28 - The Hungry Forest (Final Battle)
Who: Everyone!
What: At the heart of the mysterious forest lies a magical trap.
When: Nov 14, evening
Where: Within the forest
Summary: Working together, and with the (reluctant) help of some menaced cultists, the rescuers have pierced the wooden wall into the heart of the forest.

The sky is clearly visible here, but it’s an evening one – it’s taken the day to work their way through this far. Those with some astronomy knowledge will also be able to tell it’s a sky on Earth, and anyone who can climb up above the treeline will see a vast, mountainous and wooded area, with the lights of roads, train tracks and small towns glittering here and there. They're clearly not in the Heavens anymore. Somehow, in their journey through the forest, the rescuers have emerged onto the Near Shore.
An icy breeze is blowing, and although the vegetation is unseasonably green and lush in this clearing, there are patches of snow visible at the foot of some of the trees, hinting that they're fairly far up the mountain.
Rescues
The clearing here at the heart of the forest is vast, and five colossal sigils are etched into the earth, each one holding an incredible amount of power. It’s on these sigils, North, South, East, West, and Center, that the trapped gods and shinki can be found. Those unlucky enough to be at the Center sigil are bound by hypnosis, each staring at a firefly spirit that hovers before their unblinking eyes. These victims are still and unresponsive, and the spirits will need to be destroyed to free them. The firefly spirits can be harmed by both physical and magical attack, though they likely won’t stay still to let themselves be easily extinguished.
The captives trapped on each of the other sigils are around the edges of the clearing, entangled in vines, brambles or whatever other limbs the trees could provide to bind them to this place. Some may also be under the effects of the hypnotic fireflies if they’ve been particularly troublesome, while others who have fought less might have only those bindings needed to prevent them fleeing. Regardless of how tightly they're restrained, all of the kidnapped gods and shinki on all of the sigils look drained, the severity depending on how long they’ve been there. Some are merely tired-looking, whereas others are barely clinging to consciousness. Whether their power is being used to feed the spell or being stored for something else to come, one thing is clear – those trapped need to be freed before anything more can be done.
Sigils
Those sigils beneath each group of trapped gods and shinki are powerful constructs, brimming with energy and meticulously maintained by the cultists up to now. It’s the same power as what blankets the entire forest, but it's focused on each of those five points. They must be the source of the spell that's caused all of this.
If the spell is to be broken, the sigils need to be broken as well, but it’s going to take more than just scuffing out the etched lines to break the magic. Attacking with shinki in their vessel forms or using blessed water to wash away the magic will be most effective, but for those who didn't bring blessed water or don't have the energy left to transform, there's one other option. The clearing is lit by traditional paper lanterns hanging from the trees all around, and any object set aflame with these lanterns can be used to burn the spell out of the ground bit by bit.
The trees and any remaining soulless shinki are still furiously opposing the rescue efforts, the surviving cultists are continuing to work on maintaining the spell, and it will take time to fully destroy the sigils. However, as the sigils deteriorate, the effects of the spell will begin to fade, and characters will find it easier to access their supernatural powers to speed the process along. Gods' and shinki's powers (that is to say, the special power they gained as a god or shinki, rather than canon powers) will be as effective as a shinki or blessed water against the sigils.
But be careful. As each sigil breaks, some of the magic escapes, but some is captured by the remaining sigils. For the spell to fully disappear, all five must be destroyed – and quickly, because there’s only a matter of time before this power becomes unstable.

That's why as soon as her bonds are weakened she uses what strength she can muster to tear herself free. Clarent materializes in her grip and she swings the massive sword at Yuna, mistaking her goddess for one of her captors. ]
Stay the hell away from me!
[ She stumbles forward and drops to one knee, confused by her exhaustion. What's wrong with her? She's never felt like this before. If not for her true nature as a Servant she would be unconscious from the massive energy drain she's suffered.
By now the cultists and soulless shinki pursuing Yuna have realized what's happening and rush toward the pair. Mordred stares at the blurry hooded shapes approaching, recognition cutting through the fog in her mind.
They're the ones responsible for everything that happened to her.
That realization is accompanied by a blinding hatred and an overwhelming desire to inflict pain. It's a feeling which bleeds through her link to Yuna like lava. ]
I'LL KILL EVERY LAST ONE OF YOU!
[ She roars and launches herself at them. Despite her weariness, she's more than a match for the humans. The ones who attempt to defend themselves fall beneath brutal swings of her sword. Others who pose no threat to her attempt to flee or plea for their lives but Mordred cuts them down mercilessly. Every so often she hurls a torrent of magical energy from her sword that obliterates anything in its path be it flesh or tree.
Mordred continues to slaughter everything in her vicinity like a wild beast when all the extra energy she's expended begins to catch up to her.
With heaving breaths she hacks away at a corpse of the last cultist she killed, mutilating his body even further. ]
Think you can do whatever you want to me!? Huh!? You can't do anything now, can you!?
[ That Yuna is watching any of this hasn't even occurred to her yet. ]
no subject
Still, there’s something totally different about watching that, and being witness to the scene unfolding in front of her.]
W-wait... [Her voice is small at first. Her spirit is still tired, and her mind is having trouble processing all of this at the speed it’s happening. There will be time later, she figures, to sort through reactions to some of this. The unbridled rage and the downright senseless carnage from that... shutting herself off to that gives her a little more courage to face everything else, For now, she can ignore that. For now, she needs to cut her partner’s rampage short. Balling her fists and gritting her teeth, she yells out,]
Saber, STOP!
no subject
Of course, that isn't a fair judgment. After all, Mordred doesn't know what Yuna has been doing these past few days, or that it may have been difficult to find this place. But she's too incensed to consider any of that, and Yuna attempting to stop her rampage only makes things worse. ]
SHUT UP! You don't get to show up after everything and tell me what to do!
[ Crimson lightning erupts from Mordred and she spins on her heel, flinging a wave of energy at Yuna. Without waiting to see if her attack even lands Mordred starts to charge, bringing her sword up for an overhead strike. Every movement feels like she's pushing herself but rage lets her push on; rage that she's now directing at Yuna instead of the cultists. ]
I don't need a worthless protector-god like you! Just go back to whatever insipid good deed you were so busy with— It was obviously a bigger priority for you than your shinki!
[ Mordred's anger continues to flood through their link but now there's plenty of sorrow mixed in as well; the sorrow of someone who feels that they've been let down. ]
no subject
Whether or not Mordred's judgement is fair, it's not something that's coming from nowhere. It isn't like the soulless shinki trying to stop the rescue team - something's taken control of them, they're acting without any emotional investment in the situation. With Mordred, this is all her own feelings, stemming from her experiences over the past few days. Yuna still doesn't know exactly what's been happening, but for all of her own loneliness and worry over her shinki having gone missing, the fury and sorrow washing through their bond tells her it can't compare.
Safe behind her shield, Yuna takes a beat to steady herself, mouth tightening in a stern line and hands clutching the fabric of the shirt over her chest.]
I've been worried sick about you. [She's trying her best not to sound too accusatory, too defensive, but the insults slung her way have definitely eroded some of that authority she was commanding earlier.] I don't want to fight you, but I'm absolutely not leaving here without you, either.
no subject
[ A hail of sparks erupts as Clarent connects with the shield. Mordred continues pushing against the barrier until it becomes apparent that it won't budge. She normally likes these fairies but they're just adding to her frustrations now.
Mordred desperately wants to believe what she's being told but it all just feels like excuses for why she was left here for so long. ]
Worrying? If that's the best you could do then you really are useless!
[ She all but spits the words out. ]
While you've been worrying, I've been busy dying!
[ At least that's how she feels right now; whatever the cultists did to her has made her feel far weaker than she can ever remember.
It's a shame their connection only goes one way or Mordred would be able to feel Yuna's sincerity. In Mordred's eyes, Yuna being shielded by her fairies, while an act of non-violent self-defense, makes it feel like she's being looked down on. ]
You don't have to fight or leave... You can just DIE!
[ She charges forward again furiously hammering her sword against the barrier in an attempt to overwhelm it or find a weak point. ]
1/2
No!
[Even if it weren't for the ever present fairies protecting her so thoroughly, there's no way she'd ever let something so senseless happen to her. She's won't die with her shinki there to witness it, and she certainly won't die by her hand. Her conviction, her complete faith in this matter, hardens her resolve up once more.] I'm not going to die, and I'm not going to let that happen to you, either!
[She's a hero. Death is simply not an option for either of them as long as she can do something about it.]
We're partners, and the quickest way to get us both out of here is if we work together. Fighting like this isn't going to do either of us any good, and if you want to be angry with me... that's fine. [It hurts to admit it, but if she's failed to gain Mordred's trust so much that an outcome like this was possible, then she'll accept that responsibility.] But for now... [Waiting for an opening, a moment in which her shinki is pulling back to wind up another blow, Yuna lets the last bits of her spare energy flow down to her feet, giving her the kind of boost she'll need to spring forward when the timing is right...]
I need you to just stop!
no subject
Gyuki, at least, remains to ward off any attacks that Mordred may still be willing to pull out.]
no subject
Whether Mordred wants to stop attacking or not is out of her hands now— her furious attack on the barrier has left her completely out of breath, creating the perfect opportunity for a counter-attack. Instinct allows the shinki to read her goddess's subtle movements, letting her predict how Yuna intends to attack. Armed with this knowledge Mordred knows she should sidestep to avoid the reprisal strike but in her current weakened state and at such a short distance, she wouldn't be able to move fast enough to completely avoid being struck.
Which is why seeing Yuna fumble and fall comes as a surprise. ]
What... the hell? Even you... can't be this pathetic.
[ Now's her chance to finish this. Even with the stupid cow in the way Mordred is confident she could find a way to land a blow. She musters the strength to raise Clarent again but then hesitates, taking a closer look at Yuna for the first time since breaking out of her prison.
She's covered in minor injuries which Mordred is certain she didn't inflict. So then... how? Could it have been the journey here? Was it that arduous?
As she pieces things together, her anger slowly begins to drain replaced by a sick feeling amassing in the pit of her stomach. Mordred knows exactly why her goddess is hurt...
Yuna had put herself in harm's way to come find her.
Planting her sword in the ground she kneels using the weapon to support herself. ]
...Why do you have to be such an idiot?
[ Mordred speaks softly but her tone is hard. But as annoyed as she tries to sound she can't stop her feelings of concern from reaching Yuna. ]
