28 - The Hungry Forest (Final Battle)
Who: Everyone!
What: At the heart of the mysterious forest lies a magical trap.
When: Nov 14, evening
Where: Within the forest
Summary: Working together, and with the (reluctant) help of some menaced cultists, the rescuers have pierced the wooden wall into the heart of the forest.

The sky is clearly visible here, but it’s an evening one – it’s taken the day to work their way through this far. Those with some astronomy knowledge will also be able to tell it’s a sky on Earth, and anyone who can climb up above the treeline will see a vast, mountainous and wooded area, with the lights of roads, train tracks and small towns glittering here and there. They're clearly not in the Heavens anymore. Somehow, in their journey through the forest, the rescuers have emerged onto the Near Shore.
An icy breeze is blowing, and although the vegetation is unseasonably green and lush in this clearing, there are patches of snow visible at the foot of some of the trees, hinting that they're fairly far up the mountain.
Rescues
The clearing here at the heart of the forest is vast, and five colossal sigils are etched into the earth, each one holding an incredible amount of power. It’s on these sigils, North, South, East, West, and Center, that the trapped gods and shinki can be found. Those unlucky enough to be at the Center sigil are bound by hypnosis, each staring at a firefly spirit that hovers before their unblinking eyes. These victims are still and unresponsive, and the spirits will need to be destroyed to free them. The firefly spirits can be harmed by both physical and magical attack, though they likely won’t stay still to let themselves be easily extinguished.
The captives trapped on each of the other sigils are around the edges of the clearing, entangled in vines, brambles or whatever other limbs the trees could provide to bind them to this place. Some may also be under the effects of the hypnotic fireflies if they’ve been particularly troublesome, while others who have fought less might have only those bindings needed to prevent them fleeing. Regardless of how tightly they're restrained, all of the kidnapped gods and shinki on all of the sigils look drained, the severity depending on how long they’ve been there. Some are merely tired-looking, whereas others are barely clinging to consciousness. Whether their power is being used to feed the spell or being stored for something else to come, one thing is clear – those trapped need to be freed before anything more can be done.
Sigils
Those sigils beneath each group of trapped gods and shinki are powerful constructs, brimming with energy and meticulously maintained by the cultists up to now. It’s the same power as what blankets the entire forest, but it's focused on each of those five points. They must be the source of the spell that's caused all of this.
If the spell is to be broken, the sigils need to be broken as well, but it’s going to take more than just scuffing out the etched lines to break the magic. Attacking with shinki in their vessel forms or using blessed water to wash away the magic will be most effective, but for those who didn't bring blessed water or don't have the energy left to transform, there's one other option. The clearing is lit by traditional paper lanterns hanging from the trees all around, and any object set aflame with these lanterns can be used to burn the spell out of the ground bit by bit.
The trees and any remaining soulless shinki are still furiously opposing the rescue efforts, the surviving cultists are continuing to work on maintaining the spell, and it will take time to fully destroy the sigils. However, as the sigils deteriorate, the effects of the spell will begin to fade, and characters will find it easier to access their supernatural powers to speed the process along. Gods' and shinki's powers (that is to say, the special power they gained as a god or shinki, rather than canon powers) will be as effective as a shinki or blessed water against the sigils.
But be careful. As each sigil breaks, some of the magic escapes, but some is captured by the remaining sigils. For the spell to fully disappear, all five must be destroyed – and quickly, because there’s only a matter of time before this power becomes unstable.

Only to have it all come rushing back as Kija shouted for Yona, his head snapping up to Kija's shoulders again. He couldn't see, initially, but off Kija goes quick as he can and Yoon finds himself tempted to snatch Kija's cloak. Finally, he manages it, but he's not sure he can hang on. ]
WAIT! It could be a TRAP! We haven't even found what TOOK her yet!
[ He's not looking for a fight, but he's worried a fight may find THEM. At least when Yona had been asleep for a month, they never truly lost sight of her. Having her whisked away from them had been a wholly different, frightening experience. ]
no subject
Her eyes blink, as if she's struggling to snap out of the hold the bugs have, but they've drained far too much of her energy away already for her to be able to fully resist. The vines around her tighten slightly as the firefly on her knee flits its wings, its glow growing more intense for a moment in an effort to keep her gaze - and her mind - enthralled. ]
no subject
[Sorry, Yoon. You're on your own with little things like concerns for personal safety and why this might have happened.
[The bug is fascinating, it is sickening. If it were anything but a bug it would be the work of a second to sweep it away: but no. There it is. Plump, glossy, twitching obscenely as it stretches its wings, bathing the Princess's face in a sickly, phosphorescent glow. Kija recoils from it instinctively; instinctively, he works at the vines that hold Yona captive (gently, gently! he cannot harm her more) and yes he knows it is not the only problem, not the biggest problem, but it is the problem he understands, the one he can do something about without... without rendering himself absolutely useless.
[He cannot let himself be made useless.]
What is it? Is that... is it normal?
[Knowing what normal behavior would count as, for a bug, would mean watching the wretched things. No.
[Kija bows his head. He continues his struggle with the vines.]

No, I don't think so, not even for this strange Heaven place.
[ Yoon turns away slightly so that he can be a look-out while Kija works at the vines. Clearly he doesn't need a knife at all. ]
I was kind of hoping we'd run into the people who kidnapped her after I saw her looking like that - I don't know how to snap her out of it. Do you?
no subject
[Bugs bugs bugs he knew it, he had warned them--
[Curse these vines. Though they break and tear easily beneath his claws, a glance back up at his Princess, and then another, confirm to Kija that she has not moved, has not so much as acknowledged the relief. She simply sits - her empty eyes locked upon the creature that rests upon her knee. Maybe he has no idea what to do next, maybe the knowledge that Yoon does not either makes him feel absolutely ill. All Kija knows for certain is this: that insect's presence is an absolute affront. It is too much to be borne.
[Kija takes a breath and holds it; he tenses, and closes his eyes. He supposes he should thank Hak. This one is, at least, far smaller--
[A simple flick might not dislodge the thing. A swat from a dragon's claw is another matter entirely]
Brute! Let her be.
[Bugs bugs bugs oh god. He will need to wash his hand for a week...
[But nothing if not effective. So much for that distraction.]

Without the vines holding her trapped and without the insect keeping her captive, she's left with her own strength and a slowly-returning awareness.
Too slow to keep herself from starting to slump forward, however. Her strength gone, her body drained and sore and aching, Yona gives a soft groan as she starts to topple forward, like a puppet with her strings suddenly cut. ]
no subject
[ Kija did an excellent job getting rid of the bugs, but Yoon has been focused on Yona the whole time, so when she starts to fall he moves to catch her. Unfortunately he's not that strong and she's all dead weight right now, so he crumples to his knees but at least she didn't hit her head. That's all he cares about. ]
Thank goodness...
[ Not just for him catching her without completely falling as well - that she's still alive. He hadn't wanted to believe otherwise, not after her stint asleep recently too, but that fear was there. ]
Yona, can you hear me?! Kija - get my bag out from under me.
[ He's unfortunately wrapped up in it right now with Yona leaning on him like this. He wants to make sure she has no major wounds before they go moving here, and he might even be able to put together a rancid smell that will wake her up. ]
no subject
[Kija is right behind him, reaching out to catch at her shoulders, her cloak, anything. Anything to break her fall--!
[And then her fall is arrested, and now all three of them are twined together almost as tightly as the vines had done, an awkward knot of bodies and limbs and the Princess's hair brushing ticklishly against his neck. An undecorous and undignified position, this - the two of them falling all over themselves to try and keep the Princess on her feet, or close to it. Her weight, of course, is not an issue for Hakuryuu, though Yoon buckles beneath it - and do they not have this all backward?
[Yes, some sort of division of labor would make a lot more sense - and some tasks Kija, unlike Yoon, was very much designed for.]
I have her, Yoon. Please, find what you need!
no subject
K-kija? Yoon? What... Why is it so cold?
[ She's never felt this drained or weak before... ]
no subject
I'm sorry Yona, we're here now.
[ He's glad to see mostly cuts and bruises, nothing too serious. ]
No broken bones or deep cuts, Kija. I think she's going to be okay.
[ Then he takes the bag from Kija and gestures to his back, a little dramatically as he tries to get Yona's attention to focus there. ]
See if you can hold onto his shoulders so he can carry you out of here. I'll watch behind us as you run, Kija.
