38 - Power Palette Swap

What: Power Palette Swap Event!
When: April 15th - April 18th 2017 (March 1st - March 8th 2019)
Where: Throughout the Far Shore and Near Shore
Summary: A couple of intrepid magical investigators unknowingly trigger some mishaps among the New Gods and Shinki.



For two weeks, the Ama investigators have been combing the compound where Cultists were dealt a heavy blow by the New Gods and Shinki. Among them, two in particular had been looking to move the Crystal that the cultists had in their basement, the stand that it sat on, and the dolls nearby. Combined with Waver's analysis, Judar succeeds in using his magic to transport the Crystal out of the basement.

As they manage that, a ripple effect washes over the New Gods and Shinki. There is a slight sense of Vertigo for some, a stronger wave for others, and then things start to change...



As It Happens: April 15

Everyone was minding their own business. Perhaps they were on the Near Shore helping complete a prayer, or they were in the Far Shore attending to various godly duties. Regardless of where everyone was, it's around noon when some things start to change. A mild sense of vertigo happens to those who start to experience physical body changes, while a stronger wave seems to wash over the God or Shinki's skin if their powers are changing, or perhaps even a sudden stop-in-your-tracks deadening of feeling if being depowered entirely.

April 16

Later in the afternoon, through no extra effort of the Crystal-movers, a loud noise like a subwoofer kicking into effect issues from within the Crystal, knocking anyone away who was near it by several feet. The one-shot noise reverberates in the ears of all New Gods and Shinki, triggering another change for some. At the Crystal, the black color that appeared when the former Goddess entered the Crystal fills more of it.

April 17

Closer to 7pm, once more, the noise issues forth from the Crystal, louder and knocking people back several yards this time. The Crystal fills with black and grey. Some might swear they can see a face of the white-grey against all of the black, resembling an Inkblot / Rorschach test style picture.

Aftermath: April 18

Around 10am, the black coils from within the Crystal settle down into more of whispy smoke, much harder to see in it. There's a slight tug in the direction of the Crystal regardless of where New Gods and Shinki stand, and with that pull, the change effects go away and all are returned to as they were.

"No, you", dramatic pause? [One eyebrow goes up. Come on, Suzaku, finish the thought!]

[He blushes slightly from being the sudden focus of both of them at once but he tried to think, tried to focus on the source of the strangeness.] It's hard to explain. I feel more...

[More something. More powerful? A strange feeling, not exactly stronger, just different. Like he was all of a sudden more than he had been before.]

More unable to finish thoughts? Well, I've clearly gained that power in exchange for feeling weird in a distinctly unpleasant way. [Not that he looks troubled or pained, but something definitely feels wrong inside him.]

[His shinki are certainly unsettled. He can feel that for certain. However, he has no idea what might be amiss.]

Whatever it is, I don't seem to be affected. Maybe something you ate?

[Since the two of them seem to do a lot more of that than he does.]

Perhaps sir. [Saber will feel that creeping guilt again. He hoped he had not managed to give Edge some sort of food poisoning. Though...]

Did you not hear that noise before?

It's not something I ate! Bad food doesn't send me flying backwards into a wall! [Guess which shinki you're getting very familiar mild irritation and impatience from, Saber. Come on, guess.]

Oh, was there an explosion? I thought I might have heard something, but I was watching a movie...

[This is too interesting to just hang out in the hall for, so he actually makes the effort to come all the way into the room.]

It doesn't look like there was any damage, though...besides to the two of you, of course. Well, I suppose we'll just have to keep an eye on it!

[Still not too worried. The most worrying thing is how bad Suzaku seems to feel about it. Edge seems to be taking it as well as he takes anything. As soon as Saber is around to be a distraction, everything seems to get better and worse simultaneously.]

I have no idea how these powers work!

Perhaps. [A distant explosion perhaps? There definitely was no damage inside here. But perhaps the rest of the temple? Outside?

It wasn't unreasonable, after all strange things happened all the time.] We should check, if there's been an explosion somewhere people will need help.

[He starts towards the door, perhaps a little faster than usual, Suzaku is not exactly slow though so perhaps it is not that obvious. What is more noticeable though is the puff of smoke he leaves in his wake, hiding his exit from the room.]

Ninja magic!

Uh -- Suzaku, are you on fire? [That seems to be a legitimate concern, given what just happened. Edge hurries after him, at least not physically impaired by whatever just occurred.]

There does seem to be some smoke...

[Saber waves his hand around, trying to clear the air.]

It smells a bit more like smoke bomb smoke, though. Did someone throw one?

[Not something one would expect inside the temple, but Edge is here, so...]

Edge? [It does seem an Edge trick more than anything else, but there's no reason to throw a smoke bomb. Suzaku doesn't feel on fire. He looked around through the smoke, he didn't think there was anyone else around. Why would there be anyone else?

He readies himself, a subtle changing of posture, ready in case of danger.]

I don't use 'smoke bombs'! [The idea is downright offensive, though he knows the two of them are just idiots and don't know any better.] I use ninjutsu! Concealment for the purpose of escape is a technique, not a -- gimmick!

So you use magecraft to create smoke bombs?

[Because that's how he's understanding that.]

Sorry Edge. [He hadn't meant to insult him. He was also interested in how Edge did things. But if Edge had not created the smoke then... Who did?]

No! I use ninjutsu to create smoke! There's no bombs involved, and ninjutsu may have some similarities to black magic but it isn't the same!

[You two! Argh!]

Look, it's like -- [He starts to make a gesture with his hands, then stops. Starts again, then stops again.]

...Uh. I think I know why I feel like I'm missing something.

Hm? is it not working? Is there something amiss with your magic circuits?

[Saber apparently refuses to accept that there might be places that don't function under the same rules that he's used to. Not that this should really come as a surprise for anyone.]

[Magical circuits? Suzaku is even more confused now except... He thinks he knows what Edge is talking about.

He can't explain it, but he raises his hand.] Like this?

[And he channels the ninjutsu, causing smoke to billow up around them once more.

How... He had no idea how that was possible or how he had just done that...]

...It's like this very temple has decided I'm having too much luck being the sane and well-adjusted one, and has decided to tip the balance further away from me...

[Between Saber's weird talk and Suzaku's sudden use of ninjutsu, Edge doesn't even know where to begin.]

They do say that the universe in general moves towards chaos.

["They" being various programs on the science channel.]

Does this mean Suzaku has stolen your abilities? Or have you swapped, perhaps?

[If so, he feels sort of left out. Unless they've all swapped and now Edge can fire highly destructive beams of light from anything he feels like.]

I don't think I have anything to give in a swap. [As far as he knows he has no abilities, at least nothing has made itself known to him in the five months he has been in the heavens.

He had stolen Edge's abilities? How was such a thing even possible?]

I'm not overthinking things way too much, so safe to say this was a one-way trade. [Don't give him destructive light powers!]

[...although Minako has those, maybe she'd find it hot. Okay, give him a little.]

That seems terribly unfair.

[He takes about a nanosecond to think it over before he has a terrible promising idea.]

Perhaps if we recreated the circumstances, we could cause it to happen again?

[Someone just wants to make smoke bombs.]

Recreate them, sir? I'm not sure it's anything we did. [They had just been sparing, they have trained together every day practically since becoming Saber's shinki and quite a few times before then as well. He's not sure that's what has caused it...]

I'm sure it wasn't. [Edge self-consciously dusts himself off, never mind that he doesn't need it.] I WOULD like it fixed, though.

Hmmmm...

[He's doing that thing where he makes the thinking noise but isn't actually thinking again. It's obvious.]

The prudent thing to do, I suppose, would be to wait it out, but that isn't guaranteed to work. I'm sure I could think of quite a few other solutions. The one that immediately comes to mind is running at each other at a great speed and colliding.

[Is he getting his ideas from cartoons? Probably.]
