[Well, they didn't go running after young men with bad reputations because their husbands were handsome and attentive in bed, did they?]
[He takes another lazy drag, letting himself get fascinated for a moment by the way the cloud-diffused sunlight seems to scatter around the branches overhead.]
Sha Gojyo, was it?
Hijikata Toshizou.

[ Yeah, there were some good ones back then. A lot of bad days, but a lot of good ones too. It's easier to remember the good on a nice day like this, isn't it? ]
So what's your story, Hijikata Toshizou?
Sorry for the slow tag, been working weekends and got really distracted yesterday!
[It's a long story, and he's not sure how much of it he really wants to tell someone new, even if he's liking them well enough so far. For a moment, he's not sure either what the best way is to summarize the parts he doesn't mind making public here. Everything sort of seems either too personal and complicated or too impersonal and simplified.]
[Then again, he's already told him about one of the details he's always found more embarrassing -- that he wasn't always part of the warrior class. And focusing on the later days... well, that sounds like a really fast way to bring down the pleasant mood they've got right now.]
Well, I told you how I was when I was a brat. My brothers always tried to get me to settle down, but I never really had the temperament for wasting all my time working in a shop and listening to some old man tell me what to do. Made friends with some of the people from a local training hall, and if I wasn't working or with a woman, I was usually there.
A number of us joined up with a group of soldiers being gathered to guard the shogun on a journey to the capital. Ended up in charge of a group of soldiers working to keep the peace there, somehow.
How about you?
I'm the last person to judge anyone for being slow!
Me? Nothin' so respectable. [ Falling into private security and getting picked up by a bigwig... that's not a bad way to go!
Now let's see. What's he willing to share? ]
I've been on my own since I was a kid. Mostly driftin' around, you know. Find a town, find a hottie to shack up with, maybe find some work lookin' scary for some big guy, or liberating something for him. After a couple months you wear out your welcome and move on, totally free.
The last town I ended up in, the big guy was this priest, right? So I fell in doing jobs for him with a couple other guys. Before I got brought here, we were on a long job, been at it for a couple years, heading across the country to... well. [ He chuckles, drawing off his cigarette. ] Keep the peace was th'end game goal, so let's go with that.

[Yeah, it's best not to dwell on how things worked out in the end. For him, or for... close to any of them. Better to focus on Gojyo's story, instead.]
A wanderer, huh? Sounds like quite an adventure.
[The careful lack of details makes it sound a little sketchy... but Hell, who's he to judge?]

Adventure<'s one word for it, I guess. [ He combs his hair out of his face, wishing briefly for a tie back. ] You ever notice that most people who are so excited about adventure are th'ones who never leave town? Just back an' forth every day, market and temple and bar and back home. [ He scissors his fingers in the air, little legs scurrying about their daily routine. ] When something adventurous happens, that's when they all start to panic.

Of course. You don't dream about things you already have -- but adventure will do that to people who aren't used to it or cut out for it.
