38 - Power Palette Swap

When: April 15th - April 18th 2017 (March 1st - March 8th 2019)
Where: Throughout the Far Shore and Near Shore
Summary: A couple of intrepid magical investigators unknowingly trigger some mishaps among the New Gods and Shinki.



For two weeks, the Ama investigators have been combing the compound where Cultists were dealt a heavy blow by the New Gods and Shinki. Among them, two in particular had been looking to move the Crystal that the cultists had in their basement, the stand that it sat on, and the dolls nearby. Combined with Waver's analysis, Judar succeeds in using his magic to transport the Crystal out of the basement.

As they manage that, a ripple effect washes over the New Gods and Shinki. There is a slight sense of Vertigo for some, a stronger wave for others, and then things start to change...



As It Happens: April 15

Everyone was minding their own business. Perhaps they were on the Near Shore helping complete a prayer, or they were in the Far Shore attending to various godly duties. Regardless of where everyone was, it's around noon when some things start to change. A mild sense of vertigo happens to those who start to experience physical body changes, while a stronger wave seems to wash over the God or Shinki's skin if their powers are changing, or perhaps even a sudden stop-in-your-tracks deadening of feeling if being depowered entirely.

April 16

Later in the afternoon, through no extra effort of the Crystal-movers, a loud noise like a subwoofer kicking into effect issues from within the Crystal, knocking anyone away who was near it by several feet. The one-shot noise reverberates in the ears of all New Gods and Shinki, triggering another change for some. At the Crystal, the black color that appeared when the former Goddess entered the Crystal fills more of it.

April 17

Closer to 7pm, once more, the noise issues forth from the Crystal, louder and knocking people back several yards this time. The Crystal fills with black and grey. Some might swear they can see a face of the white-grey against all of the black, resembling an Inkblot / Rorschach test style picture.

Aftermath: April 18

Around 10am, the black coils from within the Crystal settle down into more of whispy smoke, much harder to see in it. There's a slight tug in the direction of the Crystal regardless of where New Gods and Shinki stand, and with that pull, the change effects go away and all are returned to as they were.

Ginia has to think for a moment where her laptop is. Right, she had it on her desk and ran out to handle some work outside the temple before she was taking her time coming back.

"Yes, it is. The charging cable should be there too." Ginia debates having him see if there's other work she can pick up too, but she can make arrangements through all the chats. "Thank you. If anyone asks, tell them I'm fine? I was vague about what happened."

Because a shinki should not know what they look like as a child and the last thing she wants to do is accidentally trigger any questions in someone's mind.

"Of course, I'll bring that too." He nodded. He had already thought of that. He knows that as dangerous memories are for shinki like him and Ginia they are even more so for the other shinki in Lord Ebisu's temple. For some reason they do not have memory-dreams like the newer Shinki. They have absolutely nothing of their past.

Suzaku is unsure whether that is a good or bad thing, considering what he has remembered so far. Considering that he thought he had a grasp on who he was but every new memory reminded him that he actually had no idea.

No shinki should know what they looked like as a child and Suzaku was lucky in that he could focus on the practical. Helping Ginia, without letting his mind try and think, it probably helped that he had a memory of being a child, of being around the age Ginia was now and walking through fields of bodies.

But who knew what it could do to one of Ebisu's shinki. He will let them know Ginia was safe and divulge no other information if he ran into anyone on his quest to collect her laptop.

Ginia smiles and lets Suzaku go on his errand. She pulls a few books from the shelf and finds a table to settle down at as she waits for his return.

The strangeness of the last few days only highlights the differences between the old and new shinki. As far as Ginia can tell, none of the other shinki in her temple were affected. That Ebisu was caught up is troubling, but there's some relief the old shinki of the Mi clan are untouched.

It doesn't make it less painful to know she's a possible danger to them. It's dangerous enough she has a memory of her birthday, of others from her life. Maybe it's fortunate she can't easily accidentally let things slip.

It's also unfair, the new able to remember where the old can't, though those slices of memories can be such a double-edged sword. Ayakashi always live in the shadows of shinki. Ignorance be such bliss and so destructive too.

For the time being, if a bit of loneliness is the price to pay for her family's safety, Ginia can bear it. She settles down to read and waits.
