You really think that's the heavens? That's a simple way of looking at it.

[While the heavens are undoubtedly incompetent at least, there's more potential risks here than just them. To assume everything happening right now is coming from them seems narrow-minded to him.]

And besides, if you think they take those people away as punishment, that they know the people who dissent against them, what makes you think hiding behind false words and airs is going to help?

[It's possible he has someone else in mind, but given the path of the conversation, he doubts it.]

So because we don't know what's happening, there's no reason to be careful? Isn't that a much simpler way of looking at it?

There's a difference between being careful and living in fear of retribution. I've lived the latter before. I'm not doing it again.

[If his outspokenness comes with consequences, then fine. He'll take them as they come. But after having crawled in ruin and wreckage, fearing the slightest footstep as an enemy until his world developed the technology to fight back against their invaders, he has no interest in crossing that line again.

Though Shun isn't exactly not prickly, he seems used to shedding mild insults, if the general levelness of the look he gives Hakkai is any sign.]

But if you think I'm not being careful just because I speak my mind, that's your disadvantage.

[It's not a type that Hakkai has any patience for at all. His smile has gone very thin-lipped indeed, and after a moment, he inclines his head slightly.]

Coming to this place already took any friends I had. If you've got a problem with not being able to protect your friends, don't drag me into it.

[It's not entirely the truth, and hell knows Shun would be pissed off if the heavens came anywhere near Yuto. But he's kept that card close to his chest, only one person he didn't already know before coming here knowing the actual identity of the shinki who's caused his utter disdain for the treatment of them here, and so Hakkai's observation, to him, is shallow. He worries about his friends, yes, but he also trusts them to be capable and not need him to fuss over them like that.

Apparently he isn't interested in extending the conversation either, and he tosses his head to one side.]

[Careful of his own clumsiness -- the cherry-blossom smell has been affecting him, even in this short amount of time -- Hakkai inclines his head to the other man and turns to go. Grandstanding fool, he thinks. Grandstanding, and clearly not safe for his surroundings. He'll have to wait and see how long Shun survives.
