I'm not that amazing! There were many other people--much more amazing people!-- than me. I'm not nearly as powerful or impressive as even half the other mystics. I just... [She pauses and secures one of the bandages, tilting her head as she tries to figure out how to explain it.] I just want to help people and make them happy. I just want peace.
no subject
[He lifts his arms out of her way, glancing thoughtfully up at the ceiling. I just want to help people and make them happy, says Kanzeon Bosatsu... she's certainly well-cast in her role, isn't she?
He has to admit that he can see why Sanzo's so fond of her (and there's no way to interpret his grumbling other than fondness. He's more obvious than he'd like to be.) It's the sort of modest purity of heart that would sound naive, except that Hakkai's seen her in a fight.]
Trying to make other people happy is hard work! I don't think I'd be suited for it at all.
no subject
But that's the beauty of people! Even if you're not working at it, you don't have to try to make people happy. There are people that are thankful and happy just because others exist.
[She moves back in front of him and beams at him, speaking with an easy confidence and grace, like everything she's saying is just so obviously true] Like me! Hakkai, I'm happy that you're alive! And even if everything here goes all topsy-turvey, I'm happy we met, I wouldn't change that!
no subject
[He bites back the sardonic comment that leaps to mind about his being alive. After all, Gojyo thinks they might be. Whatever his reason for that -- and Hakkai's going to trust him that it's something he can't ask -- perhaps Hakkai should stop reminding people that shinki are dead.
They're not normal shinki, after all.]
I'd still prefer it if things don't get too topsy-turvy.
no subject
Ah, well. Hakkai means well, probably, and her smile is more natural when she looks at him again.] True, though! I'd rather everything be nice and peaceful for a while.
[A pause and she takes the moment to examine his scars again, reaching out to lightly touch them with her fingertips. First the one on his stomach, and then the fresher one, her expression deeply concerned and troubled. Her voice is soft.] Do they hurt...?
no subject
The old one usually doesn't. I'm afraid the other is still a little sore!
[It's not that he minds her touching him, but there's something about that light brush of fingertips that he doesn't like at all. Maybe it's that he can't feel any touch very well on the scar itself. A change of subject back: that's what he needs. Her laughter had sounded false...]
... Please don't take it the wrong way, Genjo, it's just that I'm not a very good person at all.
[Whatever might be in his past aside, he's fairly certain he's a petty and selfish person, and also entirely too fond of revenge.]
1/2
She clenches her fingers again and clasps them behind her back to stop the temptation to keep poking at scars--literally and perhaps figuratively.]
Ahah, well... I don't believe that. It doesn't matter what a person is, it matters what they do; That's what I told my version of Gojyo once. [She smiles fondly] Just because you think you're a bad person, if you do good things... That's what's important, right? I think you're fine just the way you are!
[Hesitation; she doesn't really talk about this much, though she sort of drunkenly babbled about it to Gojyo at some point] And beside that... I'm always being told that I'm 'too good or 'too pure.' People would be afraid to approach, no one would touch me because they were afraid they'd 'dirty' me somehow. Even the people I considered my friends, or, at least, wanted to be friends with...
It's lonely, being 'Genjo Sanzo.' It was different when I was traveling with everyone, before I became well known. It was easier then. [She really wishes she had that simpler life back, even if it meant constantly looking over her shoulder for an attack. She'd take that over this 'holier than thou, perfect princess on a pedestal' life she had to adopt since.] So being told 'you're a better person than me' is just a little...
[She doesn't like it on principle--she's not better than anyone--and because she doesn't like to hear Hakkai putting himself down like that anyhow. Even if he's just beng honest.]
no subject
Ahaha! Sorry, sorry... I shouldn't talk about these kinds of things! [It's her own burdens to bear, after all. Maybe if Sanzo remembered more she could talk to him about it, but--
Ah. Maybe she kind of understands a little more where Gojyo's coming from now.]
You're as easy to talk to as the Hakkai I knew, but I can't keep thinking of you as the same people... I'm sorry, Hakkai. [Her apology is meant sincerely too, which is probably worse]
no subject
[He's not offering to touch her, but it's not because he's worried about sullying her divinity. It's more that the conversation already feels a bit awkwardly intimate. Perhaps because he reminds her of a different Hakkai.]
That said, even if I'm not the same person you knew, I hope we can still have a good relationship.
[He clears his throat, slightly embarrassed, and picks his shirt back up to very carefully start putting it back on.]
no subject
She starts to giggle and though she covers her mouth with her hands it doesn't stop it from becoming full-on laughter. But it's not an unkind laughter, just bubbly and bright and happy] Yes, yes! Let's be good friends, Hakkai! You can count on me!
[And, with wide eyes and a too-innocent tone she asks:] Does this mean you'll let me heal you now? It's the friendly thing to do.
no subject
[Right back at you, Lady Sanzang. He beams at her, obnoxiously cheerful, as he buttons his shirt with quick fingers.
She's a bit obstinate herself, isn't she?
That's the kind of person Hakkai gets along best with. His smile shades, imperceptibly, into something less teasing and more genuine.]
no subject
[But it's said laughingly and she fights a smile] You're lucky you're recovering and I can't hit you, you know! But-- Hmm...
[She tilts her head one way and then another, thinking] A compromise! My temple has a lot of nice hot springs, Sanzo and I use them all the time! They're nice to relax and heal in, and it'd do your body good. If you won't let me heal you, will you at least soak in one of them for a bit?
That way I can at least sort of heal you, and I won't have to use my power at all! [And then she grins, because how can you argue against this?? You can't, don't try!!]
no subject
...Well, all right, I'll have to visit. Tomorrow, maybe? [It probably will be good for the bruises, at that. He nods in acquiescence.
Besides, maybe agreeing will soften her up a little for his next statement.
He'd really prefer not to be punched, after all.]
For now, I think I should go back to the cherry grove.
no subject
But sure, tomorrow would work! Hmm, maybe I should invite everyone else too, that'd be fun, right? [Nothing like sake and hot springs right?] ...But if I want you to actually relax, maybe not. [She says it laughingly but she can already imagine the absolute turmoil that'd come from this.
His request is- Honestly not surprising. She looks at him with an exasperated Really? expression and sighs deeply.] How did I know you were going to ask that? [She frowns at him, expectant. Give her one good reason why she shouldn't just strand his ass here]
no subject
[That's a good reason! See. It's a specious reason, because Gojyo has ... Asshole ... and he can call Sanzo as well, and he's still favoring his side and should probably wait a few more days before he gets into a fight. But it's also close enough to the real reason (what if something happens and I'm not there) to, he hopes, make sense.
Over his smile, his eyes go briefly distant. Maybe nothing will happen after all, and it'll be a quiet party.
That would be nice.]
no subject
You're not allowed to move around too much! And don't start any fights! And make sure you stick by Gojyo then so he can help you! [She's goes quiet a moment and then gives a harsh sigh, turning to start putting her sleeves back on.]
I don't like this. [Just so he knows!!]
no subject
I'd rather have avoided it myself!
no subject
Sanzang hesitates a moment, realizing she doesn't actually know what happened there other than 'Hakkai struck a nerve.' Given their conversations thus far, Sanzang's not too sure she can blame him at this point............]
Hakkai... What exactly happened between you and Fuujin?
no subject
[He'd rather not admit to Sanzang just what happened with Elsa before Goku was released, or why Fuujin had started the conversation out wishing out loud for Hakkai's death. It'd just complicate things. He sighs.]
So I told him he was as useless for not protecting Amaterasu from -- all this. That's when he knocked a tree over on me.
Really, I should have known better!
[When dealing with someone whose powers exceed yours, don't let them have the first blow free. It's basic strategy. Hakkai just hadn't expected Fuujin to go immediately for deadly force.]
no subject
[She shakes her head and glances to Hakkai out of the corner of her eye, thorugh her lashes.] "Whoever doesn’t flare up at someone who’s angry wins a battle hard to win." You didn't attack first, so no matter what you still came out on top and certainly the better person.
...What are those gods thinking...? [Sigh.] At least that other one seemed reasonable.
no subject
[He's certainly willing to judge Fuujin for it anyway, though. What he said about Elsa's death -- that's not going to be easily, or quickly, forgotten. He keeps the anger off his face with an effort, glancing back at her.]
Suijin, you mean? Yes... I did get the feeling that they'd been told to play nice with us, didn't you?
But it seems Fuujin has a sensitive temper.
no subject
But she hums, adjusting her sleeves to make sure they're on properly and crosses her arms over her chest thoughtfully.]
That temper can be used to our advantage though. If he's likely to attack that easily, it means he'll likely let things slip easier too. But he's clearly very strong too, so it's not lie it'd be easy... [Sanzang sighs again and shakes her head]
I don't want to think the worst of them, but they're making it hard to trust them, huh?
no subject
[And they haven't yet provided any good reasons to trust them, either. Having accusations and attacks thrown around -- well, it hardly helps.
Hakkai's not sure how much weight he should put on Fuujin's behavior, and the distantly thoughtful look on his face lingers for a long moment after he first speaks.]
If you're thinking of taunting him into saying too much, I'd recommend doing it on the network. I've seen him there before.
He didn't deny it when I asked if the Heavens had been responsible for Elsa's disappearance. If that's true....
[Was it just meant to provoke? Or are all the missing gods and shinki Heaven's doing?]
no subject
That said... I don't think I can forgive someone who loses their temper so easily and seriously! [Says...the girl gunning for Sanzo but. That's different okay?] Hmm.
I hate not having all the pieces. [Sigh.] I'll talk with Sanzo about it some too, okay? I'm sure if we're all working together, we'll find out something! Maybe I should try talking to Amaterasu too. [She trails off, thinking this over before she gives Hakkai a gentle smile and holds out her hand]
Come on, let's get back to the party before I change my mind.
no subject
[Doesn't she get along well with Sanzo? Well -- so far, when he's lost his temper, he hasn't actually shot anyone over it.
To Hakkai's knowledge.
He smiles and reaches out to take her hand.]
... Thank you, Genjo. I'd offer to ask around a little more myself, but I think it may be better if I don't provoke any of them too much, for now.
