28 - The Hungry Forest (Final Battle)
Who: Everyone!
What: At the heart of the mysterious forest lies a magical trap.
When: Nov 14, evening
Where: Within the forest
Summary: Working together, and with the (reluctant) help of some menaced cultists, the rescuers have pierced the wooden wall into the heart of the forest.

The sky is clearly visible here, but it’s an evening one – it’s taken the day to work their way through this far. Those with some astronomy knowledge will also be able to tell it’s a sky on Earth, and anyone who can climb up above the treeline will see a vast, mountainous and wooded area, with the lights of roads, train tracks and small towns glittering here and there. They're clearly not in the Heavens anymore. Somehow, in their journey through the forest, the rescuers have emerged onto the Near Shore.
An icy breeze is blowing, and although the vegetation is unseasonably green and lush in this clearing, there are patches of snow visible at the foot of some of the trees, hinting that they're fairly far up the mountain.
Rescues
The clearing here at the heart of the forest is vast, and five colossal sigils are etched into the earth, each one holding an incredible amount of power. It’s on these sigils, North, South, East, West, and Center, that the trapped gods and shinki can be found. Those unlucky enough to be at the Center sigil are bound by hypnosis, each staring at a firefly spirit that hovers before their unblinking eyes. These victims are still and unresponsive, and the spirits will need to be destroyed to free them. The firefly spirits can be harmed by both physical and magical attack, though they likely won’t stay still to let themselves be easily extinguished.
The captives trapped on each of the other sigils are around the edges of the clearing, entangled in vines, brambles or whatever other limbs the trees could provide to bind them to this place. Some may also be under the effects of the hypnotic fireflies if they’ve been particularly troublesome, while others who have fought less might have only those bindings needed to prevent them fleeing. Regardless of how tightly they're restrained, all of the kidnapped gods and shinki on all of the sigils look drained, the severity depending on how long they’ve been there. Some are merely tired-looking, whereas others are barely clinging to consciousness. Whether their power is being used to feed the spell or being stored for something else to come, one thing is clear – those trapped need to be freed before anything more can be done.
Sigils
Those sigils beneath each group of trapped gods and shinki are powerful constructs, brimming with energy and meticulously maintained by the cultists up to now. It’s the same power as what blankets the entire forest, but it's focused on each of those five points. They must be the source of the spell that's caused all of this.
If the spell is to be broken, the sigils need to be broken as well, but it’s going to take more than just scuffing out the etched lines to break the magic. Attacking with shinki in their vessel forms or using blessed water to wash away the magic will be most effective, but for those who didn't bring blessed water or don't have the energy left to transform, there's one other option. The clearing is lit by traditional paper lanterns hanging from the trees all around, and any object set aflame with these lanterns can be used to burn the spell out of the ground bit by bit.
The trees and any remaining soulless shinki are still furiously opposing the rescue efforts, the surviving cultists are continuing to work on maintaining the spell, and it will take time to fully destroy the sigils. However, as the sigils deteriorate, the effects of the spell will begin to fade, and characters will find it easier to access their supernatural powers to speed the process along. Gods' and shinki's powers (that is to say, the special power they gained as a god or shinki, rather than canon powers) will be as effective as a shinki or blessed water against the sigils.
But be careful. As each sigil breaks, some of the magic escapes, but some is captured by the remaining sigils. For the spell to fully disappear, all five must be destroyed – and quickly, because there’s only a matter of time before this power becomes unstable.

Kaden
He really can't, actually.
It's as if he's frozen in a relaxed state, unable to move his eyes and unable to even hear anything going on around him. Despite standing, he's really being held in place by vines threading up his legs, supporting his weight and keeping him from collapsing entirely. His clothes show signs of struggle, burn marks here and there from the fireflies, rips and tears from where he'd struggled against the trees and more than a few scratches on the scraps of exposed skin and along his cheek. His hair and tail fur are noticeably dull, unbrushed and dirty and littered with bits of forest debris, and his face appears wan - he'd been one of the first to disappear, after all, and in this state there's no telling how long it's been since he's had food or water. Ears perpetually perked forward and tail lifted in interest, Kaden can't register anything except the calming glow of the firefly, reflected in his wide, unblinking brown eyes.]

Kaden! Kaden![ She calls out to him desperately, but he doesn't respond. When she makes it to him, she sees the firefly--the same as the one's she been seeing around-- and the way he just stares at it. She ignores it for the moment, shaking his shoulders to try and get his attention, then cupping his face to have him face her. ]
Kaden, are you okay? Can you hear me?
[ She can't help but look him over, noticing the state he was in. His lips were dry and chapped, dark circles under his eyes....There were scratches all over him, though no serious injuries. Still, the very sight of him made her heart sink. What had they done to him..? ]
Please, Kaden..Say something..!

[ Nanako had split apart from her own shinki and the others she'd come in with when they reached the clearing, her attention having been drawn to the Northern Sigil where so many of her friends had been trapped. Even as some of the others remained behind to figure out how to destroy the Sigil itself, Nanako's head had snapped up at the sound of Alex's cry and the call of Kaden's name. Her head turning to follow the other god's path, she spots the fox trapped in the center and quickly runs to join Alex.
It's not hard to spot the vines and the firefly that hold him trapped, too, not to mention the state he's in. Her own powers have been badly drained by this place, leaving her feeling tired and weakened, but her friends need her help, so she keeps going, determined to help. Even if she's saving what she has for now to help with healing once they get her friends free. ]
Alex, the bugs are bad! We have to get rid of the bugs!

She stumbles over her feet, half from exhaustion and half from just not knowing where to go. There are people here. They need help. Healing...? She has to help them. She has to help them, she has to help them. These are her friends! Her family! Innocent people! She can't sit back and leave them like this. )
How did this happen...? ( She recognizes the fireflies from earlier run ins in the forest and she knows they need to be taken care of. Drawing her talismans from her robe tiredly, she steels herself.
There are some people fighting nearby, trying to take care of the sigil. She heard the child god say something about needing their shinki and holy water to cut through the spell and Sakura is lacking one and has little of the other. )
I think... I think I can help with the fireflies. ( It's not much. ) But we need to break this magic circle first.

[They'd been separated in the dark and the struggle, between soulless shinki, ensnaring vines, and, well, everything else. Tsuzuki brightens as he sees her familiar slight figure and pink hair in the glint of the lanterns, and breaks into a run.
He's exhausted, too, and it's not the fastest or most graceful run he's ever managed. He's trying, though. She's heading for one of the sigils with purpose, and if he can get there fast enough, he can help her do what she's planning to do to attack it.]

( They'll be tired, she can tell. Look at their state! She knows it's a lot to ask but... and as if the heavens have heard her prayer for a miracle or some sort of help, a familiar voice calls out to her, )
Tsuzuki-- Tsuzuki-san, I'm here!
( Oh, what a relief. She's already feeling ragged from her magic usage so far but with Tsuzuki here, he'll be able to help and provide some much needed relief. Just seeing him gives her a little more strength. )
This magic circle! ( She wonders if Tsuzuki will understand her. She knows he has some familiarity with magic but without his memories, it's difficult for either of them to know the full extent, ) I think it's the source.
( She isn't sure what will happen if they can destroy it but she knows its something that must be done. )
Let's go.

Kaden, can you hear me now?
[ As she asks, she's reaches down to grab a sharp enough rock to use to try and cut through the vines wrapped around his arms. ]

Dry lips part just slightly, but he doesn't move otherwise, as if the spell is taking a moment to completely wear off.]

She doesn't have a weapon on her, but seeing Alex go for a sharp rock, her eyes light up and she does the same, scrounging around on the forest floor for a moment before finding what she's looking for and moving to cut away at the vines trapping his legs. They're easier for her to reach, at least. ]
Hold still, Kaden, we're gonna get you out of here.
