Summary: Training and informational sessions for newly arrived gods and shinki



Gods and shinki arriving at heaven's meeting hall are, should they allow it, guided to Bishamon's temple, where a reception area and a traditionally styled dojo and training ground have been made available for the day. The gods and shinki are free to take their time during this day to learn about the details of their new life from Amaterasu's shinki or from the many veteran new god and shinki volunteers.




God Training

Newly arrived gods are escorted into a Western-styled reception hall within Bishamon's temple for an informational meeting covering the basics of proper god behavior, although the minor deity conducting the meeting is in too much of a rush to take questions afterwards. They are encouraged to discuss the information with each other and ask questions of more experienced gods, as well as instructed to guide their new shinki appropriately.

Shinki Training

Various shinki volunteers, both in the white-and-gold of Amaterasu's shinki and in Bishamon's red-piped black uniforms, are stationed around the dojo, passing out helpful informational pamphlets. They will be happy to instruct the newcomers in the use of the borderline as well as offering an explanantion on the basics of what is expected of a shinki and the importance of teamwork with other shinki and with gods. Shinki are encouraged to work together to practice what they've learned and discuss their perspectives.

Someone has brought two overflowing boxes of back issues of From Ama, the Heavenly magazine, which includes profiles of successful shinki and gods, historical tidbits, and the occasional magazine quiz to help shinki determine how well they're currently working with their god or what their greatest strength might be.

Physical Training

The dojo is stocked with a wide variety of practice weapons, traditional and modern, to offer some practice opportunity to gods who, for example, find themselves with a sword shinki but are at risk of cutting off their own toes. It's also useful for veteran new gods wishing to train with their current partner shinki.

This month, a clever shinki magician has created a dozen straw-stuffed training dummies, some with sword-length sticks and some with polearm-length sticks, that have been enchanted to really fight back. Unfortunately, the spell isn't perfect yet! They're good training partners, but sometimes they might go a little haywire and try to smack passersby.

Rest and Refreshments

Along with bottled water, there are several large boxes of energy drinks and vitamin drinks in small amber glass bottles, and an array of protein bars and meal bars. One particular shinki in white, a bespectacled twentysomething man, is explaining the health benefits of everything on the table (even the water!) with great enthusiasm to any guest who looks even a little confused. It takes great tact to discourage him.

Party games have been set up on the lawn near the refreshments table: Twister, Kubb, lawn Jenga, and more.

He pauses as the other adds on to his original advice.]

There are way too many people.... who have issues keeping their lines up. They don't have the patience... or the focus... or the goal for it. Some just aren't confident enough....

All those things can affect how well a line is holding up.

[He has to deal with Ken, after all, whose lines still definitely suck.]

[ Huh. No, okay, he's wearing white and he's bandaged up like he'd been burned just like so many of Amaterasu's shinki, but he's the wrong kind of asshole. They're stuck up prissy bitches. This guy's a surly shit.

A surly shit who decided to pick a fight with a total stranger. Gojyo kinda respects that.

He takes a big bite out of his meal bar. ]

So who torched your ass? You remember?

I mean... have you ever seen shinki that belong to the old gods talking on the BBS?

[Wendy sure hasn't, and she crosses her arms over the had of the practice dummy still running rampant.]

Issues keeping up the lines. I can see where that might be a problem.

[But Adrien has the goal doesn't he? Protect his go, be a good worthy Shinki. That's his goal, that's the drive behind the action.]

I understand so I've got to focus on what I want to use the line for?

Right.... and learn to manage energy.

[....Maybe this is something better shown. Besides, Chikusa has to admit that he had no idea what he was in for until that moment when Urashima first broke through the line.]

[He tilts his head trying to think back to what he'd been told.]

They would find me. That we would have a bond and they would know when I was happy or sad. Kairi made it seem like my god or goddess and I would be friends maybe? That we've be partners.

[He shakes his head slightly.] I'm afraid I didn't get much more than you did. They just said they would come find me.

[He's turning to peer at her. 'What if you were mine?' Wouldn't that be good? She seems like a perfectly nice goddess.] Well, you did kind of come and find me, didn't you? Maybe that does mean I'm yours. [He's smiling at her brightly.]

Of course! I'd hate to remind you of someone that makes you upset. That would make you sad.

It's a lot. Like I said just take baby-steps nice and slow. [He nods.] You're welcome. [Blinking bright green eyes at her he tilts his head.] You think it's beautiful?

[ Gojyo’s still a nosy fucker that can’t stop himself from getting involved in shit that isn’t his business. That’s something. They don’t have a lot right now to go on, but that’s something. ]

How the hell should I know? [ He’s just being difficult for the sake of it, not that the answer would matter. ] You remember what got a hold of you? [ It comes out defensive, like he’s throwing the question back in Gojyo’s face, rather than legitimately wanting to know. ]

[ Shinki then. That's hard. Imagine showing up here that badly hurt and not knowing why. How would you avoid thinking about something like that?

Maybe thinking about somebody else's problem would help? ]

Chick with a chainsaw. [ He even manages a believable smirk when he says it. ] You want to be careful of the parties they throw here. They'll let anybody in!

[ Damn, he does owe Sharak some sort of apology.

He reaches for his cigarettes, fumbling them only briefly to get one out and up to his lips. His burned arm hangs at his side for now, but he’s practiced enough already at the process. Other the years, he’s had to work around worse to get his nicotine fix. ]

I’ll pass on the shitty chainsaw parties. [ He inclines his head, indicating the training nonsense. ] Though they don’t sound much better than this.

No but it can offer a deeper understanding of it. Maybe even some insights on how to protect yourself from it.

[She was a spy once. As far as she's concerned, there's no such thing as useless information, only information waiting for the right opportunity to be used.]

[ Wait, this asshole's arm isn't working either? Damn. Poor guy. His terrible poker face undoubtedly lets some of that pity through, although he's quick to look away. ]

This? Nah, this is about as good as it gets. [ He gestures expansively at the shinki practicing borderlines, other, white-robed shinki helping them. ] This is just their bullshit first day of school. Nobody ever gets attacked by those purple tentacle monsters or giant floating swords or anything like that here.

[ Which is really telling, because you'd think that ayakashi would be all over a field full of shinki with no idea how to use their powers. It made a man wonder about just who was in control here? ]

[It's been a while since anyone actually refused an offer to hold Sharak's hand, for whatever reason. Probably because just about everyone on the Far Shore would know what she meant without being told. Sharak just raises and eyebrow and moves her open hand closer.]

[ Someone has more confidence in his abilities than one would think for having just arrived. ]

[Chikusa's voice is dry enough to make fucking tinder.]

[ His lips twitch into a sneer when he realizes what’s going on here. Pity is sure as hell unacceptable. It’s not like he can’t do what needs done, just that his nerves feel like they’re on fire when he tries. It’s different, nothing like getting a damn arm chopped off.

Entirely uncharitable thoughts aside, he just takes in Gojyo’s rambling. Purple tentacle monsters aren’t all that out there, honestly. Giant floating swords? It’s only a little bizarre. But it is telling that this area’s well protected. ]

I’ll pass on that, too. [ Which makes for a bizarre way to say yes. He’s just grousing for the sake of it. Who the hell wanted just anyone to be able to call them? ] It’ll be a pain in the ass to carry around.

[ That sounds like something a little kid would resort to saying. ]

What’s that got to do with it? [ ‘That’ was said as if her offer of her hand was somehow entirely alien and potentially offensive. He’s not holding her hand to go anywhere, thank you very much.

He even starts to shift away just slightly. ]

[Walking would be fine- Sharak doesn't even like relying on the powers given by this place generally- if Genjo weren't so obviously injured. She'd be impressed if he made the trip to either of their temples. He'll also doubtlessly want to come back here later to find people, which he'll need his strength for.]

Genjo.

[Listen to senpai, Genjo. With an eyeroll, she reaches out and lightly takes hold of his wrist. Then there's a rush of energy, the sound of chickens clucking in the distance, and they're in Aditi's foyer surrounded by floor cushions that are perfectly arranged for priests to collapse onto.]

It would only have been for a second, you know.

[ If it were anyone else pulling that stunt, they’d lose that hand. He looks briefly disoriented when they teleport, but that might be more his own tiredness playing at odds with his need to be aware of his surroundings. No threats that he can pick up on, not that he really anticipated her to blindly teleport them somewhere dangerous. ]

Thank you, but I’ll pass next time. [ It’s a dry statement. He’s not motivated to make much of a fuss, but still. ]
