28 - The Hungry Forest (Final Battle)
Who: Everyone!
What: At the heart of the mysterious forest lies a magical trap.
When: Nov 14, evening
Where: Within the forest
Summary: Working together, and with the (reluctant) help of some menaced cultists, the rescuers have pierced the wooden wall into the heart of the forest.

The sky is clearly visible here, but it’s an evening one – it’s taken the day to work their way through this far. Those with some astronomy knowledge will also be able to tell it’s a sky on Earth, and anyone who can climb up above the treeline will see a vast, mountainous and wooded area, with the lights of roads, train tracks and small towns glittering here and there. They're clearly not in the Heavens anymore. Somehow, in their journey through the forest, the rescuers have emerged onto the Near Shore.
An icy breeze is blowing, and although the vegetation is unseasonably green and lush in this clearing, there are patches of snow visible at the foot of some of the trees, hinting that they're fairly far up the mountain.
Rescues
The clearing here at the heart of the forest is vast, and five colossal sigils are etched into the earth, each one holding an incredible amount of power. It’s on these sigils, North, South, East, West, and Center, that the trapped gods and shinki can be found. Those unlucky enough to be at the Center sigil are bound by hypnosis, each staring at a firefly spirit that hovers before their unblinking eyes. These victims are still and unresponsive, and the spirits will need to be destroyed to free them. The firefly spirits can be harmed by both physical and magical attack, though they likely won’t stay still to let themselves be easily extinguished.
The captives trapped on each of the other sigils are around the edges of the clearing, entangled in vines, brambles or whatever other limbs the trees could provide to bind them to this place. Some may also be under the effects of the hypnotic fireflies if they’ve been particularly troublesome, while others who have fought less might have only those bindings needed to prevent them fleeing. Regardless of how tightly they're restrained, all of the kidnapped gods and shinki on all of the sigils look drained, the severity depending on how long they’ve been there. Some are merely tired-looking, whereas others are barely clinging to consciousness. Whether their power is being used to feed the spell or being stored for something else to come, one thing is clear – those trapped need to be freed before anything more can be done.
Sigils
Those sigils beneath each group of trapped gods and shinki are powerful constructs, brimming with energy and meticulously maintained by the cultists up to now. It’s the same power as what blankets the entire forest, but it's focused on each of those five points. They must be the source of the spell that's caused all of this.
If the spell is to be broken, the sigils need to be broken as well, but it’s going to take more than just scuffing out the etched lines to break the magic. Attacking with shinki in their vessel forms or using blessed water to wash away the magic will be most effective, but for those who didn't bring blessed water or don't have the energy left to transform, there's one other option. The clearing is lit by traditional paper lanterns hanging from the trees all around, and any object set aflame with these lanterns can be used to burn the spell out of the ground bit by bit.
The trees and any remaining soulless shinki are still furiously opposing the rescue efforts, the surviving cultists are continuing to work on maintaining the spell, and it will take time to fully destroy the sigils. However, as the sigils deteriorate, the effects of the spell will begin to fade, and characters will find it easier to access their supernatural powers to speed the process along. Gods' and shinki's powers (that is to say, the special power they gained as a god or shinki, rather than canon powers) will be as effective as a shinki or blessed water against the sigils.
But be careful. As each sigil breaks, some of the magic escapes, but some is captured by the remaining sigils. For the spell to fully disappear, all five must be destroyed – and quickly, because there’s only a matter of time before this power becomes unstable.

Garry
Throughout the clearing, there are so many people- more than a dozen- bound and pale. Whatever the purpose of the spell, it's clearly draining them ragged.... but those for those in the very center.
Not for Garry, who counts among them.
That doesn't mean he looks well, however. His entire frame is limp as he sits there, shoulders slouched, with no resistance or signs of fear as would normally be seen from the easily alarmed shinki in such a tense situation. Instead, his gaze is utterly blank from what can be seen of the one eye visible. For all that it's focused on the firefly hovering before him, it almost seems as if that were more a coincidence before he simply.... stopped.
Even at the sounds of people stumbling into the clearing, whatever shouts or words that come... He doesn't react. He just stares.

He really can't, actually.
It's as if he's frozen in a relaxed state, unable to move his eyes and unable to even hear anything going on around him. Despite standing, he's really being held in place by vines threading up his legs, supporting his weight and keeping him from collapsing entirely. His clothes show signs of struggle, burn marks here and there from the fireflies, rips and tears from where he'd struggled against the trees and more than a few scratches on the scraps of exposed skin and along his cheek. His hair and tail fur are noticeably dull, unbrushed and dirty and littered with bits of forest debris, and his face appears wan - he'd been one of the first to disappear, after all, and in this state there's no telling how long it's been since he's had food or water. Ears perpetually perked forward and tail lifted in interest, Kaden can't register anything except the calming glow of the firefly, reflected in his wide, unblinking brown eyes.]

It wasn't an easy task to put him to his knee, however; Ryoma's clothing is usually impeccable, but there are obvious signs of wear and tear, his hair unkempt (and yes, the normal way it looks is a result of plenty of careful brush), and at least one cut that proves that his chin guard isn't a totally stupid idea. He'd fought back with what he had, but magic is magic, and there are some things in this world more powerful than one man... sword... spirit... thing.
It's all Kaden's fault. ]

CENTER SIGIL ATTACK (OTA)
Everyone! Gods, please use your shinki, if possible! They can help cut through the spell- and surely holy water as well!
[And not just rending or holy water. After a moment, taking a deep breath, Takami kneels down to let loose some of the lantern's flame... and winces as the fire seems to burn bright.]

He doesn't have any blessed water on him, though, so instead he's ended up with what looks like some hefty tree-grown mace pilfered from a soulless shinki. The end is quite merrily ablaze from some of the lantern's flames, and he's plunging it into the ground periodically and dragging it over the sigil lines.]

It doesn't matter so much now, though, considering the circumstances. Not only is Shun's skin so pale he's just about colourless - trying to use his power so much to escape did plenty enough of a number on him to be getting on with - he's no longer struggling, faintly glowing eyes focused on a pair of the firefly spirits. From the way his teeth are still gritted and the clammy feeling to his skin, he probably managed to fend off the things through sheer willpower for a while...but that only lasts so long against magic like this.]

Lann might not be the sharpest tool in the shed and he may not be the strongest fighter, but this is a contest of willpower and he sure has a lot of that. Those fireflies have him right now, but even as drained as he is, he's still fighting them. His eyes aren't completely glazed over and sometimes he almost manages to tear his gaze away from the glowing lights. Almost.]

Yet that's exactly where he is, and for almost four days at that.
At this point, Caster is not even conscious. A local unfriendly firefly was here to help to pacify him but eventually, the constant drain of the energy is what knocked him out for good. Signs of struggle are clear, and everything, his clothing, his hair is in complete disarray. Neither his hands nor feet are visible under the vines and roots that hold him in place. Apparently, a special care was put to make sure he couldn't move a finger- and for a good reason as the bark of nearby trees is scathed with burn marks. Lack of any grass in the nearest vicinity is another good sign that while he was still conscious he worked really hard to set the area ablaze ]

NORTH SIGIL ATTACK (OTA)
[That would be Kimi trying to get the attention of anyone who's been left surprised and confused near the North Sigil, or those prying their loved ones down. He raises his voice in the way that says he's used to getting himself head.]
For anyone who's injured, please go over to Ebisu-sama to help them get treated! If you're a god with a shinki in good health, please, help tear through the sigil! Rend seems to work just fine! If you can't, holy water probably works too! Can someone please get some of those lanterns as well?
[From that point on, he'll try to guide anyone injured back to his god, trusting others to help.]

[Forrest seems as serene as he is tired, utterly entranced by the dancing lights of the fireflies in front of his eyes. He puts up no resistance at all, seemingly content to allow the vines to slowly tighten around him and drain his energy. Unfortunately, he's not that sturdy to begin with, so it's questionable how long he'll last like this. But at least he has a calming light show to watch as his own inner light flickers and sputters.]

Sigil Attack OTA
Most of the humans are wisely starting to back off now, enough that the sight of two of the wooden weapons, each burning at both ends, is easily visible, as are their continued motions. They switch seamlessly between plunging into the sigil and smashing aside any resistance, the contact of the flames brief enough to only scar, but acting as a more than effective deterrent to most attackers - especially considering the impacts are heavy enough to knock out any but the most resilient opponents.
Wielding the makeshift weapons in each hand is Shun, looking like he's just been dragged out of the pits of hell, long-dried blood on one side of his face and shallow wounds dotting most of his minimal visible skin. There's a worrying intensity to his movements even considering how he usually is; it looks very much like he's not running so much on energy reserves as rage and outright refusal to acknowledge his bodily limits until this is all over.
It might be wise to speak up and flag any approach other than taking out one of his opponents for him - nobody wants a face full of flaming wooden heavy weaponry.]

Rescue-Closed to Planned Folks
He can remember hearing about everyone vanishing, remember that a forest that had sucked in Sora long ago and how they had to fight through to get out...and his mind went on auto pilot. He had people to save: Goten, Yona, Izumo...he couldn't stand around and do nothing. Not again. Even if it was reckless, he thought he prepared better but sadly even he couldn't fight nature. But he sure could be fucking stubborn about it given the state of his clothes, torn from scraping the branches and tearing, the blood crusting over his wounds but prior to his capture. Call it pride or just plain bullheadedness, he didn't want to have this be lost in vain...but in the end, it was.
Aymeric is breathing for sure but there's definite signs of injury, weither it was from before or after capture is a mystery. But for those who have come this far, he simply stares at the firefly unmoving. May want to work on that first...or get both it and the plants at the same time. Either way, it's best to get him out quick.]

Yona - Closed to Rescue Party
Her face is pale and drawn, eyes hazed and empty and the shallow rise and fall of her chest is the only sign of life from her as she remains frozen there, unaware of anything around her. Her cloak is shredded and torn, flecks of blood dark on the fabric from where thorns have bit into flesh during her struggles. Her skin is smudged and dirty and a dark bruise discolors high on one cheekbone, half-hidden behind the ragged fall of hair around her face, tangled with leaves and twigs.
She doesn't move, doesn't look up, even should voices sound or movement happen around her. Her eyes merely gaze unseeing into the gleaming allure of the firefly's glow, lost in its light entirely. ]

[You cannot think your way out of a mass of vines and brambles that hold your limbs quite fast. Nor can you cite a forest for breach of school rules, and you certainly can't impress it with your Idol Rank (which, in Mirei's case, is still something of a work in progress). Nothing in her life has prepared her for anything close to the situation she has found herself in: she is trapped far from home in the heart of a forest, and more exhausted than she can remember feeling before. Struggling got her nowhere but more tightly entangled, and fighting is so far out of the question it isn't even worth factoring into her calculations.
[So no, she is no trouble. She's too inexperienced, too tired, and - she has to admit it - absolutely and entirely too afraid. Say she escaped, somehow: what then? Far better to save her energy, but that has been sapped all the same.
[Mirei has no idea how long she's been trapped here. Too long, that's all she knows: long enough that night has passed, then day, then night again; to have realized she is trapped beneath familiar stars. Long enough to have run through all her options a thousand times and come up with no plan at all, long enough to wonder if she'll ever be anywhere else again, long enough to have run out of anger ten times over and learn that crying helps absolutely nothing, and is made a million times worse by not being able to wipe her eyes. She's slipping, once again, into what feels like sleep when - with her surroundings now familiar to the point of utter tedium - something changes. Footsteps. The voices of strangers. All right, Minami-kun, calculate this.
[There is one thing that Mirei can do, and can absolutely do even from here: project her voice.
[She takes a breath. She composes herself.]
PRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII~!!
[And then she's run out of breath, and she slumps, unreasonably exhausted - but comforted, just a little: feeling a little more like herself.
[Whatever helps.]

INJURY AND ORGANIZATION (OTA)
Is that what those humans were doing...?
[He sounds almost heartbroken as the words wobble out of him, and one of his shinki reaches down to touch his shoulder, only to have his hand grabbed.]
We have to help them! They're all injured-
[Frustrated and scared, he stomps down, right near the lines of the northern sigil.... and there's a jerk of power as he Rends through it.]
[The group pauses, and Ebisu blinks down at his shoe.]
Ah... Kunimi! [That renews the uncertainty that's been plaguing him since they've been lost in the forest.] Everyone we have to tell the other gods!
[In the haste of organization, one of the shinki- Aomi- suggests using their jackets as makeshift bandages, two other shinki are released from their vessel forms...]
[And that's how other people stumbling into the clearing might find themselves directed to Ebisu's tiny form where he's drowning in large black jackets, almost drooping a little bit with the energy he's expended but trying to tear through the jackets to make bandages and tourniquets.]
[Alternatively... They might be directed to go help out his shinki fighting to get rid of the sigils: Takami at the center one, Kimi at the northern one, Aomi at the eastern sigil, Unmi at the western sigil, and Kiwami at the western sigil.]
[OOC: Feel free to make other top levels beneath this one for your characters to help out with the medical and healing effort for everyone who's been banged up! Or feel free to dump injured characters (whether they were kidnapped or not) over by Ebisu to be tended.]

For record's sake, would it be okay to assume that these idiots + Lancer dropped by this field hospital spot? )

BATTLE END
It's the central sigil that breaks first, flaring brighter and brighter until the light goes out with a dazzling flash. The lines left behind are now no more than scratches in the muddy forest floor, and they wash or scuff away at a touch. As soon as it dies, though, the magical light in the other sigils brightens, beginning to look strangely unhealthy under the redoubled attacks.
The west sigil goes next, its brilliance scaling up to a blinding flash in the same way, and light from the remaining three begins to pulse, one brightening, then another, with no discernible rhythm. All the remaining cultists flee into the trees before the pulses meet on the eastern sigil and it, too, flares and burns out.
The north and south sigils, opposite one another, begin to flicker. Their light has a greenish cast now, an unhealthy one, green like decay and not the verdant color of the daylight forest. As it brightens, the trees around the edges of the clearing begin to toss wildly, as though thrashing in pain.
Then, for every denizen of the Far Shore in the forest -- whether they are in the central clearing or still lost somewhere in the underbrush -- everything abruptly goes dark.
Starlight returns slowly to find all of them scattered around a wide meadow in the Western District of the Far Shore. There is no forest, nor any of the hooded cultists, anywhere in sight.
The soulless shinki who have been named by a god are all here, although if asked, they claim not to remember anything between entering the forest and reappearing in this meadow. None of the soulless shinki without gods are among the group, nor are they at the temple where they once resided. Strangely, though the soulless with gods are here, a close inspection might reveal that some of them seem to have an extra name somewhere on their body....
It doesn't take long after the forest's disappearance for dozens of white-robed shinki to appear, running towards the group across the meadow. Many of them are scratched, muddied and bearing leaves in their hair or burns on their pristine robes; those shinki are mostly holding weapons. Behind them are others, also muddied, carrying first-aid supplies, blankets, food and water that they quickly begin distributing to the wounded or weakened. They tell anyone who asks that they'd entered the forest too, following the other searchers, and were still fighting their way through it when it disappeared. They will continue searching the meadow and assist anyone who needs it in returning to their temple.
