. She just doesn't want to ask because she doesn't have a clear path in mind to search.]
no subject
[He's pretty sure they've already done this, but they'd both been pretty flustered at the time.]
Yukine. [He gestures slightly towards his left collarbone, where the red kanji for his name is only partly hidden by his dark blue yukata.] I’m a shinki, but not one of the new ones. So if you have any questions, I’ll help you out.
But for now, maybe just try standing somewhere where your god will wander across you? If both of you are moving around, you really won't see each other.
no subject
[She does take note of his name on his neck like that though.]
Is that how your god knows to find you? Would I have something like that on me somewhere?
