open - summer jobs!
Who: Axel (
doestheickyjobs) and you! Extra starter for Pippa, April 11.
Where: A shop that sells 31 flavors of ice cream, but which is definitely not any kind of trademarked store going by the initials B.R., on the coast in Chiba conveniently near to a little shrine
When: April 11 - 15 (let me know in your subject line what day you're going for)
What: Axel's still not sure what the big deal is with ice cream, but serving it sounds like an okay job for a guy who's a little tricky to notice sometimes.
Warnings: N/A! Possibly sarcasm.
OPEN
[Man... the afternoon really dragged between customers. Axel's sitting on a stool behind the counter, tipped back until it balances dangerously on two legs, spinning a pencil between his fingers. There's a couple of high-school kids giggling together over their phones and a couple double-scoop sundaes buried in whipped cream at the corner table, but other than that, the store is dead, and Axel's just about to go out of his mind with boredom.
His red hair is emerging in spikes all around the regulation hat, which he's just sort of stuck on roughly in the center and pinned there. The pink apron-and-hat combo just does not go, but whatever, he thinks. It's a paycheck. Roxas's ideas hadn't been too bad, so far, except that customers tended to ding the service bell wildly and "Excuse meeee--!" like he's not sitting right there every time.
Speaking of bells -- the one on the door chimes as it swings open, and Axel's chair falls back to all four legs with a thump.]
Hey there, how can I help you?
CLOSED TO PIPPA
[So: gotta butter his goddess up a bit, Axel thought, with a wry half-smile, and straightened the collar on his work T-shirt before he headed up the steps to the front door of her temple, right on time. Anyway, it'll be nice to get her out. She needs some excitement in her life. Maybe even some fun!
He raps loudly on the front doors, and steps back, one hand propped on his hip.]
Pippa, you there? Come on, let's go!
[She'd better not have been expecting this outing to be too proper.]

[He reaches out to place a hand lightly on her shoulder and guide her down the forested path. So, straight from the Far Shore to a shrine on the Near... it's the one thing that's kind of like teleporting that shinki can do, too, and the jeweled forest fades around them to a much more mundane garden and a red torii.
He waves at the gate.]
This way!
no subject
What a lovely shrine!
[ It's certainly nothing like her temple, but it has its charm. ]
no subject
[Axel leads the way out of the shrine under the torii.] It's a nice neighborhood. Kind of quiet, but hey, you can't have everything.
The shop's over there.
no subject
[ She'll follow him. ]
You're not terribly bored, are you?
no subject
[He rolls his shoulders backwards, propping one hand on his hip and glancing up at the sky. The cherry blossoms are pretty much all gone on the Near Shore by now, and the branches have a sad, wet, wind-tossed look with the leaves only halfway grown in.]
It gives me a creepy feeling, though, you know? Like we're just waiting for whatever happens next.

[He points up ahead, at a bright and cheerful sign hanging outside the glass windows of a small shop.]
That's the ice-cream place!
no subject
[ ... but some of that melts away when she sees the shop. ]
Oh, what a darling, charming place! You really work here?
no subject
[He tosses her a pleased grin. She likes it! Great.]
You should try some of the ice-cream flavors, those are the best part. Come on.
He pushes the door open to the accompaniment of a jingling electronic bell, and holds it for her (she's glared at him often enough for forgetting that he's actually starting to remember.)]
no subject
[ Oh, that was a joke. Wasn't it.
.... ANYWAY. Pippa's going right in. ]
Thank you!
no subject
He grins at her, glancing back her way.]
What flavors do you like, anyway? I mean -- in general. Chocolate stuff? Fruit?
no subject
[ Pippa is happy, her tone reflects as much. She's been able to settle in well; how can she not be happy? Certainly she misses Fee and Gemma and Ann, but she's sure they're doing just fine without her. They're so much stronger than she is, their heads not full of silly dreams. They have things going for them--not like Pippa, whose fate had been to marry a man toward whom she couldn't even feel the slightest affection....
... Silly Pip, Fee'd say. A simple question, drudging up feelings just because whatever chocolate she'd ever had was with Fee... Pippa might not be the most clever, but she's got emotions for days. But let's not focus on that. She's here for ice cream. ]
I am rather fond of chocolate, yes! Strawberries and chocolate work wonderfully together, don't you think?
no subject
[It sounds like a good combination. And aren't chocolate-covered strawberries a dessert, too?
Not one they've got here, but what they do have is chocolate and strawberry cheesecake. He pulls out a chair for her at the table nearest the door.]
You have a seat, and I'll bring the ice cream right over.
no subject
I shall wait for you here, [ she says, taking a seat. It's actually a pretty comfortable place, hm! ]
no subject
Not that he plans to apply these lessons to any less Victorian women he runs into. They're a Pippa-only thing so far as he can tell.
It doesn't take him that long to get the ice cream ordered (plus a small bowl of sherbet for himself) and head back to the table with both cups in hand.]
Here you go.
[He slides her ice cream across the table to her as he takes a seat.]
See if you like it!
no subject
My, it is delicious! Both flavors have been mixed flawlessly.
no subject
[Reassured, Axel takes a bite of his own ice cream. It's less small and definitely not ladylike, but at least he's not chewing with his mouth open or anything, and he swallows before he starts talking again.]
Ever had ice cream before? Or just ice-cream bars?
no subject
[ A single cup. Incredible. ]
no subject
[And Sora, and ... okay, everybody keeps getting weirdly excited about ice cream at him. It's good! Axel'll grant that much.
It's nicer to share it with people than it is just to eat it, though, so far as he can tell.]
I guess I liked it myself. There was even a popsicle stick in my pocket when I got here. Weird, huh?
no subject
[ ... Okay, that is really weird, who would keep garbage in their pocket... ]
Completely bizarre. Do you often keep strange things in your pockets?
no subject
[Weirdly touchy about some things, but then, Axel's not about to start complaining about other people's weird touchiness around Pippa. She's the queen of that issue. Undisputed, even.]
I don't keep junk lying around! It said 'winner' on it, so maybe it was some kind of prize thing. I don't know.
no subject
[ She huffs. ]
I never referred to it as "junk"! You're putting words into my mouth, you know.
no subject
[This way, that totally means "junk." He leans back in his chair, smirking.]
Anyway, who knows what it means? Maybe I got killed for lottery money or something.
[Probably not something he should talk about! But he's just bullshitting, so he doesn't see why morbid jokes have to be a bad idea. It's not like that's his real death.
He shrugs and pops a spoonful of ice cream into his mouth.]
no subject
[ .... what a... what a funny joke that's totally not morbid in any way..... ]
... That would certainly be a tragic way to go.
no subject
[This is a lie. Probably. Who knows! He's not going to worry about it right now, anyway. He scoops up another spoonful of ice cream, licking at it to make it last a bit longer.]
Being a shinki's a pretty good life, if you ask me.
