38 - Power Palette Swap

Where: Throughout the Far Shore and Near Shore
Summary: A couple of intrepid magical investigators unknowingly trigger some mishaps among the New Gods and Shinki.



For two weeks, the Ama investigators have been combing the compound where Cultists were dealt a heavy blow by the New Gods and Shinki. Among them, two in particular had been looking to move the Crystal that the cultists had in their basement, the stand that it sat on, and the dolls nearby. Combined with Waver's analysis, Judar succeeds in using his magic to transport the Crystal out of the basement.

As they manage that, a ripple effect washes over the New Gods and Shinki. There is a slight sense of Vertigo for some, a stronger wave for others, and then things start to change...



As It Happens: April 15

Everyone was minding their own business. Perhaps they were on the Near Shore helping complete a prayer, or they were in the Far Shore attending to various godly duties. Regardless of where everyone was, it's around noon when some things start to change. A mild sense of vertigo happens to those who start to experience physical body changes, while a stronger wave seems to wash over the God or Shinki's skin if their powers are changing, or perhaps even a sudden stop-in-your-tracks deadening of feeling if being depowered entirely.

April 16

Later in the afternoon, through no extra effort of the Crystal-movers, a loud noise like a subwoofer kicking into effect issues from within the Crystal, knocking anyone away who was near it by several feet. The one-shot noise reverberates in the ears of all New Gods and Shinki, triggering another change for some. At the Crystal, the black color that appeared when the former Goddess entered the Crystal fills more of it.

April 17

Closer to 7pm, once more, the noise issues forth from the Crystal, louder and knocking people back several yards this time. The Crystal fills with black and grey. Some might swear they can see a face of the white-grey against all of the black, resembling an Inkblot / Rorschach test style picture.

Aftermath: April 18

Around 10am, the black coils from within the Crystal settle down into more of whispy smoke, much harder to see in it. There's a slight tug in the direction of the Crystal regardless of where New Gods and Shinki stand, and with that pull, the change effects go away and all are returned to as they were.

So you use magecraft to create smoke bombs?

[Because that's how he's understanding that.]

Sorry Edge. [He hadn't meant to insult him. He was also interested in how Edge did things. But if Edge had not created the smoke then... Who did?]

No! I use ninjutsu to create smoke! There's no bombs involved, and ninjutsu may have some similarities to black magic but it isn't the same!

[You two! Argh!]

Look, it's like -- [He starts to make a gesture with his hands, then stops. Starts again, then stops again.]

...Uh. I think I know why I feel like I'm missing something.

Hm? is it not working? Is there something amiss with your magic circuits?

[Saber apparently refuses to accept that there might be places that don't function under the same rules that he's used to. Not that this should really come as a surprise for anyone.]

[Magical circuits? Suzaku is even more confused now except... He thinks he knows what Edge is talking about.

He can't explain it, but he raises his hand.] Like this?

[And he channels the ninjutsu, causing smoke to billow up around them once more.

How... He had no idea how that was possible or how he had just done that...]

...It's like this very temple has decided I'm having too much luck being the sane and well-adjusted one, and has decided to tip the balance further away from me...

[Between Saber's weird talk and Suzaku's sudden use of ninjutsu, Edge doesn't even know where to begin.]

They do say that the universe in general moves towards chaos.

["They" being various programs on the science channel.]

Does this mean Suzaku has stolen your abilities? Or have you swapped, perhaps?

[If so, he feels sort of left out. Unless they've all swapped and now Edge can fire highly destructive beams of light from anything he feels like.]

I don't think I have anything to give in a swap. [As far as he knows he has no abilities, at least nothing has made itself known to him in the five months he has been in the heavens.

He had stolen Edge's abilities? How was such a thing even possible?]

I'm not overthinking things way too much, so safe to say this was a one-way trade. [Don't give him destructive light powers!]

[...although Minako has those, maybe she'd find it hot. Okay, give him a little.]

That seems terribly unfair.

[He takes about a nanosecond to think it over before he has a terrible promising idea.]

Perhaps if we recreated the circumstances, we could cause it to happen again?

[Someone just wants to make smoke bombs.]

Recreate them, sir? I'm not sure it's anything we did. [They had just been sparing, they have trained together every day practically since becoming Saber's shinki and quite a few times before then as well. He's not sure that's what has caused it...]

I'm sure it wasn't. [Edge self-consciously dusts himself off, never mind that he doesn't need it.] I WOULD like it fixed, though.

Hmmmm...

[He's doing that thing where he makes the thinking noise but isn't actually thinking again. It's obvious.]

The prudent thing to do, I suppose, would be to wait it out, but that isn't guaranteed to work. I'm sure I could think of quite a few other solutions. The one that immediately comes to mind is running at each other at a great speed and colliding.

[Is he getting his ideas from cartoons? Probably.]

Colliding at a great speed... [Just. Checking that he heard that right. Suzaku looked at Saber for a moment and then at Edge. Was he missing something? How was colliding going to help?]

What would that accomplish?!

[Edge is not a model of tact around his god.]

I haven't the slightest idea!

[There wasn't exactly a whole lot of thought involved.]

But if you don't know what will work, you also don't know what won't work!

That's true I suppose. [They don't know anything and surely some information will be better than no information.] But there are probably safer experiments we can try first.

[Suzaku makes up for Edge's lack of tact.]

You absolutely do know what won't work even if you don't know what will work! [Thank you, Suzaku. Edge has been reduced to flailing his arms as he desperately struggles to keep his sanity in the face of such insane logic.]

Not for certain! Nothing ventured, nothing gained, as they say!

[Saber is completely undeterred. He'd do it if someone suggested it.]

[Oops. Suzaku smiled at the two of them bickering, even if he felt strange it was good to know some things would never change.] Perhaps we need a different plan, we could find out what is causing all of this.

[Some things are welcome to change just a little, darn it.] Thank you, Suzaku. We should at least look outside and see if anything else weird is going on.

[Now he's disappointed. His shinki are right, of course, and it's not like he's going to stop them, but his idea would have been so much more fun.]
